MTCOBRA  An observation:

After totally removing MacUpdate Desktop from my computer, including all the files that AppZap got rid of, and the file that Hazel found that AppZap failed to find, I downloaded MUD 5.0.3. Had to enter my user email and password all over again, of course, as expected. Ran the program and the results of the so called 'out-of-date' programs were so off-the-wall... I checked version numbers of programs while running them but MUD said the installed version was something much older!

I don't know what's gone wacky here, but I'll wait for the next revision... I have darn near all of my apps on the email me when there's an update, so I can't be THAT far behind as this program is trying to tell me. I'd expect to be told that maybe 3-6 apps were out-of-date. Not 35!

Earlier versions (5.0) worked fine for me.

DANA SUTTON  The come-on blurb, presumably supplied by the developer, says "DESCRIPTION

MacUpdate Desktop is the best way to automatically keep all the software on your Mac up-to-date. Apple Software Update only updates Apple branded apps. " But in one way, this app. does not match Software Update: that app. periodically self-launches at user-specified intervals, this one only works when the user launches it when and if the user remembers to do that. This would be a lot more useful if it had some kind of automated feature similar to that of Software Update. If it did, I'd give it fives across the board.

EDIFIED  Hi Chad, thanks for the extended trial. Looks like a LOT has been fixed though there's plenty to do (I'm sure you're working hard).

As I was running it through it's paces it occurred to me that you might change the shareware restriction to 3 Download Installs/Week. The app could display the number of downloads used/remaining in the bottom right like this: 2 of 3 Installs Used - Register for Unlimited.

The advantage is that people can always see how useful the app will be to them with LOTS of red outdated software- of course they can update manually but after a few of these automatic will be pretty tempting.

I think it actually might be more restrictive since right now a trial user can update their whole system and then why buy? Finally it solves the whole "extended trial" issue since clearly the app is currently in heavy development with lots of great changes to expect in the next 6 months.

Also how about a bugtracker/suggestion system. Trac is fun :)

MNM  Doing a search for "Appfresh" redirects to the MacUpdate Desktop page. It's hard to believe that it isn't intentional and seems pretty low. Or is it just me?

I've used MacUpdate Desktop for the trial period. It's not bad, but the trial period really isn't long enough to bring me to a comfort level where I'd spend $20/year on it.

ABILSTEIN  I am a frequent Macupdate user, and I think you've made a lot of nice improvements to the site recently. However, if you are not listing these other products because you feel that they compete with MUD, then this web site has lost my trust as a Mac software repository. I have no problem with your promotion of your own product, but I really hope you rethink this decision. Your analogies simply do not hold up, and even if they did, it still wouldn't make it okay.

People will find out about the software anyway, and when they do they will lose trust in Macupdate as I just did. I highly recommend you read some Seth Godin to learn about social contracts with your customers.

SCRIVENS  Just tried 5.0.3 and it is not showing current version number, release date and description for 98% of apps and most are greyed out. 5.0.1 still gives the full display, as did 5.0.2.

EDIFIED  You might consider adding extending 10 days every time you release a new version. Otherwise I, who had complaints before, can't try out an update to see what's been fixed and whether I have additional feedback or care to purchase MUD.

GCOGHILL  The ten day trial is just too short. Especially as there seem to be some kinks to be worked out. Should be something like 3 or 5 update checks. Or at least 30 days. The trial ran out way before I had a chance to work with the app much, and now with a new update I am out of luck.
