DESCRIPTION
Uplink is akin to a more cerebral incarnation of Ambrosia's popular Escape Velocity series of games, with missions that interweave a threaded plot which is unveiled with each conquest. Only this time, you have only your intellect, hacking skills, and the computer systems you've compromised to aid you.

You play an Uplink Agent who makes a living by performing jobs for major corporations.Your tasks involve hacking into rival computer systems, stealing research data, sabotaging other companies, laundering money, erasing evidence, or framing innocent people.

You use the money you earn to upgrade your computer systems, and to buy new software and tools. As your experience level increases you find more dangerous and profitable missions become available. You can speculate on a fully working stock market (and even influence its outcome). You can modify peoples academic or criminal records. You can divert money from bank transfers into your own accounts. You can even take part in the construction of the most deadly computer virus ever designed.

SHOTGUNWEDDINGS  I paid for this game back in 2003 and have played it on and off over the years.

    Thanks for updating this Ambrosia.

Now I can play it again!

For those that haven't played it, it may not be for everyone, but it keeps us hackers at heart quit happy!

No bugs encountered with version 1.6 !

SAGGIS  This game is simply fantastic, great fun, clever and original (and I feel a bit bad-ass at the same time!)

Awesome game for those who have the urge to cause virtual destruction. And aw man, the upgrades, it certainly has the upgrades!

Thanks Ambrosia for updating to universal binary, I'll be sure to have a crack at it once I'm finished my exams ("sure I have time for just one more high security hack.......").

    Well worth a shot!

JOHN F  THIS GAME IS AWSOME! Yeah, IT's a little trivky sometimes, but hey, it keeps you on your toes, and it's just amazing what you can do when you get good enough stuff in the game.

MICHELLE  This game is fresh and exciting--the near-perfect cure for the jaded Mac gamer.

Uplink's deceptively simple, pared-down interface is simply brilliant. From the moment you open the game, you are drawn into the (slightly seedy and extremely geeky) world of Uplink. The lack of arty graphics works exceedingly well for the game's subject matter. The musical accompaniments are also well-chosen. The insistent electronica has an edge of paranoia, which lends an extra air of anxiety to your missions as you struggle to avoid being caught.

The aesthetics are paired with an equally compelling depth of gameplay. The firm that you work for provides a great deal of information, as well as a mission pool from which to choose. You can purchase new hacking tools or upgrade your machine--even negotiate with your potential employers for a higher payoff. All of these traits combine gloriously to provide a willing and even eager suspension of disbelief.

By the way, in addition to the abovementioned assets, the game has a reasonable price tag ($25--oh, come on, you know you spend $50 on video games), and Ambrosia Software provides excellent technical support.

Oh, and did I mention? The game is insanely addictive. But don't just take my word for it. At least download the demo. Unless I miss my guess, you'll be buying the full version faster than you think.
