I replied to the emails you sent us. The best thing is to discuss this over email.

BANNERMAN Slick looking but Handbrake is way better. There doesn't seem to be a simple way to convert a DVD to a single quicktime file. Creates a whole bunch of useless files from the VOB folder. The help section just takes you to the site which is doesn't give you any info on how to convert to a single quicktime file. Bought this as part of a bundle along with some other useless apps on macupdate and wishing I hadn't . (Version 5.1.3)

ABRASIF The main movie is in single file. The extras are in separate files so you can include/exclude them as you want when taking the movie on your iPod/iPhone. (Version 5.1.3)

STEVE WISOTSKY I've had DVD Remaster since the promo in 2008. After getting the new version of DVD Remaster Pro in the latest promo, I emailed Metakine about gifting my original copy (version 4.x). Without hesitation they emailed the new registration info for my daughter. I replied with a thank you and asked them if they could send me the link to download the 4.x disk image. Was I surprised when I got an email back with the following: "I sent you a license for DVDRemaster 5.x Pro so she can just download the latest version from our website" How many companies would do that? A great gesture from a great company (and great software). Thank you Metakine! (Version 5.1.3)

RALPHBLN Support is amazing. DVDRemaster had a problem detecting the correct aspect ratio of some of my DVDs. I emailed the metakine guys and got immediate reply. They did everything to track down the problem and sent me a patched version. Now I'm a happy camper. I use DVDRemaster to shrink movies and TV shows to watch them on the iPhone. Speed-wise DVDRemaster outperforms Handbrake which I used before (DVDRemaster is roughly twice as fast). DVDRemaster has a much more logical UI than Handbrake. In Handbrake, you have to select every single track of a DVD using a drop down box and set parameters for each of them. Annoying especially for TV shows where every episode is a track. In DVDRemaster, you have everything on one screen and just check or uncheck checkboxes. DVDRemaster also sports a small preview pane of the currently selected track, the lack of which I find most annoying in Handbrake, since I never know which track contains what. Apart from converting DVD content to a multitude of formats for Mac, iPod/iPhone and whatnot, it can create shrinked images of your DVDs (with all the menus included, but smaller in size) and extract selected features like video or audio only. DVDRemaster is accompanied by an app named FairMount (also made by Metakine) which lets you access copy protected DVDs. Considering speed, feature richness, user friendlyness and the excellent support, I can only recommend this app. (Version 5.1.3)

NATE456789 I just purchased the package deal and was pretty excited about trying DVDRemaster Pro 5.1.3. I have been using Handbrake 0.9.3 for about 8 months and have been pretty happy with it. Plus it is free. I have converted about 700 movies for my apple Tv with very few problems. I have two surround sound setups. Bose and just a Newer Sony Bravia system. Both take digital inputs for audio. This is essential for true surround and movie theater sound. I was disappointed to see (Or not Hear) the true Dolby 5.1 signal was not passed thru in the Apple TV file like HandBrake does. I can not find any other settings allowing me to do AC3 Pass thru. Am I missing something here? If anyone knows I would really like to give this software a fair shake. I am just glad I bought it in the bundle. I have already figured out there are a few duds in the bundle. I was really hoping this wasn't one of them. How can you have a real home theater with out true 5.1 surround sound? Another plus with Handbrake is after the conversion it will open metaX and add the encoded movie to the que for tagging. This application has some strong competition (That's free even!) if you are expecting to have full 5.1 dolby surround sound from AppleTV / ipod converted files - This is the official response from the developers. "This is something that DVDRemaster doesn't currently support. However, this is a feature that will be included a in subsequent release. We will keep you posted." They do not support AC3 audio pass thru. (Version 5.1.3)

KDIMITT I may sound really stupid but I thought ripping a dvd and copying it is against federal law. It sounds like this is rather common and not a problem so I am surprised that government hasn't stepped in and shut down the sale of these programs. So am I way wrong and doing this is legal or what? KENTO There are several DVD-related (ripping, viewing, reformatting, whatever) apps in the current MU Spring Bundle. There are a few British and a few Japanese DVDs that I'd like to view. Since it's only a few (and I've already got enough DVD players), I'd prefer avoiding the purchase of a region free player. Will any of these apps make it possible to watch/rip DVDs from other regions?

