STEVE WISOTSKY  I've had DVD Remaster since the promo in 2008. After getting the new version of DVD Remaster Pro in the latest promo, I emailed Metakine about gifting my original copy (version 4.x). Without hesitation they emailed the new registration info for my daughter. I replied with a thank you and asked them if they could send me the link to download the 4.x disk image. Was I surprised when I got an email back with the following: "I sent you a license for DVDRemaster 5.x Pro so she can just download the latest version from our website"

How many companies would do that?

A great gesture from a great company (and great software).

Thank you Metakine!

PEDRO FARDILHA  I already rated DVDRemaster before, so I'm just going to give my impression of the new 5.x version.

I'm a long time user of both DVDRemaster and Handbrake and before this 5.x version I found myself using more Handbrake for 2 main reasons:

Handbrake has a nice queue option and their compression of dark scenes, when using 2-pass encoding, was slightly better than the one of DVDRemaster 4.x (although at the expense of more 30 ~ 45 minutes per compression).

DVDremaster makers (Metakine) has a long track of listening to their costumers and the evolution of this app is the proof of that.

Not only they implemented a queue on version 5, but also their re-compression engine is even better now and it shows, specially on dark scenes.

As an added bonus I like the fact that chapter markers are directly embedded on the new file.

So now I'm back to DVDRemaster.

I prefer the interface, the re-compression is faster than the one of Handbrake and it has all the features that I need.

Overall I'm quite pleased with it and I think that Metakine deserves to be properly praised for the good work done here and for being a company with such a good relation with their user.

BAS PENNINGS  I bought version 4 of DVDRemaster Pro just a few weeks ago. After upgrading to version 5 (which is free for version 4 buyers after december 2008) my activation code did not seem to work anymore. After sending an email to Metakine support I received a new activation code within 5 minutes! So customer support: A+.

HEILEI  Does anyone know if there's a user manual somewhere? I've searched every possible location on their website, but nothing so far.... Am I just blind, or isn't there one...? Why, if I may ask...?

SJK  There's no manual. You could contact the developer directly to ask why not and request one for the future.

RALPHBLN  Support is amazing. DVDRemaster had a problem detecting the correct aspect ratio of some of my DVDs. I emailed the metakine guys and got immediate reply. They did everything to track down the problem and sent me a patched version.

Now I'm a happy camper. I use DVDRemaster to shrink movies and TV shows to watch them on the iPhone.

Speed-wise DVDRemaster outperforms Handbrake which I used before (DVDRemaster is roughly twice as fast). DVDRemaster has a much more logical UI than Handbrake. In Handbrake, you have to select every single track of a DVD using a drop down box and set parameters for each of them. Annoying especially for TV shows where every episode is a track. In DVDRemaster, you have everything on one screen and just check or uncheck checkboxes. DVDRemaster also sports a small preview pane of the currently selected track, the lack of which I find most annoying in Handbrake, since I never know which track contains what.

Apart from converting DVD content to a multitude of formats for Mac, iPod/iPhone and whatnot, it can create shrinked images of your DVDs (with all the menus included, but smaller in size) and extract selected features like video or audio only.

DVDRemaster is accompanied by an app named FairMount (also made by Metakine) which lets you access copy protected DVDs.

Considering speed, feature richness, user friendlyness and the excellent support, I can only recommend this app.

HMURCHISON  Nice new UI haven't tried the features yet but so far I like what I see. Also there were no upgrade issues for me and I bought this through the Macupdate Bundle. Kudos to the the devs for not treating bundle purchasers as second class citizens. I'm glad I could support your efforts financially. I'll toss a review up after i've kicked the tires more.

WALRUSCP  Debating upgrading. Odd that it has only been 10 months since I had to upgrade to 5.0, and here we go again. Still, fast encoding has me intrigued. I'll post more after testing the 6.0 demo and compare it to 5.3.

IAMDORIAN  Great product at an affordable price. Bought this with the MacUPdate Bundle a while back. Worth every penny, and then some. Keep up the product development, you're gaining a loyal Mac audience . . and thanks.

REVCO  Great piece of software. I think it produces better results than Handbrake. My only wishes are to include Chapters makers on exported movies and a manual option to tweak the removal of black borders.

FWIW You might want to fix the typo in the Help file. You spell Developpers with one 'p'.

DEMOLITION  Holypoly,

If you check DVDRemaster's help documentation, "Developers" is misspelled as "Developpers". That's what Revco was pointing out.

As far as I can tell, the misspelling has been there since this app's first iteration. However, I suppose we can excuse it because English does not appear to be the first language of the folks at Metakine (I think they're from France?).
