note that your $50 does *not* purchase a license for the app--it rents it for one year. older versions of virusbarrier continued to run (albeit with expired virus definitions). X6 runs for 365 days, and expires. after which, the app must be purchased again *at full price*.

I took this for a test drive for a few days and I was generally impressed with it. I didn't have any slow downs or stability problems on a Mini 2.53 C2D/4GB, 10.6.8 machine.

My only complaint is that I wish that the outgoing connection alerts of the Anti-Spyware feature were more like those of LittleSnitch or HandsOff. VB only gives a simple Allow/Deny option, while LS/HO give many more options such as allowing a connection on temporary basis, or allowing only the connection to a certain address.
If they improve that feature then I would consider this a great app.

The version number is a bit confusingX6 10.6.15 could interpreted as it is for OS X 10.6

Anyway, the biggest question is: do we need a anti-virus app for OS X? No we do not.
Is it also too expensive.

I decided to go with VirusBarrier X6 after trying other free anti-virus software from another vendor, only to realize that "free" doesn't come free of problems. VirusBarrier runs on my Mac like I expect it should.

VirusBarrier X6 is robust yet has a very light footprint on my computer. The best part is that I can still use my MacBook Pro (w/ OS X Lion) when running scans! No lag or slowness occurred, even while running scans and listening to music at the same time I'm writing reports using MS Word. It's fully loaded with anti-malware features, two-way firewall, anti-spyware and proactive Internet security. The list goes on.

I also found out that Intego is typically the first to update their virus definitions when new malware is found. Moreover, the Mac experts at Intego are normally the first to discover any new malware or Internet threats that affect Apple computers.

Intego, as the only Mac security company focusing solely on protecting Apple products for over a decade, is the best choice for protection from malware.

This is a blatant break of MacUpdate rules by the developer, posing as satisfied customer.

"Intego.... .is the best choice for protection from malware."

Obviously, it isn't. See below.

VirusBarrier does not detect the virus Mal/Generic-L.

SOPHOS (free of charge) offers protection against this virus since August 26, 2011. Details here:

http://www.sophos.com/en-us//threat-center/threat-analyses/viruses-and-spyware/Mal~Generic-L.aspx

Today is December 30, 2011, and Intego VirusBarrier including latest update does not detect it, even not when doing a direct scan of the infected file.

The one time VirusBarrier needed to perform it failed miserably, mulitple times.

Intego charge a lot of money for VirusBarrier, and as a customer for many years I expect nothing short of perfection from Intego.

It seems, however, Intego find themselves so superb and perfect, that they do not even seem bother to benchmark their virus database against those of their competitors. IMHO, a very simple and easy, basic, standard procedure.

At face value it now seems to me that Intego in their utter perfection and glory do a sloppy job, leaving me deeply disenchanted.

In spite of 269 days of virus updates left, I de-install VirusBarrier as of this writing, because it quite apparently it is useless, when it is really needed.

Before purchasing my MacBook Pro, I owned a Dell computer, which of course runs the Windows operating system. While I have never used Sophos, on my Windows computer I would run Spyware Doctor and/or Norton antivirus. But then I got a Mac.

I purchased an Apple computer for a reason. So why would I go back to using software on my Mac that's designed by a Windows-specific antivirus vendor? I decided to go with the Mac experts at Intego.

Besides, I've read stories about Sophos embellishing the affects Mac malware. In fact, Intego has had to correct Sophos a number of times in the past. Here's one such example:

@FeelaWAY: As long as the virus is detected, it matters not one wit under what name. So, if SOPHOS gives the virus a different name and still detects it, what exactly is your point?

I first used SOPHOS 10 years ago in a small company environment. They do a lousy sales job, but in virus detection SOPHOS is unbeaten, no matter if Windows, Linux or OS X.

I'm not sure why, but yesterday I posted a comment and it was removed... while I have seen it online yesterday.
I've no idea what I have done wrong, I only copied some text out of the Knowledge-base of Intego.

Too bad I haven't saved my comment...

In short:
VirusBarrier X6 does not detect ALL Windows-viruses. While they might be clearer about that, they just don't and explain that here: http://support.intego.com/kb/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&id=43

And while the mentioned malware: Mal/Generic-L is for Windows and not for Mac OS X, Intego has decided to exclude it.

VirusBarrier X6 works fine and has a great firewall built in, which I have been using as NetBarrier X for many years now. But it lacks detection for all Windows-viruses/malware, that's a decision Intego made. While I think they should mention that clearer, to avoid misunderstanding, I also think that they make a point by focusing on the Mac. If you want to protect Windows, you should install an antivirus on your Windows and maybe two, because tests I've done show that also Avast, Sophos and ClamXav find other malware for Windows of which not only names differs...

