What's New
Version 6.0.8:
Compatible with Mac OS X 10.7.3
Adds the ability to clear Quarantine flag from items in user selected folders.
Feeling bad because I use this since many many years and I’ve never done a review for this jewel:
It’s still the best of all the all-purpose utilities out there. Five stars, minimum.
Why? It’s regularly updated, it’s reliable, it has a startup script, it has no silly-fancy GUI, it does everything you need for maintenance/troubleshooting and more.
I found a contradiction in the description and requirements. In the Des. it says for PPC and Intel, yet in the requirements it says Intel only. So you need to clarify that. Right now I am running 6.0.3 on my G5 with no problem. I am DLing 6.0.5 to see what happens. Will write back with what I find, End of Line...
OK I have tested on two OS systems. Leopard 10.8 on my G5 and Tiger 10.4.11. on my Pismo PowerBook. On both of them LC ran perfectly without any trouble although a heck of a lot slower on the Pismo. If you do not know what a Pismo is look it up in MacTracker under PowerBooks. It runs about 80% slower than my G5 and has only 640 of RAM and a 400 MHz PowerPC G3. So if you Tiger or Leopard it should run at the system levels I said. End of Line...
Well, once again a fine utility has moved on although the first release of Lion Cache Cleaner was a fat binary. But, once again I am looking at software suggestions that have nothing to do with LC. Almost All that are listed are tweaks or devices to customize the Mac. They do not do the repairs on the Mac. LCC is a tool used to fix problems with your system, library, user folder and invisible items. The above items do not. When you recommend an item make sure you know what the item does in comparison to the one posted because some times I think it is done blindly. End of Line...
PS: I want to start a new Magazine called The Mac Barrel. I got this suggestion from MacUpdate. But I lack the knowledge to put one together as a PDF mag. I am looking for people who can write, review and do topics that help the MacUser. I still have all my contact I made over 25 years of writing. Your reward will be free software for what you review. I also need proof readers or basically the whole gambit. I am hoping that MacUpDate will list it like I got them to list ATPM with one difference, the deadline. We will have a tentative one but will not print until it is ready. I already have several articles and an opening editorial ready to go. All they need are some polishing. If interested contact me at gameboybob@aol.com. End of Line...
I bought this little app via American Express, but was switched to a paypal payment. I do not do buseness with paypal because carelessly got hacked, insluding all my financial data a few years ago. Once burned… I won't buy any MacUpdate item again. I plan to file a complaint against all included parties in this illegal bate and switch--another reason not to do business with paypal.
First I want to take my hat off to the programmer of LCC. I was really surprised when I saw that he still is writing it as a fat binary. While all other utility writers are switching to Intel only, he is still being loyal to the PPC users as well and why not, it also means more people to use it. I have used this program when it was called JCC and gave it fantastic reviews then! As it evolved this is one diamond that has increased in value over the years. A new user may not see the true power of LCC if they just look at the window. The true power is in the menus. If you are new to LCC, take some time and READ the manual on it so you know what it can do. This is one of the most powerful utilities out there to solve so many Mac problems. This is not a tweaker program. It is designed to help fix common problems that occur on your Mac. There is two items I would like to see added to LCC, the ability to turn on the debugger software at start-up and for other apps. Only MacPilot offers that and I am not a big fan of MP because it has caused major problems for me where my right side menus would not load at all and I would have to finally have to do a system up-date to solve it. The Archive up-date would just carry the bug over with it. One other ability that would be nice if you could choose the volume you want to work on as well.
Anyhow, if you take the time to study the menus of LCC You will quickly discover how powerful this tool is. Like I said before the only thing missing is the ability to tun on debugging options for different apps and the ability to choose the volume to work on. If I was to recommend any non commercial sw this is one that you should have as one of your tools. I just hope that my current serial number works because due to financial problems due to my health I do not know if I can pay for another upgrade. If you want a tool that does what some commercial tools cannot do, then this is the on to go with. Just remember this is not a tool to tweak your Mac with, it is a powerful tool to fix your Mac. End of Line...
We still have a G4 tower and G3 iBook, along with my Intel iMac at home, so it's nice to see some PPC love... I have to ask however, why write a universal binary for software intended for Lion, which doesn't run on PPC? That doesn't make any sense.
Davidravenmoon I agree. This software's author seems to lack any common sense. What is the point of bloating the software with extra coding for a platform the software isn't geared towards.
My other gripe and why I will never use this software again is the fact the author of the software doesn't allow you to use the tool when logged into the root account.
