Buy Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard for just $25 via Amazon, or buy the Family Pack for $43.99.
DESCRIPTION
Apple Mac OS X Snow Leopard builds on a decade of OS X innovation and success with hundreds of refinements, new core technologies and out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange.

To create Snow Leopard, Apple engineers refined 90 percent of the more than 1,000 projects that make up Mac OS X. Users will notice refinements including a more responsive Finder; Mail that loads messages up to twice as fast; Time Machine with an up to 80 percent faster initial backup; a Dock with Expose integration; QuickTime X with a redesigned player that allows users to easily view, record, trim and share video; and a 64-bit version of Safari 4 that is up to 50 percent faster and resistant to crashes caused by plug-ins.

Snow Leopard is half the size of the previous version and frees up to 7GB of drive space once installed. For the first time, system applications including Finder, Mail, iCal, iChat and Safari are 64-bit and Snow Leopards support for 64-bit processors makes use of large amounts of RAM, increases performance and improves security while remaining compatible with 32-bit applications.

Grand Central Dispatch (GCD) provides a revolutionary new way for software developers to write applications that take advantage of multicore processors. OpenCL, a C-based open standard, allows developers to tap the incredible power of the graphics processing unit for tasks that go beyond graphics.

MONKEYJUNKEY  Many people report problems while updating through the software-update. Try downloading the Combo-Update from the Apple Homepage. That should work.

http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_6_Combo_Update

Besides that Apple Mail Crashed quite often. I got Glims installed. Maybe I have to delete that (gonna try this tomorrow). Any suggestions?

MONKEYJUNKEY  FIXED!

GPG Mail was the problem. It is indispensable to have GPG Mail d55. Earlier versions will cause Mail to crash. Now, everythings fine again.

Get it from here:

Hope this helps.

MACTECHHEAD  I encountered no serious issues with the initial release of 10.6

And again with 10.6.1, no complaints after updating.

Super fast OS, love it!

MELMAN FLINK  Snow Leopard 10.6 removes AppleTalk protocol thereby rendering my old but faithful Apple LaserWriter 16/600PS unable to print.

Just an FYI for any fellow old school printer users.

MATT3141  That's incorrect. That printer *is* supported under Mac OS 10.6. Refer to Knowledgebase article HT3669.

MELMAN FLINK  Update: I was able to get the printer working by changing its IP address and using the LDP protocol. Changing the IP of this series of printers is done via software. In my case, I used another Mac on the network that was running OS 9, and then downloaded Apple Printer Utility which let me talk to the printer and change its IP.

This can also be done via the Terminal but that's above my pay grade.

Interestingly the folks at Apple said this printer could not be used, even though it's listed as a supported model on their site. In any event, it's working like a champ now under Snow Leopard.

Happy ending.

DRG  According to document HT366: "If your printer can only use the AppleTalk protocol, the printer must be connected to, and then shared by, an appropriate AppleTalk-capable printer server." I have a trusty HP LaserJet 6MP printer. It is 12 years old, has printed over 50,000 copies without a single problem, and because of a decision on Apple's part, it's essentially headed to the land fill. Would it have been such a problem to allow us to add the AppleTalk Protocol as an option if we had a printer that needed it? BTW, this info was listed under the Apple printers, NOT the HP printers, so I upgraded without realizing the problem. It appears that the 6MP is supported BUT only via a print sharing situation. By the time you go out, find an appropriate print server and set it up, you might as well buy a new printer. My printer is critical for my business, so I purchased a new printer, but my ecology side is SO ANGRY at Apple for this stupidity, I could just slap Mr Jobs' face!

And even if there was a way to get it to run with Snow Leopard, the TIME involved makes it not worth the effort. What ever happened to PLUG AND PLAY??? Even with the new Brother printer I purchased, I had to download the drivers manually.

MSWFUJOWDFFYC  Problem installing via Software Update on a Macbook/intel. Don't try it. Download and use the combo update. That hung, but after a couple of extra restarts I'm up and running again.

FANGOO  Snappier well worth $30. My only problem so far has been with Mail - when I download attached pics Mail frequently crashes, but it reopens quickly. Only an annoyance so far... They must have priced this one when Jobs was out updating his liver!

MACFOOL  10.6 installed without drama onto a e09 Mac Mini 2 GB over 10.5.8 and corrected the annoying flicker and low contrast issue when using the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter to a 1080i SAMSUNG DLP as display. Image quality went from marginal to impressive overall. Fan runs slower and heat is a few degrees cooler, too.

ST00P!D M0NK3Y  This has sped up my Intel iMac considerably. Startup and Shutdown times are insanely quick now, user switching is lightning fast, and even my games seem to run smoother and have richer color. For just a 30 dollar upgrade, this is awesome. It seems to have fixed most of the issues I was having. Thought it might have been a hardware issue... turns out the computer just needed some love from Apple. Snow Leopard rocks! >.
