DESCRIPTION
RarMe is an AppleScript Studio application that uses the command line utility 'rar' (http://www.rarlab.com/) to create RAR archives. In order to use RarMe you must download and install RAR.

RarMe is still in very early stages of development and is very rough around the edges. It is fairly functional, but many of the features of 'rar' are still not supported. It does not yet check your input before attempting to create an archive, and errors can be gained with very little practice.

WHAT'S NEW
Version 0.5:
  • Auto-completes file name and output path when input folder/file is selected
  • Create solid archives, either independent or dependent
  • Option to keep partially extracted files when extraction fails
  • Option to keep the original archive date when amending archives
  • Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) compatible
  • Option to make input fields editable or drag & drop enabled is now in Preferences
  • Removed the installer until further notice
  • Fixed a problem where the option to stop switches scanning wouldn't work
  • It shouldn't be possible now to have conflicting path options
  • Spaces no longer escaped when they needn't be (should fix main errors from 0.4)
  • Application path name spaces escaped
  • Fixes typos
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.2 or later, RAR installed.

AN.ONYMOUS  Ridiculously complicated installation :

1. In order to use RarMe the command line application 'rar' must be installed inside the RarMe application. You can get 'rar' from http://www.rarlab.com/

2. Extract the folder named "rar" from the archive and locate the UNIX executable "rar".

3. Place RarMe in the directory you wish to install it into.

4. Right click on RarMe and choose "Show Package Contents".

5. Double click on the "Contents" folder.

6. Drag the RAR application into the "Resources" folder.

7. You should now be able to use RarMe!

CASTLE  With the release of SimplyRAR I'm getting a few questions about the status of RarMe. There are three points to be addressed:

Firsty, RarMe has no been abandoned but is not in active development. Updates will happen only when I find the time, which is not very often.

Secondly, people are asking why SimplyRAR doesn't require RAR to be installed and RarMe does. The answer is simply that the RAR license prohibits such distribution of RAR without the author's written permission. Despite several requests I've never even managed to get a response from the authors of RAR, let alone permission. SimplyRAR presumably had better luck. Until I do get written permission I will continue to respect the RAR license and distribute RarMe without RAR included.

Thirdly, (RANT ON) the slowness of RarMe development is partly due to the lack of donations. I don't say this out of greed - anyone who bothered to click on the Donate tab will have seen that I don't ask for donations to be sent to me, but to several charitable causes I support. I don't feel hugely inspired to put work in on RarMe when so few people support these important causes. Just $1 to any of the listed charities will make a difference. If we all put more support in to causes like these I guarantee you the world would be a better place.(/RANT OFF)

PHOTO TIM  Really wasn't any big deal to get to work. The installer didn't work, but simply adding the 'rar.exe' to the app wasn't any big deal.

It seems the developer is on the right track, and I for one look forward to future updates.

ANONYMOUS  I can't get this application to work to save my life. Is this the only way to create RAR archives on a Mac? Good God this is ridiculous...

MAC STARFISH  Steven: Not being able to include aliases is rar's fault, not RarMe's. Since it is a predominantly PC based archive format aliases would be little used anyway. Installation from the command line is because rar is shareware, not freeware, so I cannot include it with RarMe or supply an installer, as explained in the readme. As noted, I will try to have this problem fixed by RarMe 0.3, but it'll be RarLab's decision. I feel your comments are overly critical of RarMe - these flaws are not RarMe's. RarMe is just a wrapper.

STEVEN  Cannot have aliases in archives

Installing is difficult. you need to install rar-commandline. Also note that it is the rar-application that needs to be installed and not the folder.
