DESCRIPTION
Tidy Up! is a complete duplicate finder and disk tidiness utility.

Here are a few Tidy Up! features:

  • With Tidy Up! you can search for duplicate files and packages; by the owner application, content, type, creator, extension, time modified, time created, name, label, visibility and date/age. You can also search by the tag, duration and bit installments of MP3 and AAC sound files and EXIF metadata, search the contents of the iPhoto, Aperture, iTunes, iPod databases and Mail mailboxes, and synchronize deletions with iPhoto, Mail and iTunes.
  • Tidy Up! allows you to search for duplicate folders; by name, date modified, date created, label visibility, empty folders, their contents and more.
  • Tidy Up! is fast, it doesn't index the scanned volumes, so you don't waste additional precious space. With its multitasking capability, you can do more searches at a time and take advantage of the latest Macintosh computers and operating systems.
  • Tidy Up! comes with a search mode called Basic Mode*, which includes more than 90 pre-defined searches. For a customized strategy, you can opt for Strategy Wizard, which based on your choices creates the appropriate criteria with which to search for duplicates and a new "Smart Basket" that will contain the items to be removed, or the manual method, the most customized method offered.
  • TTidy Up! has a security system that assures you will keep at least one file of the duplicate group on your disk, the ability to undo copied and moved items and the ability to restore trashed items as long as the trash is not emptied, even after a restart of the computer.
  • Tidy Up! offers a full-size preview of the most commonly used files such as: audio, media, text, pdf, graphics, fonts and more... and Quick Look like in the Finder (only from OS X 10.5).
  • One of the most interesting features of Tidy Up! is the capability to separate, for quick and easy organization, found items using custom criteria via "Smart Baskets." It also includes the possibility to choose, from the items belonging to the supported applications, a specific album , playlist or mailbox.
  • Tidy Up! allows you to trash, move, replace the moved and trashed items with aliases or simbolic links, burn, assign colored Finder labels and export into html and text files all found items.
  • Tidy Up! is fully customizable and allows you to create your preferred workspace.

CYBORG9  Personally, I don't care about the icon design; what annoys me is that Tidy Up is not user friendly or intuitive..... Niether the quick start guide nor manual made things easier or clearer for me.

A video tutorial would be most helpful.

NICMART  I downloaded TidyUp and scanned two drives with important files. It found about 11,000 duplicates very rapidly. But TidyUp is so unclear that I wasn't about delete anything. The interface needs a major rewrite to make it crystal clear.

NARROWNECK  I couldn't believe my luck finding this application. But I find I am not able to understand the interface to achieve what I want. Which is:

What images in location A are also in location B?

It tells me duplicate within A and within B but not between the two!

It finds JPG files when all images are selected but not when JPEG is selected!

Setting up duplicates in the same location are not detected by Selecting Images, All kinds in Basic Mode. Selecting the folder and Search. Nothing found even though the selected folder has two folders containing duplicate JPG files! Hmm What did I do wrong there? Do the same with Other files and packages, All file types and they duplicate JPG files are found.

Repeat that selecting two volumes with known duplicates between them but not within them and no items are found.

I've experimented for an hour or so with strategies but still no success. The application is obviously very powerful and I hope to grasp it eventually. I have got some results but I'm unconfident why. JPEG filter does not allow JPG files for example.

For now though I'm unable to achieve what I want. So I will not buy until I have.

DONPERREAULT  Version 2.0 is more confusing than ever and the interface is horrible. Upgrade is $20.00 from version 1., I think the upgrade is expensive for loyal users of Tidy Up 1. Good thing I don't see the need to upgrade ;)

HMURCHISON  What exactly makes you a "loyal" customer? Just because you purchase something doesn't entitle you to claim your loyalty IMO. Software development is ongoing and your upgrades fund future development so rejoicing in the fact that you don't need to upgrade neither makes you wrong or right but it draws questions to your "loyalty" and how much you really have. Just an observation.

CORPSECORPS  Though i can see there's significant power here, Tidy Up! has got to be one of the least intuitive apps i've used.

With strategies, baskets, smart baskets, so many panes, so many collapsible sections, the odd way inclusions and exclusions are specified, the way all the parts interact, and the peculiar style of the resulting reports, methods of applying actions to results, and frequent need to further search the results, once a search is completed i'm so unclear about what i'm really seeing in the result, i don't dare actually tell the thing to do any deletions.

I'm somewhat disappointed there aren't features for locating duplicate emails (such as possible spam or group crossposts) which typically have differing headers and even some content, and can't be located via external information like file size, name, date, and the like.

Every time i get this out to give it another try, i just find myself frustrated and confused all over again. It feels like having to learn how to use an entire office suite when you just want something to keep a few text notes.

CRSOUSER  The application works for the most part, and the developer is quick to personally respond to questions.. but the application lacks some key features and usability that I think are essential in this type of application. I paid for the full featured program

My #1 peeve is this application lacks advanced direct comparison matching like SHA-1 or MD5. Almost every other duplicate checker and backup program for Mac, PC, Linux, etcetera use this methodology and through experience I just don't trust name, mod time, or CRC32 dup checking.

My #2 peeve is the overall usability of the application and trying to define what you want to check. It dumped down way too much and to me is annoying. I just want to point at a directory and say go check it for dups with these options. The basket system and being partially limited to pre-defined searches and custom labeling of tasks are annoying.

My #3, in the registered version I am using 1.4.5 there is a serious bug of if I say to check for dups in folder in my desktop it searches all directories above the directory I am trying to search as well unless I add it as a specific 'search path' on the side view. This could very easily lead to false positives or unintended deletions.

I crawled through it for a task I needed to complete very near term... but am on the search for a better product that applies the keep it simple and do it affective methodology. Thus I am being kind when I give it 3 Stars.

PATRICK SHEEHAN  I'm guessing that some reviewers here haven't taken the time to read the "read me" file to learn how to use the program. I've been using Tidy Up since its inception and have found it incredibly useful for keeping my Macs' files in order. Often I transfer files across several machines and duplicates (and older versions) can easily become nested in folders where they're not expected. Tidy Up races through all of the files on my hard drives and presents me with the exact information I need to decide on what to keep and what to toss.

What I especially fail to understand is the lambasting going on here for $20 for an upgrade to a program that many folks have used for years for free. It seems to make common sense that if a programmer spends time rewriting code to both add features and to adapt to Apple's new operating systems that such time should be remunerated. Best as I can tell, no one is being forced to upgrade. If the program is useful to you, $20 seems a small price to pay for all of the benefits it offers.

Just my two cents, but I've had no problem backing that with my twenty dollars.
