DESCRIPTION

fennel DVDManager (aka fsDM) is our next-generation DVD manager (sic) for Mac OS X. With its clean interface, available in 15 languages, it makes maintaining your DVD library as easy as Macintosh!

  • Retrieve and Update your DVDs' details through online sites
  • or Add and Edit them manually, yet *quickly* (just the core details!)
  • Manage their life when lent to friends thanks to your Address Book
  • Create box sets+wish list easily, and manage them intuitively
  • Export a complete list of your DVD library, etc.

Quick, Simple, Easy and Fun :) ! It's time to manage the workflow of your DVDs with Style!

WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.8 (63):

Introduction

  • More than happy to declare fennel DVDManager 100% freeware... and to present its commercial twin brother: fennel DVDManager Pro!
Features
  • Now allows you to filter DVDs by genre.
  • Qualified for Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.7.
Enhancements
  • (63) Now retrieves more than one author for Amazon entries with multiple authors (i.e. directors, artists, etc.).
  • (63) Similarly to our Rate global and contextual menus, the Rate toolbar item now also displays the state of the current selection.
  • (62) Retrieve: When searching Amazon websources, no mentions of progress were displayed; this now behaves similarly to DVDFr and IMDb.
  • (62) Streamlined our contextual menu by removing the (rather inappropriate) global Add, Filter, and Search options.
  • Placeholders for star-styled ratings in the Details pane are now displayed as "little dots" when in Edit modes.
  • The Search toolbar item is horizontally-stretchable.
  • (62) Plus some minor menu reorganization, with some more refinements in our Dutch, French, German, and Swedish localizations.
Fixes
  • (63) Takes into account the recent changes that occurred on IMDb websources.
  • (62) On Leopard, the selected items--and not the clicked item--were the target of any contextual action; from now on, selections should behave like on Tiger.
  • Fixed a regression introduced in v1.7.9 in which manipulating completed contacts proposed in the Manage sheet could lead to a crash.
  • When submitting changes in an Edit session, some fields (sporting valid values) could have been saved even if some invalid values were reported; it's fixed now, which means that no change is saved until *all* the fields feature some valid values.
  • Fixed some issues in our CSV-based Import action where some field mappings weren't respected.
  • Revolved an issue in Edit mode in which the red labeling of fields sporting an invalid value wasn't appropriately reverted to black.
  • Fixed the situation where, the library sorted in descending order with some box sets expanded, adding a DVD would not end editing the just-created item.
  • Corrected some more memory leaks related to our Import action.
For Your Information
  • We're aware of missing bits in some languages, and are working on completing them ASAP thanks to our localizers; we'll push newer builds through Software Update as they become available, hopefully in the very near future. Thanks for your understanding in the meantime...

REQUIREMENTS
  • Mac OS X Tiger v10.4 or later, Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.7 recommended.
  • A connection to the Internet is highly recommended (fees may apply).

DJRUMPY  Excellent piece of software. I don't require all sorts of bells and whistles that provide me with little/no value. I just need a list of titles, genre, rating, and 'loaned to' information. This app fits the bill perfectly, and it let me import my old CSV file with no muss or fuss! It does have internet lookup if you need that sort of thing, and it seems to work flawlessly as well.

The interface is clean and easy to use, which I wasn't finding browsing most of the other free offerings. I'm grateful I stumbled on this one!

Two Thumbs Up ;)

MACUPDATE ADMIN  And the developer submitted this most recent update to MacUpdate as being freeware, so... go figure.

I assume it is uncrippled software.

FENNELSOFTWARE  Dear fsDM Users,Through this alert bulletin, we'd like to let you know that we're now aware of problems re the retrieval of DVD details through Amazon-based Web sources. We'd also like to tell you that we've already started investigating what could be the cause of such an issue, and we'll try to keep you informed of our progress towards solving it. Be assured we'll do our best to get your beloved DVD manager back and running as expected as soon as possible. But we don't ignore the possibility that those Web sources may be temporarily removed from fsDM if a new implementation of those retrieval mechanisms was going to be needed…We're really sorry for the inconvenience, and we'd like to thank you all for your patience and understanding in the meantime.— The Team(Credit goes to Graham E. for reporting this alert to us.)

FENNELSOFTWARE  Johnny, we've got a very good news for you: if you were using Excel for keeping your DVD library up-to-date, you simply have to export your data in CSV format. Then, from within fennel DVDManager, just invoke the "File > Import DVD Library…" menu item and then choose to import this .csv file. In a couple of seconds, you'll get your data back and will be ready to use our product instead to manage the workflow of your DVDs :) ! (Note: This CSV-based import feature is available since our very first version…) In case of any issue, don't hesitate to contact us directly, we'll be happy to help you in this process. Cheers.

FENNEL SOFTWARE  Or "A tutorial to get your DVD library back once on Mac OS X v10.4":* If you chose to upgrade from Mac OS X "Panther" (or "Jaguar"), you shouldn't have anything to do: your user's account should be preserved, your data still available; you'd only have to launch (and enjoy using) fennel DVDManager under Tiger.* If you chose to clean install Mac OS X "Tiger" (i.e., through some formatting of your startup volume), be sure you've backup-ed your entire "DVDManager" folder (which is located in your user's account "Library" folder) before running this erasing installation process: you can either use Finder's File > Create Archive of "DVDManager" menu item (good), or our new File > Export DVD Library to Desktop action from fsDM v1.6 (recommended).Once under Tiger, you'd only have to expand this .zip archive into your new user's account "Library" folder, for fennel DVDManager to transparently load your data back on its next launch.Don't hesitate to contact us directly for any question... We wish you the smartest transition to Tiger ;) !

FENNEL SOFTWARE  Regarding this recent Mac OS X v10.3.9 issue, one can also try the simpler trick which consists in updating the prebinding.

To do that, simply execute the following command in a Terminal:

sudo update_prebinding -root / -force

This process may take many minutes to fulfill completely; but it may also avoid to some of you the heavyweight re-installation of Apple's Security Update 2005-002 (even if the solution we prefer…) Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to contact us directly for any question/problem.

FENNEL SOFTWARE  With the just released Mac OS X v10.3.9, some are experiencing some issue while launching fennel DVDManager :( ! So here's a tip to fix your environment: simply reinstall Apple's Security Update 2005-002 (Download — 16.4 MB), and everything should be working just fine again…
