DESCRIPTION
TeXShop is a TeX previewer for Mac OS X, written in Cocoa. Since pdf is a native file format on OS X, TeXShop uses "pdftex" and "pdflatex; rather than "tex" and "latex" to typeset; these programs in the standard teTeX distribution of TeX produce pdf output instead of dvi output.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.26:
  • The TeXShop/Engines/Inactive folder contains two scripts from Daniel Becker which call texcount to count active words in a TeX source file. These engines were promised in 2.25 but erroneously omitted. They are in 2.26. To obtain them, quit TeXShop and move the entire Engines folder from ~/Library/TeXShop to the Desktop. Then restart TeXShop. TeXShop will create a new Engines folder. Merge in any changes you have made in the old Engines folder on the desktop to the new folder.

  • Juan Luis Varona sent new Program and Encoding macros which display the various choices, so it is not necessarily to look up the wording of these choices. A few days later, Ramon M. Figueroa-Centeno send similar but fancier macros. Ramon's macros are now in TeXShop. To obtain them, quit TeXShop and move the entire Macros folder from ~/Library/TeXShop to the Desktop. Then restart TeXShop. TeXShop will create a new Macros folder. Merge in any changes you made to the old Macros on the desktop to the new copy, using the Macro Editor.

  • A memory leak introduced by the code to split the Preview window in 2.25 is fixed. The bug was similar to the old flaw in PDFKit which caused memory to be gradually used up when typesetting a document many times, but this time the bug was caused by me.

  • A bug in the zoom code for the preview window when using multiple monitors is fixed.

  • A bug which caused TeXShop to ignore a "% !TEX TS-program = ..." command when typesetting from a file with an associated root file is fixed.

  • The French localization is improved.

  • A localization error caused the "Split Window" icon on the Preview Window toolbar to display strange text. This is fixed.

  • A bug caused the Preview Window's toolbar to vanish temporarily if the user tried to move certain text portions of the toolbar. This is fixed.

  • One of the keyboard zoom shortcuts acted only on the top portion of the Preview window when split. This is fixed.

  • The TeX mdimporter code distributed with TeXShop in 2.25 contained only i386 code. Now it contains code for both PPC and i386.

M.U. MOORE  Good GUI for writing LaTeX and PdfTex stuff, though not as good as the Alpha/OzTeX combo back in the old days..

Well, after all this one is free!

Keep on the good work.

JEFF WRAGG  We have used TeXShop extensively in our department (Physics & Astronomy) for a couple of years now. Students and faculty love it. We use the current betas, (up to 2.1b7 now) and all is well. We formerly used iTeXMac, but switch to TeXShop because it was better. Not sure if that is still the case, but we are not motivated to switch back for now.

AMARTSIN  Very slow on large TeX files (ca. 1 MB): global substitutions take forever. Poor synchronization: at times would not syncronize at all, at other times, would produce a completely irrelevant selection. Ogre Kit is disfunctional: live update repeats the first updated line in each line thereafter; the window reappears by itself (even when it has been closed) after computer wakes up and is impossible to close after that (you can close it only by quitting TexShop). I am working on a large translation project and have to use Ogre Kit, but this is a torture. Used to be much better ...

PROFINITE  Indeed, Textures is dead despite BlueSky having come out of a not-even-alpha release for OS X. We need to get our typset done NOW, and TeXShop is what all Textures users would turn to.

Good GUI and true OS X interface. TeXShop is here to stay and serve us well.

J. MATHEWS  Elgin Johnston and I wrote a calculus book using Textures. We tried to remain faithful to Textures, which served us well, but I gave up on Textures and have switched to TeXShop. It is a very good program.

DAVID LE PAGE  TeXShop is an excellent application -- thank you very much. I haven't used LaTeX previously, and am sure this application has eased my baptism of fire.

Unfortunately, I cannot get the latest update to work - the icon bounces in the dock, but nothing else happens. So I've reverted to the previous version, which still works just fine.

I'm running Panther X.3.9.

ERIC D  The best TeX front end for mac osX.

It's easy to use with a lot of features to have a personalised workspace.

I used to work with Texture in mac os 9 but even if Textures would be released in os X I don't think I could come back.

If you want to use *all* the mac fonts TexShop is fully compatible with Xetex : you get the best text editing.

ANONYMOUS  TexShop is a great application.

Thanks for version 2.01, it corrected the bugs

in 2.00, except that some of the French translation

was lost (in particular the Typeset button).

VADOR  This is about v1.37:

1) it works fine with X.3.9.

2) it doesn't seem to work with X.2.8 (launches briefly, then quits unexpectedly -- typical behavior of Panther apps). Jaguar users should backup the previous release (TeXShop 1.35e) before trying this one...
