DESCRIPTION
JunkMatcher filters spam using powerful regular expressions, IP query against multiple blacklists (such as SpamCop.net) and various other techniques such as email property matching, HTML final rendering matching, etc. You can match against almost every bit of a message (including attachment filenames and charsets), and the raw material for matching is cleaned out for you to defeat some of the tricks spammers use to obfuscate their messages.

JunkMatcher can be added to Mail.app as a rule so it can be used hand-in-hand with Mail.app's built-in (statistical) junk filter. Users can decide what actions to take on the matched messages (mark as junk/read/flagged/colored, move them to Junk/Trash mailbox etc.).

A self-contained GUI - JunkMatcher Central is also included so you can conduct "Email forensics": testing and building your regular expression patterns, browsing the log file of the past matchings, etc. You can even report spam to SpamCop.net directly from the log window. Many settings are also available in it so you can customize the entire matching process to your heart's content.

UBUCRAIG  Great when it worked.

For weeks I used JunkMatcher in its default mode with terrific results (1Ghz PowerPC, 10.4.8). Dozens of Spam emails that Mail wasn't catching, we moved into the Junk folder, and highlighted so it was easy to see how well it was working.

Then I went to the Apple Store to learn more about Spam Sieve vs. JunkMatcher. There was a person there who knew about both, and I learned how to use the train as ham/train as spam function, and how to make some of the tests "hard."

Within 48 hours of changing tests to "hard" and using train as spam about a dozen times, Mail began to act strangely: the Junk button would take a full minute to send mail to the Junk folder; the program would take two minutes to close; Junk Matcher itself would take five minutes to open - if at all. Attempts to reset JunkMatcher and Mail failed to correct the problems.Fortunately, all sysmptoms disappeared when I unistalled JunkMatcher.

Fool that I am, I'm going to try JunkMatcher again, but leave it in default mode. If it acts up again, I'll move to Spam Sieve.

DIGGER1995  Finally fixed a problem. I was having slow "move to junk" symptoms... started last November or so.. did not associate it with the install of JunkMatcher. If one has an old install of JM one needs to delete the JM application support folder in the user library.

OR edit the JM tests and properties files therein, which is what I did. Working great now. OS X 10.3.9

Details in the JM Help menu!

PASCHION  I could not get it work with 10.4.3.

The log file always is emty and if you try to open one mail in Junkmatcher it will crash. Always. I tried to install and uninstall the aplication a couple of times...

The "manual" is not worth to mention.

o.k. it is free but it does not work on my computer.

RAYFROMNM  The developer has a fix. It's not a Tiger issue, it's an issue of upgrading from 1.5.8 to 1.6.0 or above. See the "Junkmatcher How-To" section under Help. He describes a couple of easy fixes if Junkmatcher stops working after you've upgraded. It stopped working for me, but when I used his solution to fix the problem, everything works great again.

Terrific product! Thanks to Junkmatcher team for keeping it free!

ANONYMOUS  JunkMatcher is great! I receive daily about 30 spam messages and the program now detects almost everything.

TREEHOUSE  Tremendous.

For the majority of spam, a simple install will suffice.

ANONYMOUS  Pity it works only with Mail.app.

Besides, doesn't (yet?) seem to offer an option to kill spam directly on server. Simply don't want this pest on my hard drive any more, not even in a Junk or Trash folder.

ANONYMOUS  When I click on "download", I'm taken to a blank page at Sourceforge. I've experienced this same problem with other software download attempts from Sourceforge. Does anyone have an explanation?

ANONYMOUS  Did you try downloading from one of the other Sourceforge mirror sites? I had no problem.

ANONYMOUS  Incredibly effective! It filters out everything so that I have no email to be bothered with! And that was after I turned off all the obviously useless rules like the ones to catch mail from anyone not in my address book.

This is probably a wonderful toool if you can undersatnd and take the enormous time to set it up to do what you want. Or just use it as it comes and you'll have no more email to worry about.
