JAMESB Well after using the last Free version of MTR for awhile, I decided I'd like to acquire the current most recent version. But alas, after spending 1/2 hour going around in circles, registering on forums I did not really want to, and then being forwarded to another forum which also required signing up for, and still no closer to getting the application, I just ran out of steam. I cannot believe anyone could make it so difficult to accept my money, but so be it, I suppose I'll just have to hand my cash over to one of the other DVD ripping applications, they'll probably satisfy my modest needs. NEGRITUDE It's hard to be a rational MacTheRipper supporter, because while the developer is brilliant and the program is outstanding, the atmosphere that surrounds it could be described as one of paranoia and sycophantic tendencies. Being able to acknowledge both sides of that reality is something that few people have been able to do. In any event, I've been an MTR user for a long time, from the free 2.0 version, to the donationware 3.0 version, to the now almost underground 4.0 version. In all that time MTR hasn't let me down. I still use mostly version 3 for my everyday needs, only pulling out version 4 when I run into a particularly difficult disc. That's mostly because at this point in time, version 3's interface is a lot snappier and less processor intensive, but hopefully the developer will soon abandon his affair with garish animated graphics and get back to basics. I know that neither the developer, the people helping him, or the folks running the discussion forums make it easy for those who aren't as adept at following directions to the letter. They're anal-retentive and touchy like that. You either figure it out or you don't. This is no longer a general market application, they really intend for it to be only for a small elite. It's an attitude that we're generally not as used to on the Mac platform, and seems more suited to the Linux or open source community. I don't know what to say. I'll continue to use it, as it serves my needs well, but I can definitely understand and empathize with those who have given up and looked for solutions elsehwhere. (Version 2.6.6)

R33C3 Won't decrypt recent releases. The decryption system on it, is far out of date. Good for movies before and a little after. If your ripping your collection to your computer try MDRP instead or Ripit, both great programs. (Version 2.6.6)

CHRIS HABIG MacThe Ripper works great, but why is it still PPC only? Come on guys, at least ship a universal binary! (Version 2.6.6)

JAMES WOODS I use version 3, and it's great at what it does. It's a fairly robust and easy to use ripper. Having said that....getting version 4 is such a PITA and the author is slow in replying to MTR 4 (website) request that I have given up. If you are going to ask people to PAY for it (in his words....gift) then he needs to be responsive. No wonder people pirate this software - He makes it to damn hard to get it legally. I won't steal it....I'll just continue to use the version I have until it's not longer feasible. There are other rippers out there, just as good, and pretty much the same price as the suggested "gift". To call the author arrogant would be an understatement. My advice - use a comparable product from a company (or individual) that is responsive to the customers. (Version 2.6.6)

XENOPHILE Given the purpose of this software, it seems entirely appropriate to pirate it. (Version 2.6.6)

KODSTER MTR 2.6.6 was updated years ago to version 3.0, but it was not posted to this site, or any other software update site. So, any comments about a software version which is at least 3 years old, is like flogging Windows 2000. That said, MTR 3.x has been a very solid program with updates provided at frequent intervals (again you have to go find it at their site). The support they provide is very good, any complaints about not receiving your information from them is usually an indication that you did not follow the instructions provided on their site. It is a great program, worth considering for ripping, that said, all rippers (in my experience) are pretty able at getting the info to your hard drive, but as the studios continue to muck up the DVD's with erroneous data often these files do not compress well. So, owning a copy of DVD2one is a good adjunct program, to date it irons out any bad sectors etc and make the whole process successful. (Version 2.6.6)

CERNIUK I use MacTheRipper to pull my DVD's into my system. So far it has been infallible. I buy and rip my DVDs to my media system: MacMini on a 37" HDTV wirelessly serving to two AppleTV's on Sony 55 HDTVs. MTR has saved me an enormous amount of money in replacing DVDs that my children have damaged or lost. I do have the donate-ware version 3.0 r14 What this software needs is the ability to automate the ripping workflow like RipIt or iTunes where the media is inserted and it just goes. What would be ideal is the ability to AppleScript MTR so a real workflow could be created to Rip with MTR into a pile and trigger HandBrake to queue to compression. (Version 2.6.6)

THEMTB I "donated" to get the new MTR update and GeezerButt never sent. This version sucks. Seriously people, there are a lot better options. They are updated frequently, have real support and are easier to use. (Version 2.6.6)

BDKENNEDY1 You would be better off finding other software such as RipIt or Fairmount to rip DVD's as MacTheRipper hasn't been updated in 5 years. They had a 3.0 version that has been in beta for several years but they stopped developing that too. That's because the developer is an arrogant a-hole that while the software is free, he wouldn't give you an update unless you donated money and then you had to wait for him to email it to you, which for some people was never.
