  • AppleScript: A powerful dictionary for easy scripting.
  • Fast & Solid IRC Core: Powered by the Irssi engine.
  • Fast & Solid SILC Core: Powered by the SILC Toolkit.
  • Plug-In Love: Unlimited extensability through Plug-Ins.
  • Tight Ship: IRC over SSL for the paranoia.
  • Styled For You: Pick the look for your conversations, powered by WebKit.
  • Colors of the World: Fully compatible with mIRC colors.
  • Unintrusive Interface: Sleek multi- or single-window modes with tabs or a drawer.
  • File Transfer Medly: Full DCC transfer support with resume and passive DCC.
  • They're Your Buddies: A buddy list for your IRC friends.
  • Multiplicity: The freedom to chat on multiple servers.
  • Open Minded: Open source, like it should be.
  • Much, Much More! Just a better experience all-around.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 2.1(3761):
  • Fixes the crash on launch for 10.3.9 users.
  • Fixes the problem where you can't send messages after reconnecting to a server.
  • Fixes SILC not showing room messages.
  • Fixes JavaScript plugins.
  • Introduces 'Auto join chat rooms on invite' as an option in the Behavior preferences.
  • Adds the previously hidden 'Show Notices as Private Chat' preference an option in the Interface preferences.
  • Fixes /amsg, /broadcast, /ame and /bract so that it uses the correct local user for each message sent.
  • Fixes where non-alphanumeric nicknames weren't getting highlighted.
  • The Get Info panel for a user (/whois) will now say "offline" if the user was not online.
  • More support for receiving room notices and messages that are directed only to users with certain user modes (for example "PRIVMSG %#room :my notice").
  • Allow the room part reason to contain colors and formatting.
  • Allows @ in usernames for Jabber/XMPP connections.
  • No longer joins a non-existent channel when accidently having two spaces in the /join command.
  • Make the title shorter for the highlight mention alert. This should make it fit in more Growl styles.
  • Allow plugin commands to be used again for auto commands in connections during application launch. This mainly affected using the /msg command.
  • Adds the iTunes and Google plugins back.
  • Minor French localization changes.
  • Fix the Dutch localization.
  • Adds a Norwegian localization. Translated by Kenneth Stevenson.
  • Adds a Japanese localization. Translated by redgecko.
REQUIREMENTS

KKNOPP  Application hasn't been updated in almost a year, they have features that don't work as features.. and no one is ever around, this project looks dead in the water to me folks.

Sad, it was so promising.

KKNOPP  BTW the screenshot there is OOOooold I almost didn't download it because of it.

And BTW I am having support problems. I've sent questions to both emails, here, and to the IRC channel with no response....

Communication is the key people.

KKNOPP  Recent user here, and I had some questions that weren't in the facts. I emailed, and even went to the chat page... no one is ever talking. Or there to help.

:\

I used Snak forever before this, and was wanting to know if this application also supported aliases or actions like other IRC applications do. If it does, I can't find it.

JOHN NOWAK  Can't even get it to add an SILC server in the latest version (2.1). The join room button seems broken as well... manually joining in the console seems okay. Had to delete preferences twice so far as it crashes on start. Same experience on two different computers on Leopard.

Someone, please write a STABLE SILC client! I'll pay for it!

****.

FOOBAZ  Version 2.1(3720) of Colloquy fixes a lot of bugs and is far more stable and less resource-intensive than earlier versions. I tried it and ended up switching back to Colloquy from X-Chat.

JOHN NOWAK  I take it back -- This doesn't even deserve three starts. Just had to trash my prefs because Colloquy keeps crashing on launch. SILC support is barely functional. Buddy lists don't work right. Iconography in the Connections window is insane... I still have no idea how to tell if something is connecting or not. What on earth is the lightning bolt arrow supposed to mean? Garbage garbage garbage! I'm going back to irssi.

JOHN NOWAK  Colloquy is a mixed bag.

On the plus side, it looks nice, works nice (mostly) once you have it set up, and most importantly for me, it has SILC support.

Unfortunately, it has a number of issues. Appearance preferences usually do not update unless you restart the app. There's a bug in tab handling if you use the tabbed window mode (dragging a new tab to the left side jumps it to the right). It crashes on me once a day or so. It doesn't give much indication of how a connection attempt is going, especially on startup. It keeps creating a transcripts folder even though I have logging disabled. Etc etc...

If you need SILC, this is definitely your best bet as nothing else exists beyond irssi-silc or gaim. If you don't need it, well... it is still probably your best bet. Just get used to the annoyances. It's a shame there isn't a more solid IRC client for the Mac. I'd happy pay $15-25 for one if there was.

SIMEN  It looks nice, and is easy enough. But it is so slow... When I write the application hang for like 5-6 seconds, maybe like one or two times each minute. Not good enough, totally useless for me.

8BIT-WINTERMUTE  I switched to this from X-Chat Aqua. It's mac-like enough.

The only things that bug me are the growl-style popups that are a bit annoying, and I wish the nick column could automatically be as wide as it needed to be instead of me having to go back into the options to keep changing it. Other than that, this is the best mac client I've used for IRC.

It sits at 2% cpu use on my dual core iMac BTW not 65%

LEONCAHUN  2% cpu is only true when you use it _very_ carefully, like just letting drop in chat-messages, etc.

But: whenif you scroll in populated windows, when you change themes, etc. cpu-drawing jumps up very high (like 100% on a Core Duo), leaving the app temporarily unresponsive, therefore unusable, at least warming up your Intel-Mac.

It's a pity since otherwise this app could be _the_ OS X IRC-app.

But please fix ressource-management first. Thx.

JOHN NOWAK  Unfortunately, it'll never be fixed. There's massive incompetence on the part of the author.

LEONCAHUN  The app is nice, though it should be easier to switch views (tab-based view, drawer-based view, etc).

However, what is a problem is the amount of cpu-cycles this puppy draws. In Activity Monitor it jumps up and down, crossing the 65% level (on a 2GHz Core Duo)! Come on, that's an IRC app (and I am talking about being connected to _one_ server, and _four_ channels at a time; not like 20 servers, and 80 channels).

Bottom line: this app warms up my Macbook Pro more than Safari under heavy use; comparable to Aperture preparing some slideshow-previews, or stuff. I dont think that's acceptable.