NORIKER Have you searched for a region free code for your existing dvd players? Often you just have to enter a sort of cheat and you can set your region to 0 and play anything. (Version 5.1.3)
| Jun 8 2009 |
RICHARDBRONOSKY Be careful about setting your region code to none. I use MyDVDEdit to edit the menus/flow/IFOs of DVDs that I backup for my 2 year old. I edit them so that they go straight to the movie without having to press any buttons. (This is GREAT for in-vehicle DVD systems!!!) I've noticed a lot of DVDs have commands in them like: if regionCode=0 or regionCode=255 {goto blank_1_frame_infinitely_repeating_video_clip} I of course delete those lines out, because I can on a disk I burn. If you remove the region code from your DVD player you would find that the original disk just displayed a blank screen. Hacker beware. (Version 5.1.3)

NORIKER Thanks RICHARDBRONOSKY, I never knew that. I must have played nearly a hundred DVDs and never had that problem. But you can always set it back if you want to, so that shouldn't be a problem. (Version 5.1.3)

BS0D DVD RP has to be used with something else on the side, it's pretty useless on its own. you can't extract anything because it wont dump protected dvds. i have to say, i havent really found a use for it. it just happened to be in the MU promo bundle but lots of other apps do the job better and sometimes quicker. RALPHBLN DVDRemaster comes with a utility called FairMount which allows you to use it on copy protected DVDs. (Version 5.1.3)
| Jun 12 2009 |
BS0D Thanks for the hint. Fairmount does sound familiar, but where do I find it? (Version 5.1.3)
| Jun 12 2009 |
BS0D oops, sorry found it in the disk image! I need to learn how to use it now... but I have other cool tools that do the job real good so we'll see which I like best.
| Jun 12 2009 |
RALPHBLN You have to install VLC player because FairMount depends on stuff that comes with it. After doing so, just launch FairMount before or after inserting your copy protected DVD into the drive. Mac OS will then mount the disk as if it weren't copy protected. (Version 5.1.3)

MADRUSSIAN So this might be a rather ignorant question but I am pretty new to this so please bear with me :-) I am reading some of the comments and the bundle description and am unsure about the purpose of using tools like RipIt and DVDRemaster (or MTR and Handbrake) together? My (limited) understanding is that they are both DVD ripping tools but used for different purposes? (Version 5.1.3)

MISHA + MTR and RipIt get the DVD off the disc and onto your Mac. + DVDRemaster Pro and Handbrake re-encode the DVD to the kind of media you want. + MTR and RipIt are NOT necessary in the process. DVDRemasterPro and Handbrake can work directly with the DVD. However, getting the DVD off the disc and onto your Mac will improve the encoding speeds, since the drive can become the bottleneck (+ wear & tear). + The exception is if you are looking only to do full uncompressed backups of discs to your Mac's hard driven -- then you must use MTR or RipIt and Handbrake and DVDRemaster Pro are unnecessary. (Version 5.1.3)

OLGAAGLO I'd like to follow up on this question: I'd like to create a backup copy of a DVD that gets a lot of wear. I used RipIt to pull the movie off the DVD onto my hard drive. I wanted to use DVDRemaster to then create my backup DVD, but when I try to find my hard drive version under DVDRemaster's "Source" , it does not show up. What am I doing wrong? What is the best way to create a backup copy? (Version 5.1.3)

MISHA I'm not sure what is going on exactly -- please contact the developers of DVDRemasterPro: support (at) metakine.com I'm sure they'll be able to help you! (Version 5.1.3)
