NOTAFOOL  I have just downloaded and installed this application and purchased a Licence Key. To date, however, it has completely failed to display any sllde-show at all of my photos, despite repeated attempts. All it does when I press the "Play" button is turn my screen completely black and then crash, with the "Application Quit Unexpectedly" pop-up message appearing. Not at all inspiring. Have I just blown my AUD $25.00 ? Seems so. I am using an iMac7,1 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, running OSX Leopard 10.5.4.

NOTAFOOL  I wrote to the Developer, who requested that I send him the Crash Logs from my Console. I did so and got the reply that I have a "broken font" and to de-install it. I responded that unless I knew WHICH font was broken, how on earth was I to know which font to de-install. I am yet to hear another word from the Developer. I paid good money (probably far too much) for this software and have not yet managed to get it to work for me even once ! In my view it is a lemon.

MORANNON  Obviously, the developers of PhotoPresenter sold there software to Boinx. Before that, the price of PhotoPresenter was at 8 $, now it's at 20 $. I just bought this app a few days ago.I would like the new developers to explain me what caused this huge increase in price.

OLIVER BREIDENBACH  The answer is simple: We think PhotoPresenter is worth much more than $19.95. So even at $19.95 it is a bargain.

MORANNON  I wonder why the previous developers (Arizona Software) sold PhotoPresenter to a very decent price and you do not. I bought two apps from them (PhotoPresenter, GraphClick) and I would not have done this at a higher price. So am looking forward to an overprized update to PhotoPresenter 4. Maybe PhotoPresenter 4 will cost 35 bucks?

MIBRILANE  Quit whining about the price. If it's too high for you, don't buy it. If the developer sees they are not generating sales because the price is too high, they might lower it. This is called MARKETING.

No one is forcing you to buy this software.

MORANNON  Start reading carefully! I already bought this application before PhotoPresenter was sold to Boinx. I'm not complaining about the price but about the unjustified increase in price.

It hate companies that buy apps just to increase the price. If Boinx had written more than a few lines of new code and brought that new version out as version 4, no one would have been complaining because of an increased price.

I'm quite sure that Boinx follows a steb by step increase in price. Arizona Software started at 8 $, Boinx continued at 20 $ whitout having done anything and will end at over 30 $ next year as PhotoPresenter 4 will be released.

ROY VAN DER WONING  Then again, when has a buyout ever been good news to the customer? Generally, it brings the indie developer's drive to innovate to a grinding halt and provides an easy cash cow to some indifferent outfit at the expense of both new and existing customers.

I'd love to see Boinx prove me wrong, but I agree that more than doubling the price while bringing nothing new to the table definitely sets them off at the wrong foot.

JAZZADDICT  The last developers were student developers and were in a position to sell there app for much cheaper than other developers would. $8 was cheap for a cool consumer authoring tool. You don't see shareware for the mac come much cheaper. I'm fine with the $20 price upgrade. I just don't understand why they wouldn't add anything to it first!!! It' not like they're bad developers. I have Fotomagico. It's pretty slick. I'm amazed they wouldn't add a thing to Photopresenter before releasing it. Did they buy the app to develop it or just to charge more for it? Well, I know the answer. They want to develop for it. I don't think they're that scummy. I think they just got of on the wrong foot. They should of incorporated an impressive set of new features before upgrading the price. I would of figured Boinx just wanted Photopresenter to implement some of it's features into Fotomagico and swallow up as much of Photopresenter's user base as possible, but it seems they're keeping Photopresenter in tact; which is cool, but they really need to pump it up with some new features to justify the new price. That's not to say the price isn't fair; I think it is, I just don't think you should take an app and double the price without doing a thing to it.

OLIVER BREIDENBACH  I am very happy about the attention the PhotoPresenter acquisition has brought us. Thanks for all your comments, which will help us to determine the future of PhotoPresenter.

By our careful calculations, an $8 app is not going to be able to finance the ongoing development and marketing necessary to move it forward. In fact, $8 would barely cover the costs of selling that can't be avoided (credit card processing, customer sales support, invoicing, book keeping...) An $8 app can be a good surplus income for an individual developer, but there is no way a professional developer can break even on $8.

Best,

Oliver.

ROY VAN DER WONING  "By our careful calculations, an $8 app is not going to be able to finance the ongoing development and marketing necessary to move it forward."

The issue that many people may take (and in fact already have taken) with this statement is that no substantial "moving forward" has actually occurred before you raised the price of this product. It may be financially beneficial for you to raise funds ahead of development effort, but it does not sit well with (potential) customers.

OLIVER BREIDENBACH  "no substantial "moving forward" has actually occurred"

Thank you for this comment. Actually some substantial moving forward has already occurred, but we have not communicated this well. We have had to make changes to the app in version 3.4 in order to make it work with our sales and support backend, a couple of serious bugs have been fixed and we have added a new theme. All these things benefit existing customers and new ones.

By the way, sales have picked up substantially since we released PhotoPresenter 3.4

Best,

Oliver.

PETE-ON-THE-WEB  I buy software that gives me something I want. PhotoPresenter did this. But then Apple upgraded their system software which broke PhotoPresenter.

Has PP been fixed? No.

Was it a waste of money? Yes.

This is the main reason I stopped buying some shareware programs. They aren't supported when Apple updates their system software.

I used to give a chance on something I liked. But not anymore.

JAZZADDICT  "This is the main reason I stopped buying some shareware programs. They aren't supported when Apple updates their system software."

This really isn't the case for most the shareware I use. Maybe you should look into finding better software. I've found freeware is no better at keeping up with system updates. Sometimes open source software is better with this because they have a community around the software, but I find freeware and open source are left in the dust as much or more than shareware developers because there's less accountability. You just have to find good apps with developers who put a lot of energy into it. What kind of software license the app falls under is not a good indicator of whether the app is gona' stay up to date with system updates.

Btw... PP works for me. Sorry you're having issues with it.

**...

ETNIER  Bad news.

Nice whiz-bang presentation effects but on my brand new 2.8GHz AL iMac it is very very unstable, now crashing every few minutes.

What's worse is that there is no file system involved with this app: you don't create files of any kind. You can only "Save" your work by quitting. I started a project in PhotoPresenter and quickly developed a habit of quitting after every significant change.

If the prefs file gets corrupted and needs to be trashed, you trash all your ongoing projects because they don't exist anywhere else.

I'm sorry I bought this program. The 'shareware' crippling made spending the 8 bucks all but mandatory, but it was money I wouldn't have spent.

F451  First, PhotoPresenter is truly a Mac bargain. Second, Simon the developer, is wonderful to work with. I had an issue whereby PhotoPresenter was not showing all my iPhoto events, and Simon helped me through it by discovering that the error was on my end with iPhoto picking up a backed-up iPhoto library on another hard drive versus where it should have been.

PhotoPresenter is simply one of the best means of viewing your photo library. My entire family enjoys using and viewing it. With the holiday season upon us, I am sure that it will be the most popular Mac app on my Mac.