If you want Universal Binary support check out CleanMyMac because it is far superior to this tool in every possible way you can imagine.
got a copy of LeopardCC (the updated to SLCC) - it has lots of features, but I have only used "tune xxx broadband"
first time I used the the above feature it screwed up my mac, but after reporting to developer he did fix it - i'm just a bit gun shy to use that feature again
I use OnyX for my maintenance, just don't know if LionCC is worth the $7 upgrade fee
OK, after working with LCC I have hit a major glitch that I never hit on any other version I have used over its' evolution. The problem has to do with "restart system daemons" command. It seems to be caught in a loop when I launch it and will run like the Ever Ready Rabbit... on & on & on with out stopping. The command period will not work to kill it. Nor can you quit the program as well. So, I wind up having to kill and restart it with MainMenu (another excellent sw to have). I have tested this command under different conditions and it always does it. Now the Mac I am running it on is a dual G5 one gig mother board, 2 gigs of RAM and an ATI Radeon X800XP Pro with 256 megs of VRAM. I went back to SLCC to see if I could replicate the problem but it worked fine there. I usually like to run LCC at the end of the month as with my other tools I have since it fell down the stares with me due to a spinal problem but I did restore it back to 95% of health. The only 2 things it does not like is being shut down for long periods of time and put to sleep for long periods as well. Anyhow no matter what software is running when using LCC the problem persist and would be glad to help to correct the problem. Every thing works fine and I still say LCC is a valuable tool to have if your Mac is acting up. If you ever talked to an Apple Genius they most often will be quick ti say wipe the drive and a new. In my years of working with Mac I always found a solution with the right sw utilities that most MG know nothing about. Just bear in mind that 95% of the time the issue is a sw one and you do not need to wipe your drive. Get a copy of MacPilot and look at the key board commands section. You will find them invaluable. I do not like the program itself because it screwed up my drive several times but, those keyboard commands are great to print out and learn. End of Line...
I'm not clear about what conditions under which some people are seeing SLCC slow down their Mac, eat processor time, etc. If this is happening while the SLCC app itself is performing certain tasks, it's normal for anything (including issuing commands directly in Terminal) that executes some of these tasks, to eat up a lot of processor time, memory, etc. Are some people finding that SLCC is using more resources while performing some tasks, than some other methods of executing those tasks? Are some people setting up SLCC to tell OS X to perform background tasks of various kinds, and that's what's eating the resources? Same often applies there. I just checked my Login Items, and I don't see anything there related to SLCC, though I seem to recall SLCC has options to do that (correct me if I'm wrong)--have people experiencing problems, removed these SLCC-installed Login Items to see if there's any improvement?
So I've downloaded Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner and installed it.
Where is the registration number found? All I've received so far is a PayPal sales confirmation e-mail. I can't find the registration number anywhere I look, so I've e-mailed the developer ...
Since updating to the newest version, running permissions repair causes my fan to work overtime.
Have used it for years and this is the first time this has happened.
I was using this app and everything seemed to be fine. Then after using it several times my iMac seemed to slow down.I deleted it and now the icon pops up in my bar every time,I don"t know how to get rid of it?
When you select ClamX(in LCC) to virus scan your download folder
the scan says "scanning internet system plugins folder", "checking widgets for viruses" and "checking desktop for viruses" but there's no indication that one's download folder is being scanned, so I guess download folder isn't, in fact, being scanned.
Same issue in the previous version of LCC.
No big deal, though; I've installed ClamX app itself and use that for my scanning needs. It will scan the download folder without issue.
Other than that, LCC is really fine.
I tried Leopard Cache Cleaner 4.0.2 with 10.5.1. I reviewed the documentation and did not have any applications open other than Safari when I used LCC 4.0.2. I have a 2.16 Ghz MacBook with 2GB of Ram. I was very disappointed as after I chose Optimize System - Optimize Files, I had at least eight applications completed deleted including Mail, Quicktime 7.3, TextEdit and several other applications, three which were in the dock and changed to the application icon with the black question mark. The common symptom I observed that may be helpful to the developers were all eight of the applications, and also files associated with the "Recent" use, were the files/applications deleted. Fortunately I had backups of all applications and all but one of the files.
So it sounds like what you're saying, is LCC 4.0.2 deleted all the applications and files that were listed under "Recent Items" under the Apple menu in the Finder, instead of just clearing the Recent Items list?
Have not been able to get Check RootKits (any LCC version) to work. I just get a dialog that it's working and working and working... without reporting Results! iMac Intel 2 core duo.
