Word Counter is an application that performs a word count and a character count, but it can do much more. It can be used independently or in conjunction with other applications such as TextEdit, Microsoft Word, Pages, TextWrangler, and others.
Text can be typed, pasted, or dragged into the window. Word Counter can automatically update the count based on a user-defined time interval. It can show the progress achieved towards a set goal for the total number of words and characters. It also can perform bulk counts on multiple files and folders simply by dropping them onto the window. Word Counter can count the number of times a particular word appears in a document. It can even create a sortable summary table of all words in the document, with the number of times each word appears and the length of each word.
Word Counter can handle various file types including plain text (txt, text), rich text (rtf, rtfd), Hypertext Markup Language (htm, html), Microsoft Word (doc), Microsoft Word XML (wordml), Apple's web archive (webarchive), the Adobe Portable Document Format (pdf), and others. This program may be useful for writing a manuscript or an abstract with a strict limit on the number of words or characters allowed.

- Added support for Mori (a digital notebook application)
- Significant speed increases for word and character counts, especially for large files
- Ongoing feedback for file counts has now been removed due to speed increases
- Significant speed increases for frequency counts
- Significant speed increases for exporting multiple file counts and frequency counts to a file
- Improved printing of multiple file counts and frequency counts
- Minor interface enhancements
- Fixed an error ["Can't make character id 0 into type reference. (-1700)"] that occurred when performing a frequency count in OS X 10.4

PI-314 Many thanks for this clever, simple, and helpful application. Used with TextEdit, it will allow me not to buy MS Office, as I only used Word to write articles without layout... but I needed absolutely a powerful word counter. Here it is ! Icing on the cake, the developer is so kind and responsive. Congratulations from France

It shows an error message - "NSReceiverEvaluationScriptError: 4 (1)" - on whatever you click. You can't even quit the application by clicking Quit in the menu bar or C+Q. iMac Intel 10.4.11

DAVID HANAUER Word Counter cannot open Pages documents directly. As stated in the "What's New" section, Word Counter work with the Pages application itself. So if you have both Word Counter open and Pages open, Word Counter should be able to count the text in the Pages document. You must set it to work with Pages in the Word Counter preferences and then make sure the floating counter window is active. If you still have problems I would suggest e-mailing me and I can try to help you.

EL-CRAVITO Although it is mentioed as one of the new features of this version, Word Counter 2.4 still does not work with Pages files. At least is does not in my Intel-based iMac, running Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.9). Every time I tried, I got an "Errors" window and the information "Word Counter was not able to open the following files:", follwed by the files' paths. | |
