EDITOR NOTES
Mac OS 10.3 users should not install this update. More info.
DESCRIPTION
Bookdog is the complete bookmarks manager for your Mac.
Bookdog manages the bookmarks you have in
- Camino
- del.icio.us
- Firefox 1.5-2
- Firefox 3 (beta test)
- Google Bookmarks
- OmniWeb
- Opera
- Netscape
- Safari
- Shiira 2.0 or later
Managing bookmarks includes:
- Sorting to your specifications
- Keeping them sorted, by its built-in companion, Bookwatchdog
- Detecting duplicates, to your specifications
- Verifying bookmarks, fixing broken ones, advising on questionable ones
- Migrating bookmarks between browsers
- Migrates attributes such as descriptions, keywords
- Converts Tags to Hierarchy and back
- Powerful searching
- All capabilities extend to bookmarks on other networked Macs.
- Can also create or read standalone or "backup" bookmarks files.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 5.3.8:
- This update fixes issues for anyone using Bookwatchdog, Firefox users that have more than a hundred or so tags, and Google Bookmarks users.
- Fixed bug which could cause unnecessary sorting (and barking, if enabled) by Bookwatchdog.
- Improved efficiency in the "Comparing tags" phase during re-saving of Firefox 3 bookmarks. With thousands of bookmarks and thousands of tags, on a typical Core 2 Duo Mac, previous versions would request more memory than the system will give and need to be force quit. Now, the operation completes in a few seconds.
- Fixed a bug introduced in 5.3.5 which could cause the progress spinner to remain spinning and dirty dot in the window close box to remain dirty after successful save (upload) of Google Bookmarks.
- When user attempts a 'Save As' operation with Firefox 3 bookmarks, now displays a dialog explaining how this can be done, instead of failing silently.
REQUIREMENTS
- Mac OS X 10.4 or later
- To manage Firefox bookmarks, must be using Firefox 1.5 or later. Firefox 3 is recommended.
- To manage OmniWeb bookmarks, must be using OmniWeb 5.0 or later

LORIN RIVERS This is PRECISELY what I have been looking for. I've just scratched the surface, but it's fast and flawless so far. I've got my bookmarks synced between Safari, FF2 & 3 and Camino. It's also checking my bookmarks in the background as I type this. Something I've needed to do for a long time. I hate the icon, though. (Version 5.1.12)

F451 I have been using Bookdog since it was first released. Without a doubt one of the best little apps to have if you browse the web. Discreet, fast updates, well worth the money. I do not mind the icon as this application has so much substance, and I like the developer. (Version 5.1.15)

LOUNGE DELUXE I've been using BookDog for a few years now, and It proved helpful from day one. The developer provides for regular updates and he's very responsive when it comes to email support. Recommended! But I'd appreciate an GUI upgrade though, it looks horrible to me. (Version 5.1.44)

SJK Parts of the GUI still look unattractive to me in this BookMacster preview movie: http://sheepsystems.com/engineering/Preview0121.mov For example, those "customizing [1]", "Firefox [1]", etc. labels (whatever they're called) in the dark gray background of the Content tab in a Bookshelf at about 00:01:35 really beg to be redesigned. (Version 5.2)

JERRY KRINOCK Regarding the comment by SJK... I took the movie down a couple weeks ago because it was too outdated. BookMacster looks different now. In place of the movie there is the completed Help Book (documentation.) Oh, yes and the dark gray background has been removed from the Tag Cloud now. It looks much better. (Version 5.3.6)

SJK Thanks for the followup, Jerry. (Version 5.3.8)

RICHARD RATZAN bookdog is great!!!!!!! indispensable. it does so much more than alphabetize/sort (at levels one can control) browser bookmarks (it's pitiful that safari doesn't include such a basic feature when it comes to bookmakrs). i do not use most of its features, frankly, but like the fact they are there and at its reasonable price, it's worth it for just the sorting/validation/duplication identification features. developer was very responsive to an unusual request of mine (how to sort by date of creation/modification) with a workaround and upgrades - free - are almost weekly and painlessly installed and BBD relaunched. rich ratzan (Version 5.1.12)

