I am also having huge problems conecting to freeserve broadband in Mac OS X. I have been onto freeeserve tech support which is a complete waste of time and one of their reps actually admitted they are crap! I have downloaded the latest driver and am getting error message that pop.freeserve.com cannot be contacted on port 110....does anyone know what port it does need??
Can you please let me know how you over came the Freeserve issue. I can't get it working despite using another upgrade directly from the speed touch website. Any help would be appreciated. firstname.lastname@example.org
I wish it was that easy. Based on Alcatel's answer we have already contacted my ISP and while being PC geniuses they have not been able to help me with my Mac.
I am posting a copy of one correspondence :

Thank you for posting your request for assistance to the SpeedTouch helpdesk.
I'm trying to help Mr. .... with this installation and I find your answer not very helpful. What Mr. .... received from his ISP was the standard Alcatel CD-ROM for installation under OS 9.2. What SpeedTouch software is required to install the modem under OS 10.2? How does Mr. .... get the required software?
We have been testing the 2.0 upgrader under MAC OS 10.2.
We actually succesfully tested the following 2 installation ways, and both scenarios worked:
a) Under MAC OS 10.1.5 install the R1.4.3 or the R1.6 (from original CD-ROM of the provider both full releases), then install the 2.0 upgrader on top of it. Test Internet Connect.
Then upgrade to MAC OS 10.2, leaving the 2.0 driver installed. Test Internet Connect.
b) In MAC OS 10.2 install the R1.4.3 or the R1.6 (from original CD-ROM of the provider both full releases). The driver installs but does not work. Install the 2.0 upgrader. Cold boot the computer. Test Internet Connect.
a) In the SpeedTouch diagnostics you can verify if the driver is installed with the correct VPI/VCI values, e.g. for the UK 0/38
b) Also check the LEDs on the modem! They need to be both solid green.
c) It looks like in some cases the connection is only established succesfully when coldbooting the computer, in other words the MAC has to be really powered down and powered up again with the modem *always* attached.

I suppose it never occurred to you to contact Alcatel regarding your issue?
They would know how to get the CD, or perhaps email you the driver software.
Is there anyone who can email me the driver for this upgrade?
I have been trying to download it but I keep getting a sign which say this page does not allow browsing.
My email address is
if this is not possible can you tell me how to get the SpeedTouch USB install CD Rom for Mac OSX
Thank you King Williams
I was tearing my hair out. Repeated kernel crashes, failure to connect etc. But after following the Kings advice problems solved.
This driver is the most stable yet if you follow Mr Williams advice.
Alopecia stressitus cured.
Thank you Dr CT
Listen to Bamstel, who is very wise and talks a lot of sense. I threw away all diagnostics stuff and now the modem works first time, every time, with 10.2.3 without having to restart etc. Thank you Bamstel.
Shoddy and unstable drivers ruin the whole OSX experience. When I mentioned kernel panic issues to Apple staff at the BETT show they knew what the problem was immediately.
