DESCRIPTION

Spell Catcher X is the powerful writing tool preferred by educators, students, writers, bloggers - anyone who writes on their Macintosh. It's the all-in-one writing solution for those who need standardized custom dictionaries for use in all their applications, those that write in multiple languages, and anyone that simply wants to be a faster, more effective writer. Use it in Mac OS X applications such as email, web browsers, instant messaging, Microsoft Word and other word processors, graphics programs such as Adobe Photoshop, video and movie programs, databases, spreadsheets and more!

Spell Catcher X's all-in-one-product features include:
  • Available-everywhere as-you-type (interactive) and after-you've-typed-it (batch) spell checking. Fully integrated with the standard Mac OS X Spelling Panel.
  • Comprehensive spelling dictionaries for 14 different languages, with thesaurus look ups in 10 languages. Nine spelling languages and 10 thesaurus databases are included for free!
  • Powerful, fast, searchable, state-of-the-art shorthand expansions. Date and time shorthands that are infinitely configurable.
  • Two different English-language thesaurus databases available - the "right word" is just a few keystrokes away.
  • U.S. English dictionary with definitions.
  • If you can't find it in the thesaurus or dictionary definitions, you'll find it on the Internet using Spell Catcher's integrated dictionary server support.
  • Spell Catcher X's completion feature finishes what you're typing for you. Not just dictionary words are offered as completions, but shorthands, your personal learned words, thesaurus synonyms, and (saving the best for last), names, email addresses, phone numbers and address information from your Address Book! With Spell Catcher X's Address Book completions, your Address Book is truly available everywhere.
  • Spell Catcher X's Ghostwriter offers you "Safety When You Haven't Saved." Ghostwriter saves what you type while you type it, making it possible to recover your work after a crash or other similar disaster. Because it's built on top of an interactive writing tool, Ghostwriter keeps an incredibly accurate, complete, and easy-to-recover account of what you've written.
  • Customizable text manipulation tools let you "Modify Selections" of text in many different ways. Clean up badly-formatted email messages, strip excess white space and other characters, make paragraphs out of text with returns at the end of every line. Create your own macros from the basic functions that are included with Spell Catcher X.
  • Tailor the way Spell Catcher works to the way you and the applications you use work. Almost every preference can be set on a per-application basis.

CYBORG9  Purchased Spell catcher after trying it out. Worked well for a while. But found that Spell Catcher's alerts functions do not work most of the time on my machine. The developer has no explanation nor a fix. So Spell Catcher is essentially useless to me.

OS 10.5 on a MacBook Pro Intel core 2 duo.

If Spell Catcher works for you, go for it. It's really very good.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  Ok. Here there is a Trial that doesn't let me try anything. All the Features on the Dock menu are restricted. The same popup keeps repeating that 'feature not available when Spell Catcher is unlicensed'. This is not a trial. It is a crippled version.

So i'm supposed to buy a product to see if it fits my needs.

Bah!

DANIEL JOMPHE  If your demo doesn't allow you to really try the software, it's because, when you first installed it, you selected "run unlicensed" instead of "try for 14 days".

OVE  Languages available include Danish and Swedish. If my native Norwegian (the third major language of Scandinavia) had been there, too, I would have grabbed this program several years ago. I once mailed the developer about this; unfortunately he could not promise there would ever be any Norwegian language support. Please, "Look to Norway" (Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1942). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Look_to_Norway

OVE  Thank you very much! I just purchased the application on MacZot (50% off today) and will shortly buy the Norwegian add-on dictionary and start working. Thanks again.

MACSAILOR  A great application has become even better with this new version.

I can not recommend it enough. It's absolutly one of my favourites among the applications on my MacBook Pro.

ESPIRIDION  Worthy update to a great program. This version comes with a variety of improvements and added features that can be found here:

http://www.rainmakerinc.com/products/spellcatcherx/whatsnew10_3.html

Support is excellent, and the upgrade fee is very reasonable.

For those unfamiliar with the program, in addition to being a spell checker, it can also be used to expand frequently used text, get text statistics (e.g., Fog Index and Flesch-Kincaid), manipulate text (e.g., changing case, removing multiple spaces, etc.), use Macros, and more.

DirectCorrect is an important new feature. It may not work with all applications, and with some it may not be evident that it works. For example, it may appear that it's no possible to turn it on with a specific application, but when the interface has a field that supports DirectCorrect -like when typing this review or posting on a forum- it becomes possible to turn it on. It pays to read about its features and experiment with it.

RWEBBER  You may try the application without fear of "inability to roll back to the previous application." The website clearly states that updating the license during trial will not prevent returning to the previous version. The post below me is wrong on this.

FLASH1296  Heed UTOBIA'S words.

With that said -- If you can afford the $40, this is a really great application.

LARAINE  Yes, $40 IS rather a lot for a utility program. But it sounds, from the comments here, that it might be worth it, so I'm going to give it a whirl. I'm driven round the bend by Mariner Write's inexcusably poor International English dictionary. And Dreamweaver 8 doesn't even HAVE one! (Unbelievable.) This (Spell Catcher) is one of those things that Mac users shouldn't have to buy, just as they shouldn't have to buy other utilities like Keyboard Maestro. I HATE that dock. I want to be able to use keyboard shortcuts to open or switch applications. It's so slow and inefficient having to go to the dock. Unfortunately, even Keyboard Maestro won't let me get rid of the dock altogether the way Now Utilities and (as it later became) Action Utilities did with their similar, but plainer, docks. I appreciate how Apple makes its computers so user friendly you'd have to be an idiot not to be able to teach yourself how to use and how to look after one, but there comes a time when Mac users are no longer beginners and want to configure their Macs to suit the way they work. Sorry for the rant. I'll shut up now. *G*

UTOBIA  Be forewarned: SC 10.3 not a free upgrade and installation may limit your ability to roll back to a previous version.

JOI  This is one of the first programs I purchased when I first bought my eMac in 2005. It works great and is simple to use.

I place my cursor in this review box... then I just right click on the try icon, select check all and everything is copied to its little edit window. Hit the replace button to replace misspelled words, and then the paste button. Simple...

THEC13  This is a good program and one I would have one time considered great; one that I would recommend to fellow Mac users. The problem is I'd like to see some updates every now and then to show there is an interest in making it better or even a Leopard update would be nice. Until they pay more attention to updating their product, I would recommend looking for an alternative.
