DESCRIPTION
DS_Store Cleaner is a handy little tool for users who transfer files between platforms (Mac OS X to Linux/Windows), or those who create CDs. There are two version, one specifically for Mac OS X, the other for Linux and Windows. The Mac version is to clean up .DS_Store files before buring a cd or transferring files. The other versions are in case the files have already been transferred.

LOW END DAN  Simple, clever, and quick!

I still use Claris Home Page (last updated in 1997) in Classic Mode to edit and upload pages for lowendmac.com. Since I started using Mac OS X, those uploads have included .DS_Store files - these tell OS X the size, location, and other preferences for displaying a folder. These are completely unnecessary on the server, but Home Page doesn't know to ignore them.

Using DS_Store Cleaner is simplicity itself. Launch the program, drag your folder to the window it creates, and it will very quickly remove all of the .DS_Store files in that folder and every subfolder within it.

I just ran it on my current directory, and it removed well over 100 .DS_Store files and reduced my site "framework" file by 6K - from 130K to 124K.

This app does one thing - and does it very well. Recommended.

ANONYMOUS  App crashes if you put it any lower (subfolders) than the main application folder or desktop. Works fine in either of those two places. A nicer icon might be in order too !

ANONYMOUS  Open the directory you want to work on in Finder.

In the Finder searchbox type ".DS_Store" and hit return.

Once it's finished searching, hit "Command A" to select them all.

    Drag them to Trash.

    Over on the UNIX/Linux side:

Change directory to the directory you want to clean.

Type "find . -name .DS_Store -exec rm '{}' ';'" (the quotes are required) and hit return.

ANONYMOUS  DS_Store files store the information how the finder window was looking like when you last opened it (f.e. list view, icon view a.s.o.). So if you delete them, all what happens is that the next time you open that folder it will be presented whith the Finder default settings.

ANONYMOUS  I dont think it's fair to poorly rate the product just because there's a easy script alternative. It's not like he's charging for it, ya know.
