DESCRIPTION

MisFox... This application is only useful for Mac OS X. Under Mac OS X several internet settings which were available under Mac OS 8 and 9 are still present and are still used by most internet applications, but they are no longer accessible by the user. So if these settings gets corrupt for some reason there's no way to repair these settings anymore. MisFox makes some of the most important internet settings accessible again.

MisFox will show all the file mappings settings and the protocol helpers. You can inspect these settings, but you can also edit, delete and create new items for these settings.

The File Mappings are used for many tasks. First they will translate the "content-type" and file extensions which are used in the Internet into the file type and creator codes which are used on the Mac. Second they do define what to do with files of a certain file type after they are downloaded from the internet (for example they define that ".sit" files should be processed by Stuffit Expander). Protocol Helpers are used to find the right application to handle certain internet protocols. So a web browser will use the protcol helper settings to find a news reader when clicking on a "news:" link in order to open this link. Since Mac OS X 10.2 there's no way to define the default news reader in the system settings anymore. So you can do this in MisFox now.

	Jul 17 2007	ZO219 I'm a little concerned to see the developer release this as if it were in any way new ... when I see it is exactly the same as years ago in Classic Mac. And the file types and mappings reflect this, as well as the old, old choice of IE 4.5 for browser. How long ago was that? RCDefaultApp by RixStep is the true file mapper for OS X, and the only reason to use MIsFox is if you have simple enough needs. The developer's description is not entirely the case ...but I think this version may be a bit more editable. I'm concerned that noobs and switchers may get confused by all those file types that don't even exist in OS X ... which is, after all, what we're working with. (Version 2.0)		0

	Oct 26 2005	HACKIT98 Excellent app. Much easier than the manual way of doing this. The only problem is that when I deleted an entry it did not refresh the table. It was still there. Of course, a restart of the app showed that it was properly deleted, but it was a little odd. Otherwise, excellent app. (Version 1.2.1)		0

	Nov 21 2003	MATS LONGERHART It's a nice application and it's free (and it's a pity how MacOS X sent us into the past in too many respects, being the one addressed by this app one of them - other "fixers" aren't and we're spending money on them to get back feautres MacOS did have). However, More Internet (which is also free) does the same thing this app does and it's a preference pane, which is a more convenient thing as far as I'm concerned. (Version 1.2)		0

	Nov 21 2003	GREENIE This is an immensely useful app -- easy to use and reliable. It makes up for the confusing lack of features in OS X that some of us relied upon in OS 9 Internet Settings and Internet Config. Enables the user to change File Mappings (i.e. what file is opened with what app) and Protocol Settings (e.g. what is launched to handle ftp protocol). Personally, I like having this as an application rather than a preference pane. (Version 1.2)		0
