DESCRIPTION
Subscriber is a utility to keep track of your favorite web pages and inform you of changes.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.2b2:
  • [b2] Fixed Esellerate in-application registration system for Leopard compatibility.
  • [New] The user can now limit the number of web pages that Subscriber is allowed to check simultaneously. (This is mainly for the benefit of users using slow internet connections.)
  • [Fix] Fixed a bug that sometimes caused Subscriber to crash when rendering a web page.
  • [Fix] Rendered-web-page panel in criterion dialog now works.
  • [New] Show Matches option in criterion dialog is now optional in the rendered-web-page panel.
  • [Fix] Fixed bug that made it reject some valid URLs when importing a URL from a file.
  • [Chg] Import URLs From File option has a new dialog with more options.
  • [Fix] Fixed bug where Subscriber could crash when a link was accessed while displaying an XML channel.
  • [Fix] Subscriber no longer mis-identifies XHTML web pages as XML feeds.
  • [New] Subscriber now supports Keychain access to certain password-protected web pages: those that the default browser can access using information in the Keychain without the user having to click a 'Log In' button. Previously Subscriber was only able to access pages that did this using information in cookies.
  • [Fix] Fixed bug where Subscriber displayed HTML character codes in titles, instead of the Unicode characters.
  • [Fix] Subscriber now suppresses extraneous spaces in page titles, as browsers do.
  • [Fix] Fixed cosmetic glitch in display of selected cells.
  • [Fix] Fixed cosmetic glitch in display of buttons when running under Leopard.
  • [Fix] Highlighted subscriptions are now displayed in the system highlight colour again.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.3 or later (works with 10.2 but has minor glitches).

JILLEISCHEN  I find this app very useful with many options.

However it constantly takes 15-17% of CPU.

Why so much when it's not checking Webpages?

It takes about 50% when checking.

    Thats way too much.

I know my iBook G3 800 with OSX 10.4.6 is old but other apps don't take that much CPU.

    So why?

JOBBY  It would be useful if Subscriber supported Growl as a notification method.

Supporting standard keystrokes like Cmd-Left in the text entry field would be nice, too :)

More worryingly, what is amber.x-dns.com? Subscriber tries to connect to this at startup - probably just a version check (but there's no option to disable this, and there should be). If you deny connections to this address, email notifications don't work. In fact, Subscriber doesn't even try to connect to my mail server. Is it trying to send email via x-dns.com, and if so: why, and what guarantee do we have that our email addresses aren't being harvested? It doesn't inspire confidence :(

GREGORY  I use this daily. I have found it to be accurate, very reliable, and trouble free.

ANONYMOUS  Saw this application I thought I'd give it a try. However, the app tends to crash when I go to a internal ASP page repeatedly.

    ***½.

OHWELL  ok new review, due to the newer version... it works well, if a little less than intuitive to use in some aspects such as setting the time interval... but not a bad app at all and does work well once you get the hang of it.

OHWELL  The time interval needs to be adjustable, currently there is only one time interval which only allows for checking every hour...

DAVID DEUTSCH  We think we've reproduced the problem: it now appears to affect only URLs Pasted into Subscriber from the Clipboard - drag and drop from the address bar of a browser works correctly on our systems.

We'd be grateful if you could contact us at support@charcoaldesign.co.uk so that we can make sure we're seeing the same problem you are.

OHWELL  yes, that is the issue: copy and paste does not work but drag 'n drop does... something of a shortcoming there.

and it is, to my mind, necessary to have an option so that the user can set the time interval to, say, check a site every minute. sounds like overkill, checking a site every minute? well, no, that is what i need.

    thanks!
