    DAVEBARNES  Still have problems.

MU shows that I have MailForge 1.1 even though I have 1.2.4 which is the latest.

MU shows that I have 1.0b of RIP, an arcade game. But, I have 1.0b of RIP a CD music ripper. Confusion reigns.

DP8  Thanks for the feedback - as I emailed to you, the developers of MailForge have conflicting version information in their program and we will contact them to try to resolve.

We are working on applications that have identical names, like RIP and Pandora - these cases are very rare (2 out of 32,000) but we will better handle them in a future update.

    thanks!

MISHA  Those widgets, which effectively provide a front-end to MacUpdate (or the less-good VersionTracker if you prefer) suffer from the same version matching issues other tools do [and which MacUpdate Desktop largely doesn't] and don't feature any ability to automatically download+install updates.

If you don't mind clicking lots of times, though, they certainly can be useful if you're looking for a free alternative.

    MACSOLU  --

    (Constructive criticism)...

It would seem to make sense that a app whose primary purpose is to keep track of the version of each and every app installed on your local hard drive would, by its very nature, have it's OWN VERSION VISIBLE when the "version" checkbox is activated via the Get Info window and this app is within a Finder window set for "View as List."

This is easily rectified by adding the following field to the "Info.plist" inside the contents:

    CFBundleShortVersionString

    5.0.1

I would hope that this oversight is corrected in the next update.

JOEL MUELLER  Sure, the version number isn't listed in the "Get Info" window of MacUpdate Desktop itself, and probably could be. But that has nothing to do with the apps functionality, features or anything else. And in fact, the version number stored in CFBundleShortVersionString is often not representative of the actual version number of the app, since Apple has no single standardization for devs when coding in their version numbers.

When Desktop scans apps, it's looking at all of the places where version number strings can be coded into the app. We've gone far beyond basic comparison of CFBundleShortVersionString when making it easy to show that an app is outdated and needs updating on your Mac.

    MACSOLU  --

I understand what you're saying. I'm just pointing out that I find it very helpful to immediately see the version number of the app in List View. Approximately 95% of all apps have this feature, and when I encounter one that does not display its version... I find it to be irritating.

As for your comment that "the version number stored in CFBundleShortVersionString is often not representative of the actual version number of the app", well, that does not seem to be true for the vast majority of apps I have downloaded and/or installed. It seems that most developers will take the time to ensure the CFBundleShortVersionString is correct.

    Thanks for listening.

RJMORITA  It still does not show any applications without the extension .app attached to the name. I reported the problem in 5.0. but it's not fixed in 5.01.

DP8  If you remove the ".app" extension from an application bundle, the Finder will convert it to a normal folder, and it is no longer considered to be an application. MacUpdate Desktop will scan for non-bundle apps as well, such as some older carbon based executables, and those do not need to have the .app extension.

Feel free to email me further - desktop@macupdate.com

PAWLIGER  How many of the crashes in 5.0 are fixed? I tried the 10 day trial, used it about once a day, and see 10 crash logs in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter, once for each of the daily crashes. Would like to try another trial with the new version to see whether the fairly steep subscription price is warranted by the quality of the product.

DP8  Please send any crash logs to desktop@macupdate.com

There are no known crashes on 10.6, and 1 rare one on 10.5 which we are working with Apple to resolve.

EGAR  I'm having trouble downloading version 5. I click the link to download and I'm directed back to this page. The problem exists on both Firefox and Safari. Is it me or is there something wrong with the link?

DP8  Please make sure that your are not blocking HTTP referrer, such as with "private browsing" or other internet security software - the download files hosted at macupdate.com require the referrer information so that we can control the huge bandwidth costs involved. If that doesn't work, please contact me- desktop@macupdate.com

EGAR  The referrer URL was being blocked by my firewall. I changed it to allow referrers and the download worked. Thanks for the help!

By the way, why do other downloads from the MacUpdate site work when the referrer is blocked, just not MacUpdate Desktop?

DP8  Many of the downloads on macupdate.com are hosted by our download servers, but not all of them. Files hosted on our download servers require the referrer - files hosted on third party servers may or may not.

PINTOFGUINNESS  I am having trouble with this version scanning all my applications. It says I only have 24 applications and that is all it will scan. It also has trouble with the version numbers on some of them, saying I have an earlier version installed when I have the current version installed.

I have trashed all prefs and reinstalled but the same thing keeps happening.

    Any ideas?

DP8  Please re-download the application or contact us - desktop@macupdate.com

The original upload had a problem which could be causing your issues.

As for version numbers, sometimes developers mistakenly forgot to properly update the version information in the code. Please report these applications to us so that we can confirm and work with the developers to correct. You may use the "Set version to current" option to override the local version number so that it will show up properly.

    thanks

JOHN QUINN  How do I get the trial to start? After launching the app, I am prompted to log in with my MacUpdate account, after which again I am told that it was a free account and that I should upgrade to gain access to the app. What about the 10 days of trial? I tried to "register" from within the app to see if a trial option would come up, but all it says is "checking account status" and my log in details become greyed out.

JOHN QUINN  Sorry, nevermind. I TOTALLY overlooked that same question further down the page. Clicking on the provided link to register is certainly the easiest way. The entire process could have been made a little more intuitive though.

DP8  The login panel has a "Register" button, which will present the MacUpdate Member Registration window - you enter in your name and email, and then on the next screen you can select "Trial" or payment method. If you already have a MacUpdate member account for the email address you enter, it will use that account for the Trial, otherwise, it will create a new Trial membership.

You can also sign up for the trial on the macupdate.com website if you already have a membership and are logged into the site.
