TNEF's Enough allows Macs to read and extract files from Microsoft TNEF stream files. The files are usually received by SMTP based e-mail programs from Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft Outlook users. The SMTP based e-mail program will usually receive either a MIME attachment named "winmail.dat" or a MIME attachment with the type "application/ms-tnef."
The file is a rich text (or MAPI) message that is sent from Outlook to Exchange. When Exchange sends the message to an outside server it writes the MAPI message as a MIME attachment. The unfortunate side effect of this plan is if the Outlook user has someone in their address book as a person who can receive "Rich Text" then the user will receive the TNEF file whether the user uses Outlook or not.
MARK_CAIRNS ...or just ask the person sending you the E-mail to NOT save the E-mail as RTF (which is how the conflict of windat is created in the first place. Ask them to save the Text as "TEXT" or "DOC" and that'll sort the problem. (Version 2.0)
DRDUL This is a must-have app. I just switched to a Mac from Windows, and from Outlook to Apple Mail, and couldn't figure out what to do with the winmail.dat files. With TNEF's Enough in my dock, I just drag the file onto the TNEF's Enough icon, and then choose which files to extract and where I want them to go. Great piece of work! (I can't understand why this functionality isn't built into Apple Mail.) (Version 2.0)
THOMAS This is exactly what I needed. No more forward issues from those PC people. Now I can open winmail.dat and get the files out. AWESOME!!! (Version 2.0)
/USR/BIN/PAUL Does wonders! This is exactly what I was looking for and I love the fact that you are able to set preferences for what happens after it decodes. This is one feature that would be cool to have: build a plug-in to OS X server / Postfix so that it automatically does this for all incoming mail. (Version 2.0)
