ROBK  I searched on the DVDReamster Pro website to learn about their software license.

Is it a per computer license or per user license?

DVD2OneX provides a PER user license. This means you can install DVD2OneX on any computer you own -- Windows or PC.

Is the DVDRemater Pro license as liberal??

ABRASIF  Hi ROBK,

The license is per user meaning that you can use it on all your personal computers.

LOUPIDABOU  Whatever.

64 bits didn't give me anything, you can run 64 bits apps in 10.5, and the new quicktime player has less features than the old one, but this isn't about SL (it was about the upgrade policy).

I suggest any potential user reading this to try the demo which is free at all times and decide for themselves.

PLOTH  This software does work, MOSTLY. There are a few DVDs that won't work on it. When contacted support just says "it will take quite some time to fix"

For the dvds it does do, the quality is VERY low compared to the file size.

Then to top things off - They only issue free upgrades to software for TWO MONTHS!! The new version 6 is 10 seconds faster (for a 6min rip) and they want $10 to upgrade unless you bought #5 less than 2 months ago. Because of this I may try DVD2One again but I have used Handbrake for 90% of my 400+ library & it is the best I have tried so far.

I regret buying this software.

Handbrake does ALL the dvds I throw at it - (including the ones DVDremaster can't). Handbrake is faster. Handbrake is MUCH higher quality for the same size file. Handbrake is FREE!

Save your money use Handbrake.

ABRASIF  Just wanted to clarify a lot of incorrect facts in this post.

1- You understood or update policy incorrectly. Updates within a major version (e.g. 5.0 to 5.1) are always free. However, when we release a new major version (e.g. 5.3 to 6.0) there is a slight update cost. Since a new major version comes out more or less every year you get free updates for a year. On top of that, we have a grace period were customers who purchased the previous major version in the two months prior to the release of the new major version are entitled to a free update to the new major version. Moreover, we have really low priced update available so our customers can move to the latest version if they wish. This is a lot more than most company offers.

2- DVDRemaster has various quality presets. If a particular preset doesn't suits your needs you can simply select an higher quality preset.

3- We try to address the problems found by our users. Due to DVD accessibility it sometimes take more time than others.

I hope this clarify things.

PLOTH  To charge for an upgrade within 3 months of buying a product is crazy IMO and has led me to going back to looking at DVD2Onex etc etc.

I know there are presets but to get better quality from DVD Remaster the time taken to process is FAR too long compared with Handbrake AND the file size is nearly DOUBLE for the same quality.

I have played around a lot trying to get acceptable results on a huge range of dvds.

ABRASIF  Again, we don't force you to update. If you want to stay with the version you purchased you are free to do so. For example, if you purchased Mac OS 10.5 3 months before 10.6 came out you are free to stay with 10.5 or you may purchase the update to 10.6. It's exactly the same thing with DVDRemaster.

PLOTH  I hardly call this version 6 a 'major update' - the speed difference is minimal as are the other features. Other software companies offer free upgrade REGARDLESS if it is a version change within 6 months. This keeps customers happy and loyal and avoids charging TWICE for virtually the same thing within a year.

LOUPIDABOU  Snow Leopard was released August 28. It was a free upgrade only for purchases since June 8. A bit more than 2 months.

Everybody seems happy with that.

Also, I'm more than satisifed by the new features. Support for turbo & especially multi-audio was important to me. Totally worth 9.95$...

And for the speed, of course 10 seconds out of a 4 minutes encode does not sound important, but that's a really bad test. Saving 10-15 minutes on a 70-80 minutes encode is nice.

You sound like you have an agenda. If you think the upgrade is not worth 9.95 because you do not like the new features, well just don't buy it and keep using what you paid for. If you want new features that you didn't pay for originally, paying a small amount for them seems reasonable to me.

PLOTH  Sorry you're right it was 10 second on a 17 minute convert. if it saves you 10 minutes per 80 min rip I guess that is something.

SL was WELL worth the upgrade path - it is a major change with 64bit & a few features that have really saved me time & money.

DVDRemaster on the other hand has very few features - and it doesn't work properly either. For a number of my dvds it doesn't work - but Aimersoft, DVD2One and the free Handbrake work fine on them. - My 'agenda' is to let others know my experience...that DVDRemaster IMO is not worth the money.

M. LUTHER  Sweet! I had v. 1 of this product and decided to see if it would let me upgrade. Was able to upgrade to the 6.0 Pro version for only $9.95, so I took the plunge. So you don't need to be coming from v. 5 but any previous version to upgrade, apparently.

FHF  I updated to 6.0 pro from V5; only USD $9.95, not that big a deal. A new feature is 'no compression', handy when you want to grab the movie only but don't need to compress (and possibly degrade) the movie.

Used DVDRemaster 6.0 to compress a 6.8 Gb movie to fit on a single-layer DVD disc; using 'Fast Transcode', 'movie only', it took about twelve minutes on my four-year-old PowerBook G4. I'd say that's pretty fast.

WALRUSCP  Debating upgrading. Odd that it has only been 10 months since I had to upgrade to 5.0, and here we go again. Still, fast encoding has me intrigued. I'll post more after testing the 6.0 demo and compare it to 5.3.

FIZIK  Another note: if you have Toast, it works just fine with FairMount mounted disks...

FIZIK  A follow-up to my review: I may not have been sufficiently clear, but DVDRemaster saves the DVD to a folder on the HD; I use Toast solely to write an image file from the folder but it may be not necessary as DVD Remaster itself (and Disk Utility for sure) may be able to handle this on its own,

FIZIK  The interface is a bit clunky. To make a backup of a licensed DVD, one must launch FairMount first and wait till it mounts the DVDs and then proceed to launch DVDRemaster and select the images mounted by FairMount as sources. After that, just wait and voila. Works about as fast as MacTheRipper and I haven't had a DVD encryption yet it was unable to handle. I am very happy with the program and am surprised about some of the negative reviews and their claim of failure. I give it a full 4.5 stars, P.S. After I remaster, I usually save to HD with Toast for the event when the purchased DVD may become unreadable and I'd need a new DVD; that may not be necessary as DVDRemaster has an ability to burn, so it might be able to save an image as well -- I did not try as I am used to Toast.
