DESCRIPTION
GnuPG... Gnu Privacy Guard is, after a fashion, the Mac OS X port of GnuPG, licensed under the GNU GPL. The aims of the project are to make GnuPG easy to install, develop a framework to make it easy for other developers to incorporate GnuPG functionality into their applications, write services to allow for the use of GnuPG functions in most Cocoa applications, and write a Mac GPG Keys type application so that you no longer have to go to the commandline to manage your keys.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.0.12:
  • Core upgraded to GnuPG v2.0.12 and libksba 1.0.6:
  • GPGSM now always lists ephemeral certificates if specified by fingerprint or keygrip.
  • New command "KEYINFO" for GPG_AGENT. GPGSM now also returns information about smartcards.
  • Made sure not to leak file descriptors if running gpg-agent with a command. Restore the signal mask to solve a problem in Mono.
  • Changed order of the confirmation questions for root certificates and store negative answers in trustlist.txt.
  • Better synchronization of concurrent smartcard sessions.
  • Support 2048 bit OpenPGP cards.
  • Support Telesec Netkey 3 cards.
  • The gpg-protect-tool now uses gpg-agent via libassuan. Under Windows the Pinentry will now be put into the foreground.
  • Changed code to avoid a possible Mac OS X system freeze.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4 or later.

DOM21  Can you use GnuPGP to encrypt something you write in TextEdit, copy/paste the encrypted text into a Yahoo email and the recipient decrypt it on his end (as with P.Z's PGP)? If you can I haven't been able to figure out how.

GEMIGENE  Wanted to try but...

Phil Zimmermann "invented" PGP quite a few years ago and GnuPG will be celebrating their 11th anniversary soon. I wonder why in this age of "User Friendly, ready to run out of the box" software, there are still programs that demand quite a bit of technical expertise to install and run (command line or third-party interfaces to fill in the gap) and are still problematic to use. When are those people are going to come out of the "dark ages"?

I posted my original question on 4 forums to get as much feedback as possible from GnuPG users but to no avail. I assume that it isn't a very popular program.

DOM21  Can you use this as is, out of the box, to encrypt as you can with PGP? Or is this only something for developers to work with?

HOLYPOLY  Here's a graphical interface to GnuPG:

http://www.tomsci.com/gpgtools/

and you'll probably also want one of these scripts, to make GnuPG work with your favourite mail client (scroll down the page):

ROBERT  This package (GnuPG) is the main program, and--strictly speaking--all you need to use GnuPG encryption.

However, unless you work entirely in the command-line environment or are very fond of copy-and-paste, you'll like some additional software that will plug GnuPG into your GUI apps.

(PGP would release all this sort of stuff themselves as an integrated package, whereas with GnuPG you pick and choose the pieces you need.)

You'll likely want the GUI apps that the MacGPG project supplies.

Then you'll likely want a plug-in for your mail application:

e.g. If you use Mail.app, you'll also want GPGMail. If you use Thunderbird or SeaMonkey, you'll want Enigmail.

There's likely a plug-in for your app.

[The software that is only of concern to developers is GPGME.]

GRIFF IN FAIRBANKS  Because this package is intended for programmers and system administrators, not end users.

This is a building block on which programmers can build applications/plug-ins for end users such as yourself.
