NCIANCA  $80 bucks to basically change the file extension and fix time code breaks and still requires the MPEG-2 codec?

A .VOB file on a DVD is nothing more then an MPEG-2 file.

Assuming you have the Apple Quicktime MPEG-2 codec ($30 or included with Final Cut) all you have to do is copy the VOB file(s) to your drive, rename the file's extension to .MPG or .m2v and use MPEG Streamclip (free) to fix the timecode breaks and optionally convert it to any other format such as DV or H.264 or whatever.

MPEG Streamclip can also be used to split the video using in/out points so that you do not need to post process the entire file.

Note that this does not work with VOB files that are encrypted with CSS but works perfectly with any CSS free DVD.

GENESIS2010  Have been using DVDxDV for two years now, version 1.09 on a pair of MacG5s; my experience is that if you have a DVD that is about 3GB full or less, it works fine. The app takes a long time to load the DVD. But if you have a 4GB, the problems abound! Additionally, if you have made your DVD from a videotape with some control track that is not continuous, the app fails on a number of fronts. For the past couple of days I've been trying to make a .mov file from one of four tracks on a DVD that I made from a VHS tape. The app does not recognize much of the track; just the last 20%. I've given up on DVDxDV! If only I could recover my lost time in past couple days!

**Also, many of the glowing reviews in here seem suspiciously bogus and shallow! Caveat Emptor!

GCRAIGA  This program has a buggy interface and problems when trying to do batch conversions.

I discovered MPEG Streamclip 1.7 which has a better interface, it's less buggy and most importantly FREE.

Tip - Don't use the DV setting built into the program because the audio does not import into final cut without rendering. Instead, use the Quicktime export and enter the QT settings for DV manually.

MACUS   Some time ago I purchased an $80 license for this program. No information on upgrades. The upgrades listed on MacUpdate or VersionTracker link only to demo versions of the program which cannot be registered. I have over the last 4 weeks sent six emails to the developers asking for info on obtaining the intermediate upgrades to which I should be entitled. Not a single response. What an incredible waste of money.

HYPERLINK  I've used DVDxDV and DVDxDV Pro for years and have co-workers who use it heavily, daily. I agree that MPEG Streamclip does most of the same things and more. One thing that Streamclip doesn't do is handle DVD's from DVD's from DVD Recorders well. There is a lengthy process where you have to "Fix Timecode Breaks". DVDxDV or the Pro version is much more efficient to work with if your DVD's come from stand-alone DVD Recorders. My main gripe is that DVDxDV and the pro version leave jaggies in areas of high color saturation and movement. Seems like some kind of interlacing artifact. MPEG Streamclip seems to handle the same footage with a more pleasing effect to me.

SHOTGUNWEDDINGS  Excellent tool of it's kind for video conversion with some very useful options.

For those that scoff at the price, there is a lighter version which is cheaper, but you get what you pay for then, less options & control!

Works for me with 10.4.6 and various outputs to QuickTime flavours.
