EDITOR NOTES
The most recent version of Apple's X11 is available only on the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installation disks.
DESCRIPTION
Apple X11 for Mac OS X offers a complete X Window System implementation for running X11-based applications on Mac OS X. Based on the de facto-standard for X11, the open source XFree86 project, X11 for Mac OS X is compatible, fast and fully integrated with Mac OS X. It includes the full X11R6.6 technology including a window server, libraries and basic utilities such as xterm.
WHAT'S NEW
Version 1.1.3: This update addresses several issues in the X11 for Mac OS X package, enabling it to better handle:
- GLX stereo visuals
- offscreen rendering to GLX Pbuffers and Pixmaps
To tell X11 to take advantage of stereo visuals, enter:
$ defaults write com.apple.x11 enable_stereo -bool true
This update also addresses font issues present in X11 1.1.2, and is recommended for all users.
REQUIREMENTS
Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later, X11 1.1, 1.1.1, or 1.1.2.
Not Compatible with OS X 10.5

I had the same problem with VMD 1.8.5 and 1.8.3 until I added the apple supplied comment to my .xinitrc file in my home directory. VMD works locally after restarting X windows. BUT!!! Importing another VMD session, say from a LINUX box, does not work even with this fix. vi .xinitrc ;;; then insert this line before the end defaults write com.apple.x11 enable_stereo -bool true # start the window manager

MR.BRICOLAGE I am a fairly new Mac-user and have a question: the text to the update says 'To tell X11 to take advantage of stereo visuals, enter: $ defaults write com.apple.x11 enable_stereo -bool true' Where do I enter that command line? (Version 1.1.3)

i downloaded this update for my intel imac and now it appears that i am unable to run VMD (http://www.ks.uiuc.edu/Research/vmd/) (i run vmd_linux remotely on my mac from our lab cluster headnode). It just crashes immediately after opening, with a segmentation fault. When i use strace, i seem to have errors in with GLX (as one would expect!) eventhough I have done the "defaults" update command as recommended. Has anyone else had this or a similar problem? BEDOUIN This showed up as an update on my PowerMac, but not on my MacBook. I downloaded the installer for my MacBook, and it said the install was not needed. Both machines are running 10.4.8. (Version 1.1.2)

ANDREWA121 My guess is that the issues that it addresses only crop up when running X11 on PowerPC architecture. I know little, though, so this is just a theory. (Version 1.1.2)

MATHIAS it showed up on my MacBook Pro via Software Update (Version 1.1.2)

FERRUCCIO BUSONI Shows up on my iMac Core Duo. Perhaps you don't have X11 installed on your MacBook? (Version 1.1.2)

HOLYPOLY You can extract and then install the new version over your old X11 installation by using Pacifist. This is the method I used and had success with, after even a re-install of X11 from the Tiger Installer disc wasn't recognised by the updater. (Version 1.1.3)

ANONYMOUS I'm trying to install x11 on my iBook running Tiger. I keep getting a message in the installer when selecting a volume to install on. The message says "newer software exists, x11 will not install". Any suggestions? (Version 1.0)

DEATHAXE I think it's because X11 is already installed with Tiger (Version 1.0)

NICECAMAN I was just wondering about that, since it doesnt show up in Spotlight. Puzzling, I find. (Version 1.0)

SAUSBAND I just had the same issue on a brand spanking new G5 and found the xllsdk.pkg file through spotlight. I tried the install from there and it worked fine. Good luck. (Version 1.0)

OEMB1905 X11 comes on the Tiger DVD - you have to reinstall and choose options and then select the x11 package since it is not part of the default install. I would also find the Developer package and install it, since if you like or need x11 capabilities, you will want these toys as well. Jonathan Haack (Version 1.0)

LEIFH You don't have to re-install. What I did was put in "Mac OSX Install Disc 1" and opened "Optional Installs". When you get to the page with the checkboxes, click the arrow next to Applications and check X11. Install. (Version 1.0)

SGUITTON Same issue
updating or re-installing from apple new downloaded full installer says that a newer version already exists on the mac
but I can't find it ;( (Version 1.1.2)

JONATHAN okay - x11 does not necessarilly come installed and it can be used by any mac user. panther vs. darwin? heh? i use both and need X11, because Apple did not install it on my mini and I cannot do a clean install every time anything goes wrong. and you don't need to reinstall everything . . .

ANONYMOUS Amazing. X11 Panther is easy to use (nothing to do, just click the icon) and stable. Works perfectly with The Gimp and Cine Paint. (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS The release is aimed more at users of Darwin rather than Panther. Yes, the page should say that it's not meant to be installed over 10.3's install. And yes, the installer probably should say that it's already installed. They don't. Get over it and move on, there's no need for name calling or Apple bashing. (Version 1.0)
