DESCRIPTION
Xcode is Apple Computer's integrated development environment (IDE) for Mac OS X. The full Xcode package is free to ADC members and includes all the tools you need to create, debug, and optimize your own Universal applications, targeting both Intel and PowerPC platforms. At the heart of Xcode is a graphical workbench that tightly integrates a syntax-highlighting text editor, a robust build control system, a debugger, and the powerful GCC compiler capable of targeting both Intel and PowerPC regardless of host platform. Xcode is both easy to use, using assistants to create working projects in just minutes, and also powerful enough to build the largest Mac OS X applications. Xcode is bundled with Interface Builder, AppleScript Studio, Java development support, and WebObjects development tools, among many others.
WHAT'S NEW
Xcode 3.1.3 is an update release of the developer tools for Mac OS X. This release provides additional GCC and LLVM compiler options, general bug fixes, and must be installed on Leopard, Mac OS X 10.5.0 and higher. Xcode defaults to upgrading an existing Xcode installation, but may optionally be installed along side existing Xcode installations. See the accompanying release notes for detailed installation instructions, known issues, and security advisories.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.5. ADC Membership (to login for download), which is free at its basic level. Join here.

SHOTGUNWEDDINGS I had no serious issues with the last update 3.1.2, so I don't expect any from the 3.1.3 release. Thanks Apple for keep us up to date with all these great developer tools and examples. 5 stars from me all across the board again! (Version 3.1.3)

PERSON1229 Why are there things under "Other People Suggest" ? Nothing beats Xcode. (Version 3.1.3)

SHOTGUNWEDDINGS I'd guess the alternatives people have listed are from people that are on crack. None of the suggestions is even close to the developer tools included with xCode. LOL Downloading this newest version now. (Version 3.1.3)

HOFMAN It may also mean that some people have suggested Xcode from the page of the other apps. It seems that "other people suggest" can either mean that someone has suggested the other app from this page, or that they've suggested this app from the other apps page. Makes no sense to me, but that's the only way I can explain the strict symmetry between the number of 'suggestions' from one app to the other and the other way around. Just follow any of the links and compare for the suggestions on that page. Works for any review on MU. (Version 3.1.3)

ASMEURER Does anyone know how to change the default shebang line for python scripts? I installed 2.6, but Xcode still wants me to run 2.5. (Version 3.1)

BLEE Java Documentation takes for ever to install because of indexing. I am still indexing the documentation I've check the error logs and no errors have occurred but it's taking an incredibly long time and still going (Version 2.3)

SOOB It took a very long time on my machine (Ti G4 DVI) as well. It just finished after probably 4 hours of indexing (I was about to search for issues online when it completed) (Version 2.3)

ANONYMOUS XCode (we’re using 2.1 currently) is a usable but flawed IDE for Mac development. Its major shortcomings are: 1. No mouse-driven context sensitivity for variable display in the debugger. The debugger can’t show values of variables you pass the cursor over in your source text. This is really a must-have debugger feature that virtually every other professional debugger has had for years (Metrowerks, Visual Studio, etc.). 2. There are annoying delays when checking/clearing break points and intellisense pop-ups are slow – even on dual G5 workstations. 3. Text editor is slow (slight delays when hitting enter key, typing, etc). 4. Defining configuration sets (ie release vs debug) is overly complicated in how build settings are defined and managed. Apple fiddles with this part of XCode with every release and makes it more and more convoluted. 5. You frequently lose breakpoint markers after compile & run. 6. Debugger stepping is slow. 7. IDE documentation is scant and the HTML based on-line help system just plain sucks (slow, poorly written). We’ve used XCode for major commercial development and trust me it doesn’t “rock”. It is just barely above the quality that you would expect with free software. It’s less robust than Apple’s ancient MPW, and hardly compares to Microsoft’s Visual Studio especially its substandard debugger. (Version 2.2)

HOBIE2987 Xcode is awesome, i prefer it over codewarrior anyday. only problem is if you read from a .dat file or any other type you got to do it by path. they should make it that it will read from the file as long as it follows the same file path. they should make improvements on that but other than that it is awesome and meets my standards for all my future programming needs as a CIS major in college,. way to go apple, kick ass! SHINZA.COM I use Subversion to manage development of Shinza.com. I was very excited to hear about Xcode's imminent Subversion support, but after giving Xcode 1.5 a test drive I am decidedly underwhelmed. I have an existing Subversion server and yet see no way to check out code from the server via Xcode. The SCM documentation is weak and makes no mention about checking out code. If someone has figured out how to use Xcode to check out files from a Subversion server repository, edit them, and then commit them, please let the world know. Until then, I'm going back to BBEdit and SCPlugin. (Version 1.5)

ANONYMOUS Lots of nice new features in this release. Plus the editor is actually fast! SCM seems much improved (only used CVS as of yet) Problems: The toolbar in the editor window is gone. You have to switch to the project window to build now. Also, it takes 2-3 clicks on the project window's build button for it to actually build. (Version 1.5)

GENGHISCOHEN Is someone playing a joke on MacUpdate? XCode 1.2 has been out for more than 2 months now (release date 3-17-04). Any reviews/comments that are dated 5-25 must be taken as uninformed. (Version 1.2)

JKISH2 If it's been out for so long, why am I still stuck at Xcode 1.1? For some reason, it still hasn't shown up in my Software Update window nor do I really want to download all the segmented image files for the whole CD. Was there ever an update posted on ADC? If so, where can we find it? (Version 1.2)

YAZARIM I did not (and will not) write any comment or review, but probably *you* are badly informed. I saw this software update this morning, not one minute before, and since then I have spent my life downloading 21 files, each of about 30 MB. Could I have written a review *before* knowing that the update was available? Do you receive informations from angels? Really lucky... (Version 1.2)

PARTWAYTHERE The files on the ftp server are dated April 21st. I installed Xcode 1.0 from CD earlier this month, and Software Update alerted me to the 1.1 Update. To those having trouble downloading the segments, don't try to do more than one at a time. If you have connection problems, try another site. If you get a piece or few then can't get more, log out then back in. I believe the developer site generates new passwords every 15 minutes. I got the segments in about half an hour on a fairly fast connection. But I haven't figured out how to join them. The READ ME .pdf file speaks only of a single image file. No luck yet with Disk Utility, Toast 5/6, or Stuffit Expander. Could someone tell me what works? (Version 1.2)
| May 28 2004 |
RORY I remember I recently saw JigSaw 1.2 come out on the MacUpdate list. the description said, "Join segmented files." Try searching for it. (Version 1.2)
| Jul 22 2004 |
ANONYMOUS PartWayThere - Expand only the binary with the shortest name to get an image file. Mount that image. It will get all it needs from the other binary segments. (Version 1.2)
