THECAUSE MacTheRipper claims to be 'free' but to get the full and best mactheripper 3.0 you need to donate. So shouldn't 2.6.6 be called a demo? Additionally, the latest donationware version on the 3.0 version 'phones home' every time you use it. So it is very possible that personal information of yours *may* be broadcast across the internet, which could also identify you as an MacTheRipper user. Doesn't it seem ironic that the developer of an app used to help circumvent movie protections is implementing an anti-piracy scheme for his own-software? Where did this project go wrong? What ever happened to open source being open source? (MTR is dependent upon the open-sourced GPL libdvdread and libdvdcss libraries.) Great software core, terrible chains tied to it and bad exploitation of open source resources. (Version 2.6.6)

MCD3 First off, this app has taken FOREVER to get to 3 (14m)beta A little too long- I donated what 2-3 years ago-and its still not finished, it seems If you donated, you were supposedly going to be notified about new betas to DL and then get the final FREE. Every so often I would notice 2-3 betas later of a new one No notification. Would inform of my email address which supposedly When 3 (13r) came out I had to go through an elaborate FBI background check and follow a too complex set of exact instructions to prove I had donated- So they send me the app only-no license I wrote 3 times and each time the app ONLY arrived. FINALLY I got the license-which you put into /user/library/prefs or MTR wont work I wrote for what appears to be the final beta-no final release it seems, and have not heard back; I finally got it off MSJ with license Its telling that one time the developer defended himself from charges that he was building the app as slowly as possible in hopes of getting as many donations as possible If Blu Ray ever takes off-which I doubt-different claims of 10% to 75% of the market has switched to BR- I think 10-15% is more accurate-esp in these times-then MTR will become obsolete Ive read many others who have complained It does not feel finished, crashes and seems defeated by the very things it was built to avoid-studio tricks to trip up ripping (Version 2.6.6)

ST00P!D M0NK3Y That about sums it up right there. I went the MSJ root as well to avoid the nightmarish stories I've read about. And even after getting it from there, the app is extremely buggy and doesn't work on most new DVDs. The developer is sucking money from the hopes of faithful MTR fans and each new beta release seems to be further and further apart. I have no clue when a final stable release will come into fruition, but MTR is a shadow of what it used to be and the development is asinine. (Version 2.6.6)

MARK EVERITT I'm confused. The libraries mentioned below are GNU GPL. Does that not require that the source for MacTheRipper is freely available? If this is the case then we need to put on some serious pressure to make this source available for download because this project is an abuse of those libraries. (Version 2.6.6)

SHOCK J I hope you're not trying to suggest that because someone uses open source code in their project that their ENTIRE project, including the code that THEY WROTE, must now be open source? You've got to be kidding. Apple uses TONS of open source code in Mac OS X (i.e. Darwin) and they certainly don't give their OS away for free or submit every piece of code they write into the open source community. Just because you happen to use some open source code in a project, doesn't mean that the code YOU wrote the utilizes it isn't still proprietary and doesn't belong to you. (Version 2.6.6)
| Nov 1 2008 |
MARK EVERITT Wow. Ease up on the aggro there! You've made a fair point and cleared up my question. Still, it's not exactly in the spirit is it? As far as I know the major contributor to Darwin is Apple (they host the source code on their servers) to separate the open source chunk from their proprietary chunk, so I'd counter what you're saying. They are giving the OS away for free. Darwin is the OS, and Mac OS is Darwin plus some sugar. That is getting a bit pedantic though. (Version 2.6.6)

RIPIT Actually, the open source projects being used are licensed under the GPL (v2) -- and that version of the GPL explicitly states that, "You must cause any work that you distribute or publish, that in whole or in part contains or is derived from the Program or any part thereof, to be licensed as a whole at no charge to all third parties under the terms of this License." ( read more at: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.html ) In short, if you use *any* GPL'd code into your app, your entire app falls under the terms of the GPL. This is exactly why the GPL is described as a "viral" license. MacTheRipper is violating the spirit as well as the legal terms of the license, plain and simple. In contrast, Apple uses "BSD" licensed open source code, which contains no such viral provision, and "LGPL" code, which is basically the GPL but without the viral provisions for users of libraries and such. (Version 2.6.6)

MARK EVERITT Thanks for clearing that up. My outrage is justified then! (Version 2.6.6)

CREEPSTER Why is this still listed as the weekly popular on MacUpdates home page? There hasn't been any new development for quite a while and RipIt is always being updated. MTR 2.6.6 is old stuff and barely works with any new disks out there. (Version 2.6.6)

MECHAMANIA Because people are downloading it more than other apps this week. (Version 2.6.6)

