PNORMAN  As far as I can determine, the developer of iClip manages MacHeist and develops iPhone apps at taptaptap, so he hasn't fallen off the planet; he just hasn't done any obvious work on iClip in almost 3 years.

With any luck, he will update iClip 4.0 with Snow leopard support. In just a few minutes trying to use iClip on Snow Leopard I had these issues:

- serial number entry dialog: can't paste serial number

- serial number entry dialog: clicking 'ok' button does nothing (pressing return on keyboard worked)

- preferences: can't tick radial buttons or tickboxes or move sliders or interact in ANY way (eg: 'automatically open iclip when you log in')

Clearly an update is required. I'm hoping it happens soon but for what MUST be obvious reasons, I'm not holding my breath.

MARKHUSS  Since Snow Leopard update, I clips has been rendered useless for me. If freezes on my screen and won't budge and since it doesn't show up in the preference panel or in the force quit section, I have to reboot to have it removed. I wrote the developer, here was the response:

This is a Snow Leopard issue. Other apps are having the same problem. We don't have a solution at this time. Keep an eye out for Snow Leopard updates. This might be a bug that Apple will fix.

DON GMT  Sounds a bit strange to me - iClip hasn't been updated for years, the iClip Blog has *one* entry (the starting entry) ... To me it sounds like the developer lost his interest in iClip already long time ago, and that would be a pitty, since it was *such* a good helper!!! I still hope there's hope ...

SWEETBLUE  iClip 4 was billed and pushed two years ago as a very progressive, innovative piece of software with a first-rate GUI. That was two years ago. And Computer Years are like Double-Dog Years. Just as a bench mark, the last update to this program was the same month as Steve Jobs' iPhone keynote address. Moreover, like all X.0 software I've ever encountered, iClip 4 possessed several bugs in need of attention. Waaaay back then.

In the two years since -- NOTHING. Not even a minor tweak to fix even one bug. Zero. Zilch. Nathan. Not even the theme to THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY. Silencio.

Part of investing in a piece of software is investing in the DEVELOPMENT of the software. Software is not a static product; it's an evolving, fluid product. Apple and Adobe are leading examples: minor updates fix bugs, implement improved functionality and often simply keep the software fresh. Major updates cost money, justified ostensibly because a) it's the next-best thing and b) the customer trusts the software company to keep the software in repair.

Thus, aside from iClip 4's issues with loading slowly, copying slowly, pasting slowly, etc., it's fallen woefully behind the very platform it's supposed to compliment. A little OSX update known as LEOPARD since implemented a nifty desktop management feature called Spaces. Guess what -- old man river iClip 4 doesn't work with Spaces. How could it? Its Developer(s) left the building with Elvis. Seriously, the developer even lists part of "new features" as being a Universal Binary. That's like rocking your 3rd Grade Class Photo as your profile pic on FaceBook.

I understand the fact that people "move on" in life; perhaps the developer(s) bounced to Bali and mix Mai Tais for a living now. Maybe they're supercool CIA ops. Whatever their new bag, the moral (yeah, I said it) thing to do is --

Stop charging for a product that you are no longer maintaining. Because buying software ain't like buying a cheeseburger.

GRUMPYTICO  This is by far, one of the best reviews I have ever read on MacUpdate. Your points are so damn valid, they are scary ;) Thanks for taking the time to write your opinion, I think you are right on target.

SWEETBLUE  @CSABORIO,

Thanks for the thanks. Now let's just hope that the developer, by some miracle, grows ears.

CASTLE ROSE  I have been using this product since v3. True there were a few bugs in v3. Version 4 has been ROCK SOLID. I haven't had a single problem with it since the day it cam out. I'm Running OS 10.4.11 so maybe there are bugs with Leopard. With Tiger there has been no need for an update at all.

BORUCH  Don't buy this application as it appears to have been abandoned by the developer who has moved on to bigger and more prosperous endeavors (macheist and other projects). It's very buggy! No updates in almost a year which has forced me to cease using the application. I'm rather upset considering that I paid to update from the previous edition of this software and all I get in the end is nothing :(

ILIKETRASH  This has been a damn fine piece of software and I'm sorry to read that it is abandoned.

Since it is abandoned, the developer has a moral obligation to stop selling it.

HAL0THANE  "johnred", the developer, has said in a MacHeist forum that he considers iClip "abandonware" and has no intention to update it in the future, despite its (in my opinion) superiority over other clipboard-management apps.

Also, iClip 4 appears to be completely unusable on *FRESH* installs of Snow Leopard. If you have have done an upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard, iClip will appear to be usable (according to reports) except that it will be impossible to set preferences. Those who are very familiar with and comfortable with the Property List Editor could, conceivably, change preferences in such a way and hack a working copy of iClip.

Lastly, for the hackers: Remember that recent rulings affect the enforcement of the DMCA over abandoned copyrighted works, and the reverse engineering of said works could be completely legal -- or illegal -- depending on the day of the week and whether the people making the rules are wearing boxers, briefs, or lacy panties. (But if you get it working, be sure to drop me a message!)

RUFTY TUFTY  I agree with the negative reviews below. This was a decent product, and would be if the developer would maintain it and fix the bugs.

However, I've had the same crash bug since I paid for it a year ago, have contacted the developer several times, and he's shown no real interest in fixing it. Apparently there are other unfixed bugs (no update since the initial 4.0 release).

At this point, I've stop using iClip, consider the $29 a loss, and would never buy another product from this developer.

ZOIDBERG  Absolutely loved this program when I first got it -- made my workday all-around easier. Happily paid the shareware fee.

I'd give it five stars under Tiger and zero under Leopard. It just won't work under Leopard (currently running 10.5.3 as I write this).

What's worse, no updates to the program seem to be forthcoming (the last update was January 2007), and no updates of the company website since around that time. Even their blog is a single entry that just says "TEST" on January 2, 2007.

Oh, well. I'll keep looking for a replacement.

BOBZOZUS  I am troubled by your comments. I am sorry that you are having so much difficulty getting IClips to work under Leopard- and have not had success in getting Inventive Customer support to help you out. Unfortunately, I can not say too much concerning how IClips does or doesn't work in Leopard. However, I have had good success in contacting their customer support. I have had responsive communication with Mr. Mike Larry at email address: info2007@inventive.us. Perhaps if you tell him of your difficulties- and desire to have IClips work since it broke when you upgraded to Leopard- he can help facilitate support concerning your problem. Best of Luck- Bob

JOSHP  I don't believe that this program is bug free for one second. After five minutes of playing with it, I notice that the program often becomes unresponsive and pops up a window telling me it is waiting on Finder, Firefox, or whatever. Also, the menubar icon does not always show/hide the program on first click.

HARRISTYPE  iClip is very pretty. However, in terms of being updated (last update was January of 2007), and current features, iClip has been passed by by PTHPasteboard Pro and iClipboard. I have to admit with another reviewer here that it appears to be abandonware.

MUSICLC  iclip 4 appears to be dead software. I would suggest anyone considering this based on reviews don't buy it. I used version 3 and 4 was supposed to be a big improvement, but was a big dissapointment. I have been unable to use it without problems, and my latest attempt quits before starting. I checked the site, and it doesn't seem to have changed in quite a while.