STEVEN GOODHEART Wait a minute! Sheepsystem's Bookdog site is a "malicious web site?" You've got to be kidding me, right? This is one of the best, most reliable, and honest developers of Mac software around. This has got to be some mistake on Websense's part, or else this is post about it is malicious. It seems really irreponsible not to go to the developer with this "news" first before posting something like this here. I just went to the Websense site, and anybody can report a "malicious" site by just plugging in a link and saying why they think it is "malicious." No indication of how Websense verifies any such reports or if their findings can be verified. Maybe Websense is a legit site, but if they don't explain their methodology for determining that a site is considered "malicious," how can the info be trusted? By the way, I have no relationship to Sheepsystem except as a highly satisfied customer who has had nothing but a great experience with the software and with the developer when I've need to report a problem. TOM_BOVO I'm not saying they are malicious web site. WebSense the company is saying that. They make firewall software and censorship software, so one day I try to check the web site from where I work, and BINGO. The idiot censors at WebSense have blacklisted them. The owners need to contact WebSense and try to get themselves unlisted. (Version 5.3.8)

STEVEN GOODHEART Thank you for your gracious reply and for clarifying your intent. It's just the the wording was such that it was hard (for me) to discern what the implications were to your post. I apologize for responding so defensively when you were just trying to help. I did send an e-mail to the developer, who said he was a baffled as anyone what it was about, since Adsense doesn't explain how they come to their conclusions. The developer also said he checked his site and it's totally clean so far as he can determine, and had contacted them to find out what was up. (Version 5.3.8)

JERRY KRINOCK Thanks to Tom, and Steven for bringing this to our attention. Websense informed me today that the issue is resolved and that, as of today's daily broadcast, sheepsystems.com is no longer listed as a malicious site. Jerry Krinock (Version 5.3.8)

TOM_BOVO WebSense filtering software has this company on its blacklist and blocks all access to it. Reason: The Websense category "Malicious Web Sites" is filtered. URL: http://www.sheepsystems.com/products/bookdog/ (Version 5.3.8)

JAYCE I like most things about this application but not the fact that after I use it, Safari crashes if I try to drag a url into a bookmark folder. The only work-around I've found is to run Bookdog, quit Bookdog, go into Activity Monitor and kill the little piece of Bookdog that's still in touch with Safari, and then go into Safari's menu (once) for the Add Bookmark process. I hope someone finds an easier way to get the two to co-exist. (Version 5.3.6)

JERRY KRINOCK How about let's fix it instead of a workaround :) I've tried to reproduce this but it works fine for me, as shown in this short screencast. (Warning: Screencast has audio track.) http://sheepsystems.com/files/SafariNoCrash.mov Regarding the "little piece of Bookdog that's still in touch with Safari", I presume that Jayce is referring to Bookwatchdog. Although I didn't show that in the screencast, Bookwatchdog is indeed activated in the Preferences. I also did another test after Bookwatchdog sorted bookmarks and still no crash. We did have a crashing issue when Safari 4.0 beta was first released. Safari would crash if you were in the middle of editing a bookmark name when Bookwatchdog did its sorting. That was fixed a while ago. Jayce, if you or anyone else could tell me what to reproduce the crash, we'll see what we can do! Jerry Krinock (Version 5.3.6)

TOM46 Long ago, this used to be a great little app, simple to use and very functional. Now the gui is hopelessly confusing and for all practical purposes impossible to use. (Version 5.3.3)

XENOPHILE Jesus, that GUI is a disaster! Three rows of tabs? WTF is the developer thinking? (Version 5.3.6)
| Nov 3 2009 |
JERRY KRINOCK I believe that Xenophile is referring to the three rows of white-on-black tokens just below the title bar in the screenshot shown above. If you would pull down the split bar below them you would see seven more rows. But they are not tabs :) They are *tags*. Tags are used in Firefox and Delicious bookmarks. The whole thing up there is called a *tag cloud*, as described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tag_cloud except that we didn't like the idea of different-sized tags, so instead we put the number of occurrences in square brackets after the word. How many rows you have in the tag cloud depends on how many tags you've added to your bookmarks. If they are Safari bookmarks, it will be zero, since Safari does not support tags, and the tag cloud is not shown. (Version 5.3.6)