CREEPSTER I guess Mechamania didn't realize that the question I posed was Rhetorical. It did not require a response. It was more of a statement alluding to the fact that MTR 2.6.6 is old and not being updated. Sorry for the confusion. (Version 2.6.6)

CLIQUE OF ONE MacTheRipper (MTR) 2.6.6 is the last "free" or trial version. MTR is currently donationware (paid application) and has been updated to MTR 3.0.14m, that I'm aware of. (Version 2.6.6)
| May 30 2009 |
CREEPSTER MTR 3 hasn't been updated in almost a year and a half. RipIt is being updated constantly. It's a no-brainer. So, the question is this. If 3.0, the paid version, hasn't been updated in a while, how good is 2.6.6 going to work when it's not being updated at all. RipIt is less than $20. Why bother jumping through the MTR hoops to make a "donation"? (Version 2.6.6)
| Jun 8 2009 |
MECHAMANIA I hadn't realized it was rhetorical. I just thought it was a stupid question. Nothing personal. The vagaries of plain text posts... and you get a lot of stupid questions around these parts. I always say, "there are no stupid questions," but what I really mean is that I'll try to answer any question that isn't in some way out-of-line, no natter how banal. Yet, I'm here grabbing another copy of MTR. Still has it's uses for my older discs that I wanna preserve using my newer computer. I'll have to check out that RipIt deal. Thanks, and sorry for the confusion. (Version 2.6.6)

YOKELLY This used to be good until I upgrade to Leopard and bought a new MacBook Pro. I made a second donation for the upgrade (required) and tried to contact the developer 3 or 4 times over a 4 to 6 month period to troubleshoot the non-working update. I got NO answer. Completely non-responsive. That second donation was exactly that - it would have been better off going to a worthwhile charity. (Version 2.6.6)

BDKENNEDY1 I've lived long enough to see it all. The next version of MacTheRipper will need to be activated over the internet. MacTheRipper was the defacto standard for ripping DVD's on your Mac. Now they have implemented a license protection scheme for their software that phone's home when you connect to the internet. That's right folks. The developers are so full of themselves that they are protecting their own software that pirates DVD's. They ask you to donate money to support them even though they haven't had an official release in almost 2 years. Instead, donate your money to DVD2OneX. At least they come out with regular updates. XYPHER MTR has been updated regularly and is at version 3.R14j. Have to agree about the donation though. At the asking price it should at least support HD/Blu-Ray. (Version 2.6.6)

MACCENTRIC When you go to www.mactheripper.com, only 2.6.6 is available for download. If you want v3, you have to go to the forums, which require registration just to view them. There's just so many hoops I'll hop through before I go somewhere else for my software needs, and apparently this is too many as I've gone to dvd2one. (Version 2.6.6)

GARYD Just so people don't misunderstand what DVD2One does, DVD2One is a compressor, rather than a true ripper. It does a fine job on discs without copy protection and on discs which have already been ripped to remove or bypass such protection. It does not rip copy protected discs, nor does it claim to do so anywhere on its web site. It is certainly not an alternative to a program like MacTheRipper. (Version 2.6.6)

MACVAULT MTR was OK a while back, but I switched to RipIt about 4 months ago. Seems to have better support (ie: if a certain disc won't rip, they issue a patch fairly quickly to fix it) and just seems much more reliable and faster than MTR. It's dead simple too. Seems like MTR's development has stalled or stopped. For those not happy with it, I'd recommend checking out RipIt instead. Not affiliated in any way, just a happy user. (Version 2.6.6)

MITSIRHC When you use RipIt what program do you use for compression? (Version 2.6.6)
| Mar 20 2009 |
MACVAULT @ MITSIRHC I use Handbrake, of course! It's free and does a bang up job every time. Has a lot of presets too to make it very easy to choose depending on where/how the video is going to be used. Have fun! (Version 2.6.6)

THEROCKSTER26 Dunno about this one. Used it a couple of times after what seemed like the Trials of Hercules to find the most up to date version. Whilst it was good (selecting certain chapters for example)I found it a tad buggy and requires updates to circumvent newer copy protection. If you are doing a straight up DVD back up I would recommend using Fairmount. Fairmount and recodes a DVD to a Video TS folder with out the copy protection easily with no fuss. Fairmount is free and all you need is VLC installed. (Version 2.6.6)

ST00P!D M0NK3Y There's a reason that programs need to be updated... because new encryption algorithms are being produced all the time on new DVDs. Fairmount is great... I use it... but it doesn't work all the time... especially with newer releases. When neither Fairmount or MactheRipper works, I boot up Parallels in Windows and copy the disc with an updated version of AnyDVD... which is by far the best decryptor I've come across on Windows or Mac. They update frequently and whenever a new algorithm is out, they're on top of it. I wish they'd make AnyDVD for Mac. =\ (Version 2.6.6)
