KisMAC is an open-source and free WiFi stumbler/scanner application for Mac OS X. It has an advantage over MacStumbler/iStumbler/NetStumbler in that it uses monitor mode and passive scanning.
KisMAC supports several third party USB cards - USB Prism2, and USB Ralink support. All of the internal AirPort Extreme hardware is supported as well.
Please note: This program is not intended for novices but for professional users. Take this as your warning, you should be prepared for advanced topics and know what you are doing with your system.
Features:

Different attacks against encrypted networks
Deauthentication attacks

FRED_ALSO I think Snow Leopard broke this and the other scanners. In preferences, I select AirPort card in active or passive mode and get an error that the drivers can't be loaded.
After I click the OK button about 10 times I get the following message.
"KisMAC was able to load the driver backend for Airport Card, but it was unable to create an interface. Make sure your capture device is properly plugged in. If you think everything is correct, you can try to restart your computer. Maybe your console.log and system.log show more details."
IMPISH500 Depending on which mac and airport card it has, try using the Airport Extreme Card chosen in the preferences of kisMac. (Version 0.3)

TAS50 This version has much better support for passive mode on the airport extreme cards in the Macbooks and Macbook Pros. If you want to see the full change log you have to got to the website and look at the commits in track from the current revision to the previous revision. It's a lot of small stuff and a ton of crashers. (Version r319)
DOOBIEXX Awesome to see this project under development again! The only true gui for testing wireless network's. If you can't get kismac to work properly then check their support forums' which are filled with info. Your second best option for testing wireless networks is honestly switching out of os x and load a virtual machine with Backtrack 3, and have access to every "test" tool imagined, but for OS X, kismac is the one and only with a gui. If your good with command lines get aircrack-ng through darwin ports and use that. (Version r318)
XPLICIT That's probably because you have no wireless device with Orinoco or PrismII chipset in use, but just an Airport card or something. And such a device is not supported by KisMAC as far as I know. (Version r242)
"KisMAC supports several third party PCMCIA cards - Orinoco, PrismII, Cisco Aironet, Atheros and PrismGT. USB Prism2 is supported as well, and USB Ralink support is in development. All of the internal AirPort hardware is supported as well." (Version r272)

CHEESYTOE You have to delete the preferences first, then launch up KisMAC, i think it is a safety measure on KisMac's part so that goverment officials don't know how to use it =P.
All you have to do is delete the preferences file and then relaunch. (Version r272)

PEANUT BUTTER Looks like KisMac is temporarily down, but not out. From their website......
With the introduction of §202c German politicians proved their complete incompetence. Law in Germany: possession of child pornography - two years imprisonment. Distribution of security software is half as bad. Even worse politicians still believe in the successful ban of digital information, obviously not reckoning globalization.
We are heading straight to a country I do not want to be living in.
KisMAC will live on. Different people. Different country. Same "threat" to national security. (Version 0.21a)
