DESCRIPTION
Unison is a carefully-crafted, genuinely revolutionary Mac OS X Usenet newsreader. It offers all the expected newsreader functionality: easy-to-navigate threaded discussions, the ability to ignore annoying posters, multiple signature management, and easy, Mail-like posting with spell checking and all the trimmings.

But it also goes much, much further than any other Usenet client on earth, starting with a unique four-view interface that lets you view and work with Usenet group content in four distinct styles: messages, files, images, or music. It lets you preview MP3 files directly off a Usenet server, view images in an elegant iPhoto-like thumbnail view, prioritize transfers with a flexible downloads manager, find favorites quickly with a categorized column-view interface, smartly group files into meta-groups (like songs into albums), show download status beautifully in the dock, and much more.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.0:
  • Redesigned interface
  • Unified the browsing experience with an all-in-one view
  • Added a beautiful new group directory
  • Improved message reading with a thread view and thread lines
  • Built-in a binary search browser
  • Added automatic UnPAR/UnRAR/skipping of unneeded recovery sets, and much much more.
  • Made some significant changes to Unison Access
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.5 or later.

HERMIE  Because the developer is friendly and responsive I paid for the upgrade, but I'll hold back on using Unison 2 until at least I can mark files Read/Unread and I can customize font size etc in the file listings window. A return of the available header count next to the group name wouldn't hurt much either.

No comments on the new bells & whitles because I'm not using them anyway. MacPARdeLuxe and SimplyRAR work fine for me. But then, if the developers make this version usable for me by changing the above I might give them a try.

GCOGHILL  FYI, there is a UI glitch if you drag-resize the window using a Wacom stylus (at least an Intuos4). I have been in touch with the developers and they are aware of it, but no indication of when it will be fixed.

QPR214  I've now spent the best part of an afternoon trying version 2.0 out. My verdict: Stick with 1.8x. Regardless of the claim that it was 'rebuilt from the ground up', perhaps they should have stuck with what worked. My main gripes are:

* ALL caches wiped without question, no attempt to migrate. If you have a large library of headers, they will be wiped.

* Favorites aren't imported. All you'll see are NULL folders.

* You can't mark files as read, only messages. No matter what you do, you are working with all the headers in a particular group. This means that if you have a group with 7.5 million headers (like I have), they are parsed in any and all searches. You cannot just work with unread stuff here.

* You cannot focus on messages in one group or files in another. The selection you make at the bottom of the screen is global, and you have to remember to switch back and forth depending on whether it's a file or message group.

* If you have many headers, like me, it's dog slooooow. Headbangingly, beach-balling slow.

So, should you buy it? Definitely not. It looks like the developers really think that UI stuff is everything, while back-end effectiveness is a byproduct.

I'm disappointed in Panic--especially given the time it took to get an update. Mac users effectively don't have a good newsreader anymore.

GCOGHILL  yeah the inability to mark files as read seems a huge oversight. I have the same issues with imported groups being null folders.

ETNIER  What a damn shame. I suspected something was funny when I went to the Unison website: I've never seen less concrete information released about a major version upgrade.

After all these years, you'd think they'd get things better than this.

CASTLE  Really not getting the whole "cannot mark files as read" thing. I'm doing it right now. "Mark as read" marks them as read, "Hide read messages" hides them. "Show read messages" shows them again. Where does the problem lie?

CASTLE  Okay, misread and didn't see you say "only messages". Yeah, that is pretty stupid. Stange oversight.

DETLEVSKI  Lost all my favourites as stated earlier, every file shows up twice on my Giganews account.

Horrible update ...

Still not possible to mark a whole group as marked.

Maybe they needed the money so badly, there was no time tp properly test ...

Still in love with Thoth..

HERMIE  Unison 2 has been tested for a looong time. I told the developer that a lot of groups from 1.8 are not imported properly in version 2, but nothing seems to have been done about it.

