ANONYMOUS Yes, we use it for live ingest of 8 sources in 1080i/29.97. Using a KONA2 and VirtualVTR, it works quite well. It also is editable in FinalCutPro. Your AGP card has got to be a fairly powerful one though and turn off 3D (if an ATI card).

DESTERWALLABOO Not sure why you have to have a powerful AGP card or have 3D turned off to use SheerVideo Pro... that doesn't make any sense at all! Anyway, with that said, we use this codec daily in our regular workflow. We rarely render out in any other codec except for final delivery. Keeping animation files and such in a smaller, pristine lossless format is priceless. When we changed over to Sheer from using Animation codec we literally saved over 2TB of file size by simply converting our existing Animation codec files to Sheer. Also, Sheer supports 10-bit color space... something Animation doesn't support.

ANONYMOUS Come on BitJazz, you guys used to have this program really together...now I don't know what I've got or what you are doing... You are watering down your own progress with these dumb updates...make a real jump in progress then release an update...it's boring to try to follow all these tiny adjustments

GUY GREMBER i've bought it 8 months ago and i've thrased the whole stuff. it works only for "archive" purpose. the quicktime file encoded with the sheer codec can't b exported to mpeg-2 via quicktime 6.5 or compressor - quite embarrassing if you work on a DVD project like me. not to mention some artifacts compression if you have 1 mn video lenght animation and the numerous updates.

ANONYMOUS Very little is updated. That's just my guess but releasing an endless stream of "update-ettes," is just one unethical way to ensure that everyone knows about the product that's being hawked. It's essentially free advertising. A tweak here a tweak there, might take five minutes and then resubmit it for upload.

STEVE CASE This is getting tiresome. Constant demo releases with no change list. Is the codec actually changing or do you just expire your demo's frequently? To me, you are gaming MacUpdate to get frequent exposure for a product that is not actually updated. I don't like that.

MATAM. Keep in mind that it can't be compared to Indeo or DivX, as they're not editable. This one is made for very high quality demands, and big bandwith, like Pixlet. Not to forgot that it's not aimed for the large public like the 3ivX, DivX and so on, but for pro's. And it's loseless codec... so a little like the PNG's for video ;)

ANONYMOUS I would steer clear of exotic codecs... anyone remember Indeo? Intel developed it, then sold it off to a company that doesn't produce it for the Mac any more. If you want to run Indeo video on a Mac now you have to run the old OS 9 Quicktime player under Classic. It's bad enough keeping up with DivX and 3ivX and all the variants. Not to mention that even on my G3/400 I get frame drops because it's too CPU-intensive. I don't care if it takes more space, the old MPEG codecs work on any platform and don't use up a lot of CPU power... and disk is getting cheaper all the time.

ANONYMOUS I don't think the previous anonymous poster had much of a clue what he was talking about. This is a relatively esoteric codec, but then it's for a relatively esoteric application, namely the archiving and transfer of high-speed, full-resolution, uncompressed video for use in editing environments. You're not likely to ever see consumer content distributed in this format, so I wouldn't worry too much about it "disappearing". If you value being able to deliver 18Mb/sec video quality at half that rate without any other compromise, use this codec. If you're a script-kiddie DVD-ripper, look elsewhere.

ANONYMOUS If it's advertised on a consumer site like MacUpdate then the ad copy needs to be a little more specific about what the product actually is... particularly given the current intellectual property environment where companies are using every loophole they can to lock information up and keep it from ever reverting to the public domain, and the codec wars are part of that strategy.

MATT Sheer Video is a solid video codec which has true lossless encoding and doubles the performance of disk access while halfing the space of video files in the process (typically). The only problem is that the developer is making constant "stealth" updates to this codec but does not share with end-users on the software update sites (nor its own web page) exactly what the changes are from version to version. There are frequently only a day to several days between releases. Overly frequent updates with no "changelog" or other update history to be found is a source of user Update Fatigue.

JOHNNY_DAVIS Don't like the fact that the demo expires. What happens if you convert all your important vids and the company goes out of business? Your vids encoded with this proprietary codec will be lost!

DESTERWALLABOO You can always playback even if the demo expires... you just will not be able to encode anymore. This is the best codec I've used for post-production animation/fx bar none.
