Just download it and add it to your bag of tricks.

I'm an old hand at macs and I've known for years, that there's a lot of magic in this stuff.

Don't let'em fool ya!

You would think Stuffit would work to unrar, expand, un-Stuff everything?

Nope.

Or Rar Expander?

Or The Unarchiver?

Yup.

They all work.

None of them work.

Get them all.

For some reason, some files will only open with one of these prog's.

I dunno. I've given up.

Old enough hand, like I said, to know it's magic.

UnrarX opened a rar file that none of above would open.

Kudos to it.

Get it.

i've used unrar for a long time and i like it, but i noticed it's been getting slower and slower every day to the point that it takes me longer to unrar a file then it did to download it.

it also slows down my whole system.

it used to unrar my usual files in seconds and now it takes 1-5 minutes.

Amazingly, if you search MacUpdate.com for "Rar," UnrarX does NOT come up!

Since unRarX hasn't been updated in quite a while it still includes some fairly outdated versions of unrar and par2. Here's how you can manually update the binaries yourself:

RAR
Download the newest version of RAR (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11159/rar), extract it, and look for a binary file simply called "unrar". Now locate UnRarX.app in the finder, right-click it, and choose "Show Package Contents" from the contextual menu. From here navigate to the folder /Contents/Resources/, and copy your new version of unrar here, thereby replacing the old one.

Par2
To get a more recent version of par2 you may need to download an application which already contains a compiled binary. I recommend going with MacPAR deLuxe (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11858/macpar-deluxe). Download it, mount the DMG, and open the package contents as described above. Again, navigate to /Contents/Resources/ where you will find a binary file called par2SL. Copy it to the same directory in your UnRarX bundle, delete the old par2 binary and rename the new one to par2

If necessary, relaunch UnRarX. That it, you're set.

Works like a charm! Thanks for making the otherwise impossible, possible AND for the simply, easy-to-follow instructions. I had downloaded files using Vuze and found the previously dreaded RAR, with which I had previously been unsuccessful. Not being very smart, after installing as per your instructions, I also figured out that there was only one obvious .rar file, but I also needed to grab and drag & drop on the UnRarX window the other files that were listed as .rXX, such as .r00, .r01, etc. This is now FUN as well as easy! Again, THANK YOU!

Awesome tips! Here's one other I'll throw out. The icon is rather… bland. Here's a much nicer one someone made that looks a lot nicer:

I kept this program around for years, for extracting rar's. But I just found a very annoying bug. It doesn't handle password-protected rar's. In fact, it deletes them. If you try to open a password-protected rar, it tries to expand it. Then it gives you and error. And that's it, theres no trace of the file after that. So if you spend 2 hours downloading the rar, well now you have to go spend another two hours. This program is now officially on my shiit list.

Before extraction, you just hit the Password icon in the window bar (looks like a set of keys) and fill in the password there. Then extract.

unRarX is a great program! I use it everyday, and it hasn't failed me yet. There's no need to dis a program that you don't even know how to use LOL!

There are better tools than this (MacParDeluxe, for instance, which is also free and coded to take advantage of 64-bit and multiple cores), but I still keep UnRarX around since its console-y implementation gives me immediate feedback on which .rar piece is problematic. Other tools simply report an error (or require digging through logs to identify the bad bit).

Formica had trouble on 05 Sep 2009
I love this old app, but it has a major problem, and I don't know if it's just because I'm running it on a modern Intel system using OS 10.5.8 when it was probably designed on a Lisa-II (it's nearly that old).

The problem is that unchecking the preference to "Overwrite existing files" does not stick (meaning it's not persistent after the app has been shut down), so it always starts up with that pref checked, and that means that I can't just double-click on a .rar file to start the extraction if I don't want to overwrite the original archives (which I never do). So, I always have to open up unRarX 2.2 first and uncheck that pref before selecting the file(s) to extract, adding a step that most such apps long ago made erroneous when they added double-click-the-archive-to-start functionality.

It's not that big a deal, but it is just the kind of annoyance that will make me turn my head when some other cheap, nubile young unarchiver comes on the market.

sry but I find this app often unreliable at times with large rar/split archives. It reports CRC errors, but I use the freeware tool Stuffit Expander and this works perfectly. Then again, UnRARx hasn't been updated in a long while... ?

After selecting your destination folder, click Extract instead of double-clicking the archive. But yeah, I agree, it shouldn't have to be that way.
