AutoHide is a simple background application that will automatically hide applications after you switch out of them. This is convent if you work with applications that have many windows and switch between them often. AutoHide will automatically hide your other applications, reducing screen clutter and making a cleaner work environment.
Requirements
PPC, Mac OS X 10.1 or later.
Be the first to recommend a similar software title.
It works for me in X 10.4.8 but causes the application you switched from using command-tab disappear from Application Switcher panel the next time you command-tab.
I also couldn't add any application to either of the "Never Hide" lists.
Will this app ever be updated again? It's such a shame a useful utility like this is abandoned.

I love this program except that some system entry screens will not remain in focus when you need to type a password or take any other action.
This happens when I need to switch accounts for example. I have to click on the window quickly, then type in one character at a time until the password or text string is complete.
I wrote the developer about this but never heard back from them.

Something here bothers me. Unless this guy is doing code injection like Unsanity then all this program has to do is get at one setting to set the default way to treat inactive windows - a system-wide setting.
It may very well be a simple command line with 'defaults'; it could be a good dig and a good hack; but it would hardly take more than a single line of code to accomplish.
So what the heck is he doing with a 1.6 MB download? Think! Safari is only 30% more! Think!

Autohide works well (although it's just a little slow). I use OS 10.3, and though I love expose, autohide has its advantages. BUT you can not turn it on/off from the system preferences.

Try HideItControl, it's fast and can be turned off and on as you like (either permanently or temporarily).

If the first two posters are using ASM, why on earth don't they turn on "Single Application Mode" from ASM's Special Features tab?
What does this app do that ASM doesn't do?
Or did you just not pay for ASM? I seem to recall special feature being disabled until you buy it...

or why not use Panther Cache Cleaner, it has a setting for single-application mode.
Panther Cache Cleaner is great, has been around longer than most others of its type and has never failed me or caused trouble.

AutoHide does an excellent job with window management. It reduces window clutter by showing only the active application and hiding the rest automatically. It works fast and I recommend using it with Show Desktop (another great freeware). Show Desktop hides all applications, and is customizable to suit user needs.
To avoid problems with installing disk images, I recommend setting the AutoHide preferences to never hide Finder. Otherwise, the disk image window won't appear till the desktop is clicked. This is a one-time setting, and then it's perfect. I also suggest placing AutoHide as a login item in Preferences to auto-launch when login.
Overall, a great product I foresee using for a long time, and would gladly donate to. Hopefully there'll be a donate link on the developer's page one day.

Programs such as this one has made the "X" migration a pleasant experience. I am using this application along with ASM to enhance the limited desktop space. Much thanks to AutoHide for keeping it freeware status.
