EDITOR NOTES
Please note that FrontBase requires a valid license string to run in the non-expiring mode. If FrontBase is used without a license string, databases will become inaccessible, but not destroyed, two months after they were created. Visit the FrontBase store to generate a free E-Starter license or purchase one of our commercial licenses with comprehensive features.
DESCRIPTION
FrontBase is a high performance, scalable, SQL 92 compliant relational database server created in the internet age for universal deployment.

FrontBase was created to fill the need for a robust and scalable relational database server that was Internet enabled, had no downtime, and required zero administration. FrontBase's speed, wide range of features, and flexible structure can give you the competitive edge. FrontBase is not only incredibly fast, but is also a very scalable relational database server. Our customers use FrontBase to create everything from small personal databases to some of the largest enterprise level databases in the world - yet without any need for expensive database administration staff. In business since 1996, FrontBase not only creates tools, but also mission critical applications, such as the Command and Control Center for the Copenhagen Police, a 24/7 emergency response system. With a dedicated Support division, and separate divisions for Tools, Core Development, and Professional Services, FrontBase is ready to help you achieve your goals with three offices around the world.

The basic package is called E-Starter, which contains a free non-expiring license. The E-Starter package is a fully networked version including 3 technical support instances. There is no limit to the number of concurrent connections or the number of users. To obtain an E-Starter license consult our Web site, www.frontbase.com.

ANONYMOUS  I looked into this a couple of years ago (planning a migration from a FileMaker database) and it seemed pretty good at the time, but I think they've been left behind by MySQL (which I settled on) and others. It may be a good (or great) product but no critical mass!

DISAPPOINTED  Are these guys really a company or a bunch of hackers? No compatibility between versions 3 and 4. I guess it doesn't matter if there's no installed base. Glad I didn't waste too much time with the "prototype version."

Their website (frontbase.com) says the latest version is 3.6.2 but here we are talking about 4.1.1. What's up with that?

JASON  There is an installed base and a rather impressive one. Apple uses FrontBase in many of its user-driven forums as well as other internal functions. Many other corporations use it, too.

FrontBase is very, very cool and offers some security options not found in other sql-based database engines. It has a tool to help convert from other db structures inclusing FileMakerPro and a pretty good support system if you need it. We have been looking at replacing MySQL with a few FB servers, but have not had the budget yet to do so, but it is the plan.
