DESCRIPTION
iPhoto Diet is a utility that helps to slim down your iPhoto library by manipulating your photos in the following ways:
- eliminate duplicate photos created internally by iPhoto or imported by yourself
- remove iPhoto's backups of rotated or modified photos
- strip the thumbnail icons of your photos
- remove thumbnail photos that have become mixed up with your high resolution photos
- identify photos which have not been added to albums
- weed out unnecessary folders and files from the library
These operations allow you to recover hard drive space and to fit more photos in your iPhoto library bound for CD or DVD burning. iPhoto Diet supports multiple iPhoto libraries, and provides basic library management features such as switching and launching libraries. In addition, iPhoto Diet can be run manually or configured to start scanning your libraries automatically at desired times.

MCMICKEY Looking for iPhoto 8 compatible iPhoto diet to pare down "runaway" duplicate JPEGS. I have thousands of photos and don't know what to do--all in a single library. Really isn't practical to do it manually. Pic thumbnails in iPhoto 8 have duplicated titles, e.g., P6260008.JPG but the thumbnail image is actually missing showing dotted outline only if using >4 thumbnails per row (5 or more across reveals the thumbnail image!) . File size shows the image exists. For the imediately adjacent thumbnail, the root title shows up, sans the '.JPG' suffix, along with a normal [visible] thumbnail. Double clicking this one brings up the full image, as it should. Double clicking the former, i.e., missing thumbnail (dotted line shows up) brings up only a blurry exclamation point in a circle. I don't get it. Afraid of doing damage to data. Suggestions?

JKRANK Looks very helpful but will have to wait for the new version that is compatible with iPhoto7. The developer says that it is already in the works though so hopefully it will be soon.

GRYPHONENT Developer’s site is down. Was wondering whether iPhoto Diet would work with iLife 08. I reckon, the app has gone the way of the Dodo. Shame.

FAWLZ USE WITH CARE!! I ran this and after sorting and then sending files to the trash, iphoto "unexpectedly quit", after checking the trashed files I noticed that some were not in the remaining library so deleting them would have lost them forever. The deleted files had file names that were NOT duplicates Also I can not now see any raw files that were in the library, all are labeled as jpegs. I have tried to re import the trashed files (after placing them in a desktop folder ) and I photo crashes intermittently. PB 1.33 10.4.8

PAULB this program broke my heart. if you're storing little movies (off your still cam) of you kids growing up... DON'T RUN IPHOTO DIET! - it doesn't recognise them and deletes them. well, it did for me.

JUST SOME GUY You should check the "Trash" folder within iPhoto itself. My understanding of iPhoto Diet is that it doesn't delete files, but rather, moves them to iPhoto's trash or to a new album it creates within iPhoto. Also, your video files may still exist in your iPhoto folder on your hard drive. Check inside the folders located at (User)>Library>iPhoto to see if there are any video files (probably ending with .AVI).

BROWNIE I was able to locate duplicates from my iphoto library of some 10000 photos because of the ease of use in iphoto diet. Also able to reduce size from 60GB because I put some slides in with TIFF. At age 75 I found the instructions clear and simple. Thanks. How can I send some money in appreciation?

HALFPINT9589 Please help. Last night I tried to work iphoto diet without reading the instructions. Stupid me, I did not read the instructions. Well for some reason I opened iphoto while the iphoto diet was doing "its thing". Well iphoto diet finished, with the results of nothing being deleted. But I reopened iphoto and no photos were there. Nothing. Nada. So after a brief heart attack, I found my beloved pictures in my hard drive. Please help, if anyone out there knows what i can do please please help me! Yes I know I am quiet an idiot for not reading the instructions.

JOHN Warning: Use with caution. Upon running this on my PowerMac G5, I lost total control of the system - no response, no cursor - even though all other apps remained running in the background. I would be very afraid to give it another shot at this point without seriously backing up my libraries in duplicate.

JOHN Updated - I almost lost my hard drive. Apparently, when I was forced to cold reboot after running iPhoto Diet, the directory structure became insanely corrupt and prevented me from booting the drive or accessing the files. Thankfully, a recent backup and DiskWarrior came to the rescue and I only lost the OS and a handful of preference files. I have over 5,000 photos in my iPhoto library and I have not been able to determine if iPhoto Diet was a catalyst for this almost disasterous event, but I HIGHLY recommend that you backup your system (and verify the backup) before running this on your system.

BJOEHY Unfortunatelly, this version (unlike the previous) can't handle some Central European characters. I was used to maintain my 8000+ photo library, but now whenever it finds a special CE character in the original photo file name, it says "APPLE SCRIPT ERROR: Can't make alias "No-good's:Users:Shared:iPhoto Library:2001:11:27:vyjednavac?i.jpg" into type Unicode text. (-1700)" and stops working. :-(

KAZ Same here. Even characters like "é" (hopefully will macupdate be better and let me post such a crazy character) are not accepted. café.jpg crash it, thus...

MARTIN FUHRER iPhoto Diet 3.0.8 addresses some Unicode character conversion issues. These actually appear to be bugs in Apple's Unicode implementation in Applescript, but I have added some workarounds that will hopefully take care of the issue for now.
