DESCRIPTION
BitTorrent is a protocol for distributing files. It identifies content by URL and is designed to integrate seamlessly with the web. Its advantage over plain HTTP is that when multiple downloads of the same file happen concurrently, the downloaders upload to each other, making it possible for the file source to support very large numbers of downloaders with only a modest increase in its load.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.3 or later.

KPS  Simply doesn't work. Assuming a download starts at all (fewer than 1 in 5 do) it just dies off and goes to zero. Have tried it on several different networks in different parts of the country and it has NEVER worked long enough to complete a single download. Even torrents that have hundreds of seeds either fail to start at all or crawl along at a useless 2K/sec for a few minutes before coming to a complete stop.

Nice idea, but a complete waste of time in implementation. Yeah, I know some people get it to work, but I've tried 3 different versions on several completely different networks and it has NEVER once lived up to its promise. Obviously it could be some sort of configuration issue, but the app gives no useful diagnostics, no real way to change settings that actually help and no way to test what is happening. I've tried it on several different computers as well and it's always the same -- all hype, no function.

SPRINGHEELMAC  I had the same problem, until I went into the prefs and adjusted the upload/download speeds. It helps to lower the upload speeds, at least until you get a complete file. Then when I'm done, I increase it while my computer is idle so others can get it quickly. It could also be the particular torrent. The one I tried was obscure and didn't have that many seeds, but I got it! Overall, I find BitTorrent to be my favorite; it does exactly what its supposed to do (upload and download torrents) and none of the other CPU-hoggin' crap!

LJH  This latest version of BitTorrent is -in my opinion- complete rubbish. It's now been given lots of pretty buttons and stuff, which is unnecessary really as you want your Bit Torrent app to just be in the background downloading.

The biggest problem for me is that it doesn't appear to work properly; ALL downloads just die out after about 5 minutes. They might start off connected to loads of seeds/peers, but that soon dies off to 0.

THE GOOD NEWS: if you go to the website you can still download the OLDER version, which has a nice simple brushed metal interface and actually downloads!

CONCLUSION: don't download this version, it doesn't work properly and it looks bad anyway. Just download the older version which still works 100% :-)

JBREAZEALE  I too see pauses and downloads that have to be restarted. If the pause is at the start of a download I find forcing the download to start to be helpful.

Which version is more stable (should I decide to punt)?

K.C.  I'm using 4.27.2 and it works great for me. No crashes and it does what it's supposed to.

AXIOMUS  i tend not to believe the reviews or comments presented here, as most are unintelligible and full of hot air, but i must admit, the official BT client, at least 4.27.2 IS complete rubbish, as another here stated. i suppose the BT developers do not actually use the macintosh BT client they upload for others to use, otherwise this programme would be perfect. free or not free, quit wasting our time by uploading applications that do not function as advertised. and you have the audacity to ask for donations! no way. as a programmer myself, i can 'fix' issues with open sourced products, thereby tayloring the application to suit my needs, however not everyone has this luxury ... BT client 4.4.1 seems to be the most stable i have used, so i keep using it; notwithstanding, i had to do some tweaking.

ALEXIUSCA  In terms of GUI this is a significant step back from the previous version. I get the sense that under-the-hood there are some deep protocol-related improvements, but in terms of Mac GUI and integration, this is a total step back.

JEFF LERCH  I agree with below that interface needs some working on. Icons and options are not intuitive, and the icon scheme does not match the brushed metal (which, by the way is on it's way out anyway!!).

I see a lot of options in the change log, but am unable to find most of the changes through the interface. Where or how does the encryption support work (you can toy with the options a little in Azereus)? Where is it? Where are some of the other new features you mark as having added?

The windows app for this is fairly nice, but that doesn't always translate well to other OS'. I really think the design and implementation needs to be thought out a little bit more, with some extra consideration going towards the differences inherent in the operationg system and those individuals that make up it's user base.

ALBABE  This is very disappointing. Another example where Macs are ignored by major applications.

Why release something with so many bugs, and less features than the previous version?

In all fairness, BitTorrent does call this a "beta" version on their d/l page... but this app seems as badly designed and as impotent as Yahoo's new IM app.

In regards to Transmission: I've had nothing but trouble with it. I've had files that Transmission said were complete, and then Toast said they weren't audio files. Then I noticed they had no size at all.

And Transmission's forum pages were no help. No real "experts" offered any real advise... however I did get a lot of bad advise and tech-knowledge-posturing from a few know-it-alls who were obviously vacant of any real tech knowledge.