I also told the developer umpteen times that it is not possible to mark files Read or Unread (Hide or Show Marked or whatever one wants to call it) which means decent file management is now sheer impossible compared with 1.8. Yes, you can of course delete files, but if you need something from earlier on afterall it means reloading the whole header shebang again. And that can mean a million or so of headers. Of course one can chose not to delete anything, but then try to find something.

The answer to that one was that Unison 2 is a complete rewrite and that the developer's choice was a "latest download" separator or view, so the buttons stay inactive when in the binaries listing.

I'm sorry, but I don't want eye candy if that means essential power user functions are ditched. Staying with 1.8 which does give a limited possibility to manage files and has a much clearer interface. To me anyway...

PEHPSI.3  People knew this was the first update in like 2 years and that there were major changes...didn't y'all think that just maybe, v2 would overwrite all previous saved works?

DAN BUCHAN  "People knew this was the first update in like 2 years and that there were major changes...didn't y'all think that just maybe, v2 would overwrite all previous saved works?"

You're joking, right? This has to be a joke...

You're saying that we shouldn't be surprised if a new version of an application wipes out all of our saved preferences and other settings?

So I guess you'd be A-OK with a new version of a web browser that erases all of your bookmarks, right?

Until the folks at Panic get their heads screwed back on straight this update is going right where is belongs -- into the trash.

CASTLE  This is now probably the most elegant, well designed and useful app on my Mac. I waited and waited and waited and waited for an update and I'm not one little bit disappointed. Dave, thank you!

****.

PEHPSI.3  Gotta say I'm really diggin' v2.0.

A very clean and Mac-like app as usual from the Panic guys..

The fact that it now does everything from searching to unpacking, is awesome. Added an NZB site to the menu, went to said site, then found and clicked my NZB and bam! Downloaded, unpacked and trashed the waste for me.

UI is great and love the info for speed, time remaining, progress, etc.

It's obvious they've spent quite a bit of time gettin' v2 ready, it really shows once you start using it. It's been a long time between drinks and like others, hope it's here to stay.

Nice one.

LUBDUB  Thanks for updating after two years, however, all my favourite groups have gone...just left with an unnamed list of empty folder icons. I'll not be paying to update this app until there is a proper version which correctly loads all preferences from the 1.8 version. Needs bug fixes and less superfluous eyecandy. It's a newsreader not Delicious Library.

QPR214  To add insult to injury, ~/Library/Caches/Unison content is deleted (folders are there). So if you have millions of header messages gathered over the years they are gone, I mean black hole gone.

So, hopefully you have a time-machine/superduper/other backup and can restore, otherwise you are fcuked.

TEMPOTEUFEL  Incredible:

- Freezes, crashes, and even more crashes. (Snow Leopard 10.6.2, iMac i7) It's nearly impossible to use it more than 2 minutes!

- Message filter can't be selected -> not working

- Doesn't show the number of new headers in the favorite group list anymore.

- Doesn't have a own category for images anymore.

- Image preview is a pain in the a...

The best feature is that it does not use the old database. Downgrade to 1.8 is guaranteed.

SATYRICA  RE: UNISON 2.0

GREAT overhaul of their aging app. Clean UI and true to Panic's quality and style.

Tons of new features, notably:

• Search 3rd party index sites and dl direct from .nzb link in search results

• Post-processing of files (unrar, unzip, concat) after successful dl (including recovery)

• Streamlined dl/ul GUI: est. time remaining on dl/ul, selective pause... WOW NICE!

• Expand or collapse (consolodate) transfers window per grouping!

It's been a LONG time coming, and things were looking grim, but I am truly impressed!

Thanks especially to DAVE for doing this project solo!

Cheers!

CHAS_M  Just to add to my previous comment:

The previous version (1.8.1) was released almost exactly two years ago. The last major update was version 1.7 (everything since then has been bug fixes), and that came out in April of 2005.