So, I guess it would be good if Intego would be a little clearer about what Windows-viruses/malware they detect. Maybe just choose to do them all or do nothing (only Macro-viruses).

@Jeepee: The whole point of having anti-virus software on a Mac are Windows virii, so that Mac users do not unknowingly pass around virii to Windows users.

While protection against Windows 95/98 virii is of course nonsene, Intego deciding to exclude any *new virus* like this one from their service would be like shooting themselves in both feet - but with an elephant rifle!

For defending against a Mac-only virus you can probably also use Spotlight to find....

I too am a long-time Mac user (I was using an Apple II in 1885) and have used VirusBarrier for many years. I have not had problems until the last few months, when downloads became impossibly slow, so slow that I am unable to get threat filters. Before writing a terrible review, I would like to have some feedback as to whether this problem is a common one or in some way particular to me. In September, I had the same problem but after a week or so, the download speeded up somewhat so that it became possible to get the new threat filters; but this time it is even worse. It is literally impossible for me to get the new filters or even the new 'Intego Common Components" that are only 573 Kb!!!

Same here (I already uninstalled VirusBarrier - see above), threat filter downloads were painfully slow. The only was to speed up was to connect through a VPN to USA, that sped up the download considerably.

6.1.14 has reduced 3 macs to a crawl, making the utterly unusable, I've had to literally turn them off.

Uninstalling now - sick to friggin' death of big developers flaky software.

Now I know that the developer is going to say it's not us, but explain why 3 macs that ran fine the day before all have fallen over since the 6.1.14 update!

No response from the bug report either - big surprise there!

I've used it for 1 year and a half and over the time it has improved.

But the other after getting yet another inexplicable slowdown followed by a freeze I've removed it.

And I've rediscovered my Mac, no more slowdown, fast network connections again, no freezes ...

DO NOT install this piece of crap on your computer if you look for stability !
Just be carefull and install Little Snitch to monitor your outbound connections

Are you using 0S10.7.1? I am concerned since I have been using VirusBarrier for some time and paid whatever they asked. But I am worried about 1° the possibility that it is a bad drain on memory and slows down my Mac 2° if it is not efficient in eliminating viruses, then what is the point???

Incidentally, I found Little Snitch to be just about the most obnoxious app I have ever seen in my life (and I have see many). It drove me crazy with its incessant interferences and interpellations. I had to de-install it just to keep my sanity, but de-installing turned out to be a nightmare in itself. So be careful in following Zfil's last piece of advice. I'm not saying the app is bad (maybe I just don't know how to use it), only that it drove me mad.

I don't really want to write my own review just yet, but I do wish to express my annoyance at the extreme slowness of the downloads. It took practically the entire day to download the latest virus definitions, but I have been trying to download the update to 10.6.14 for the last two hours (it still indicates about 1/9th done! so I think it is hopeless).

I got Virus Barrier X6 in a MacUpdate Promo and after reading about what it does to your computer and their business practices I did not install it. These reviews are helpful to potential users. The best way to stop developers from doing business this way is to vote with your feet. Run to some one else. There are enough ethical developers out there that we should be able to find good software without all the crap.

Good evening, im wondering if anyone can help me here. fairly new to mac.

I installed virusbarrier and decided to delete it right afterwards, because it created a kernel panic and everything froze. I need my computer to stay on and active.

Deleted virusbarrier and the traffic monitor but the shortcut on the upper menu remains (right next to the volume and the wi-fi.) Any idea on how to remove this?

For the last week so my computer reports kernel panics due to Virus barrier 6. After I have now removed the software completely and the system is stable again. Intego please fix it asap.

There's a behavioral analysis tool that VirusBarrier X6 has that can cause kernel panics. It's a check box under, the email tab (I think).

Ok, so since i installed virus barrier, the program has been a resource hog. I mean at times it is taking up to 600 MB, but typically when i'm having issues it's around 370MB. That is a crazy amount of memory!

So that is not the issue. When i'm working in pretty much all the applications i use daily. (word, excel, powerpoint, photoshop, inDesign etc) All of a sudden i'll get the spinning beach ball and program become non responsive.

I force quit virusbarrier and problem solved. (at least for 5-10 minutes, then it does exactly the same thing.

I've added indesign, photoshop etc to the trusted list not to scan, but it doesnt help. (I will not add microsoft crap because that's the reason i have the antivirus software. Adding it to the trusted list defeats the purpose)

So I contact intego several times. The send new update, doesn't work. Send a program to run a report when it happens and I've sent them like 6 reports and have not heard back from them... I'm pisssed with this software.

It is just so buggy, that I don't know how they can let it out of their testing?

So since i have to have something that is always running to stop things, this seems to do the job, just acts like malware constantly freezing programs and buggy.
