DESCRIPTION

WhatSize allows you to quickly measure the size in bytes of a given folder and all subfolders and files within it. You would be surprised at how many useless files might be laying around on your hard disks. The files and folders are automatically sorted by size, with the biggest sizes first. WhatSize helps find out what files are taking up all of that space. Then it makes it really easy to remove or move those files. You'd be surprised how many useless files are lying around on your Mac's hard disk.

While the app is measuring a folder the user can browse the files within that folder and immediately see the size in bytes. Hidden files, cache files, directories will all show up with their corresponding size. This application is similar to the ancient NeXTSTEP, DarkForest.

Once the measuring of a folder has ended the user can also view the information by filtering for particular file sizes or types. The user can also move unwanted files and folder in the corresponding Trash bin similar to the Finder's Delete button.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 4.8.3:
  • Major fixes in memory usage. For example while measuring a Volume with 350GB worth of data the app will consume 250MB less of memory.
  • Minor speed improvements as well.
  • Improvements to the Delocalizer engine.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

DOTMACX  I wish I could give zero stars.

My free version automatically updated itself to a newer version which requires a license!

Hello! You can't do that unless you make it VERY clear that by clicking the update button you lose your previous full version.

It's low enough charging for previously free software. Automatically installing over it is even worse.

VASHREMIX  I used to love this app when it was free.

I was disappointed when it "updated" itself to paid-only version.

Those looking for a free application may be able to use "grand perspective"

Good Luck

JIMW  Buy this product

or

- Buy File Buddy and get all the '1 trick ponies' rolled up into a single app with good support

or

- Do the following which will approximate the info from this product.

Open a Finder Window

Choose the Drive or Folder you wish to view

View in 'List' mode

Under View - View Options check Size and "Calculate All Sizes

Option-Click the arrow next to the folder or drive to open all subfolders within it

Take a short break

Click on the 'Size' column to sort by size.

All of your folders subfolders and files will be sorted by size within each folder.

This probably can be all incorporated into a single Automator script that should not take over 30 min to create - even for a novice.

But no matter what - be an informed consumer.

DON MORRIS  Adequate interface, but the sunburst (pie chart) view seems almost an afterthought; it's quite cluttered, particularly compared to DaisyDisk. I do like the source list, and the options available in the contextual menus. Price is right, too.

GMANDLER  Great product! Love it as I was down to 2G on my Macbook after installing Leopard....in about 10 minutes I found 10G of fat that I no longer needed. I had tried to find these big files in Finder, but WhatSize made it so simple.

Love that I can click on a folder and it opens it in Finder for easy delete and trash removal.

Well worth the $13!

As for the ratings below I gave the Stability a 4 - but it may well deserve a 5.

APPLEHC  Hey developer, faking reviews again? This is the most ridiculous dev on the whole Mac market. After I had a dispute about the included eSellerate engine not working he blacklisted my serial. Great guy!

EPRINT  This software company wants me to pay for the product twice. Not that the program is bad, but when you see the message, "The unregistered version of this software can measure up to 20 GB of data files.

To lift this limit and support a small software development company you will need to purchase a license."

I have the license - the screen to enter the number repeatedly indicates i have the wrong number.

Could there be a bug?

XENOPHILE  So why are you posting this help request here? Email the developer and then you can describe his customer service in your review.

Or are you perhaps a mind reader and so already know the developer wants you to pay twice for his software?

MSWWSM  It is good software. It is worth US$13. It is however grossly inappropriate to slam an auto-update that changes the licensing arrangement to a paid-license requirement without significant warnings to that effect.

You know how Apple tells you if you have QT Pro license and upgrade to the newest full revision of QT, they tell you you'll have to buy a new license for the Pro features. Yeah, that.

To do anything less is deceptive and tantamount to consumer fraud.

ISTRA  this is a fine application and I find the price also not such a horror!

What I find annoying is that when I use e.g. Xslimmer to save some space, WhatSize gives a message that "it has tampered with" and doesn't even start!

This for me is self contradicting, both appz serve the purpose of making our machines lighter off excessive weight, but WhatSize claims more rights on my system!? It doesn't allow me to take away of it (in my case) some useless code?!

Come on!

On the other hand it has a nice interface and graphic part, the colour scheme is functional and onobtrussive and works fine.
