Hide-Out! allows you to hide and password protect a folder in the Finder. Now also sets the folders invisible bit which means that its still invisible when you boot into OS X.

In our defence, Hide-Out! 2.1 always works! It is Mac OS 10.4.x which does not always update the window to show that Hide-Out! has worked...

If you hide your folder and then search for it with spotlight you will not find it and - after you have made the Hide-Out! folder visible - if you do a search for it - you'll be able to find it again. As a work around to get the folder to show up again in the Finder - double click to select it in the spotlight results.

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do about this behaviour as it is down to Apple to make sure the OS updates the window when something changes. We believe that it has something to do with spotlight and its cache and we are working on a more reliable fix for the problem.

Not very hidden as all you have to do
is locate the directory a shell (terminal). The program simply renames the folder with a "." at the beginning. The password protection is pointless. This is good to hide files from only the prying eyes of a clueless person or a WinTel biggot.

This is laborious, but will get you out of a hole. Follow it EXACTLY. If you screw up, it's your problem.

Find the place where the folder would have been. Now go UP one level, so you can see the containing folder.
Open a new Finder window and open Terminal from /Applications/Utilities.
type 'cd' followed by a space. That's three characters: lowercase c, lowercase d and a space.
that containing folder from step 1: drag it to the terminal and hit return.
back in the terminal, type 'ls -a'. At this point, you should see your missing folder. It will be named with a dot prefix.
type 'mv' followed by a space. Now type a dot, and the first character of the missing folder's name. Upper and lower case is important here.
hit the TAB key to complete the filename. if it didn't complete, type the next character, hit TAB again. repeat until you have the whole name.
now type a space, and something simple like 'FOUND'. Hit return.
back in the Finder, go inside the containing folder, and rename 'FOUND' to something sensible.

Please help! Used this program and it seemed to work fine until recently when I tried to open the application and it said "Status: No Hide-Out Defined" and wanted me to enter a new password. When I did I get this error "An exception of NilObjectException was not handled. The application must shut down." and then closes the app. Furiously looking for an answer but can't find one. Please help!

Just one minor bug with this novel program: It will, eventually, forget your password. And unless you have a working knowledge of Terminal, you can kiss your hidden files good-bye. Because it's freeware, the developer offers no support. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROGRAM unless you need a second trash can.
