DESCRIPTION
Annoyed at the Control Key? "Look Mom, No Hands!" lets you open contextual menus by just holding the mouse button, keeping your other hand free for the coffee cup.
With this small application (it's a prefpane), you no longer have to press Ctrl to open the contextual menus. Click on an item on the desktop and keep holding down the mouse button. After some time, the standard contextual menus will pop up, including any Contextual Menu Manager plug-ins you have installed.

KNYON Jumping to the conclusion that this program is a 'waste' because one could buy a cheap multi-button mouse for the same price is narrow minded. There are many people who enjoy using one-button mice and have no easy way of accessing contextual menus. It is true that Old Jewel Software's One Finger Snap (http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/18941) does the same thing for a lower price, but I've never known competition to maim anyone. I suggest to the author of Look Mom, No Hands to add more features (audio feedback maybe?) and possibly a more competitive price. For what Look Mom, No Hands does, it does pretty well. And I totally dig the name. :)

SZABESZ Good way to get RSI... Buy a 3 button mouse instead, you get an extra button and a scrollwheel too. Cheapest and the best is the Hama 3 button mouse (with the glowing blue scrollwheel).

APIKOROS I'm pleased to say that the author immediately remedied all the flaws I cited in my previous review, and that the software now functions excellently. I await revisions that will implement it in Mail, TextEdit, etc. (I am less pleased by comments such as those by "Anonymous" below, because they raise once again the tiresome old issue of one-button vs. multi-button mice, but especially because they are written in an insultingly waspish tone. Such behavior is to be expected, I suppose, from someone of limited literacy who doesn't know when to capitalize proper nouns or how to spell "wasted.")

ANONYMOUS Why not put the money towards a 3 button mouse? I have used logitech and miscrosoft mice "Seamlessly" for years without this waste of system resources and I can still hold my coffee in one hand while accessing the contextual menus (What else is the right button for?) This is a pointless exercise in waisting money!!

APIKOROS By the way, 2 stars is generous. And yes, the problems went away as soon as I turned off the pref pane. They returned as soon as I re-activated it, so it's now off permanently unless the author can fix it.

APIKOROS I paid for this... and I regret it. In OS 10.4.2 on a 20" rev. B G5 iMac, it causes these problems: - After about 5 minutes, the screen goes black, then on again, then off and on, and off and on-- every half second, as if it were trying to sleep, but being immediately awakened by some running process. - Apps launch behind the active window, instead of in front. - The Dashboard "hot corner" no longer functions. The author says, "It works great in the Finder and in Safari... Also in iPhoto. ... But you're right that it doesn't work /everywhere/; that would be great and I hope to get other apps working as seamlessly as in these two apps." "Seamlessly" is not the best choice of words.

I bought a macally ICE Mini mouse maybe two months ago for my new PB, two buttons and a scrollwheel... $15. This software needs to be priced significantly lower, maybe $6 or less.

ANDREAS PIZSA That posting came later than I had expected :) See... it's not meant as a replacement. Even if you have a Mighty Mouse - like I do - clicking-and-holding is just very convenient. It feels good; it's addictive. If you use Safari, click, hold and open pages in a new window. Also on PowerBooks it's really, really handy. Of course, YMMV. | |

U BETCHA Well, that is exactly what I do with my ICE Mini, I 'right-click' and hold for the contextual menus... and it just works, no matter what app I happen to be using at the time.
