Just remove the Extended Download service from the cart. No credit card required, but you do have to create an account.

So, is this a paid upgrade for someone who already owns an earlier copy of StuffIt 2011?

This version is not showing on the updates page.

Right -- got the same thing. The software's internal update function (both Expander and Deluxe) says "You've got the latest version" at 15.0.2 And on the Smith Micro updates page, 15.0.2 is also shown as the most recent version. (Updates are free btw, to all those goofballs posting here about needing credit cards.) So I am not sure where MacUpdate came up with the 15.0.4 info…

Thanks for the 15.0.4 update link, Davidravenmoon. Considering how much more compressed StuffIt archives are compared to zipped archives, I continue to use this app on my 27" iMac running Lion. I don't know why Apple chose ZIP as the default compression scheme when it is such a space waster. Some people may say that space is really no longer an issue considering what huge hard drives we have these days; but still, I just like the super compression that StuffIt Deluxe achieves compared to ZIP.

The whole idea of compressing files with something like Stuffit is that is that it makes them easier to move around, copy to other drives, etc. and they manage to stay in a usable form for easy unpacking when you need them. Plus, you may gain savings on space, since the files will be compressed--maybe. Many modern files seem to be well-compressed already, and you may not get any compression out of some, like mp4's, for example. However, Stuffit will save about 10% on Mp3's and up to a third of the space for pdf's. Even more stuffing an app. So it has it's uses. Users should be aware that "stuffing" isn't the only option--the program has other compressors. Stuffing itself seems to use a lot of CPU power, and it can take a while, whereas the other compressors may be more appropriate. Read the guide and look through the preferences to learn a lot about how it works. This program may have a limited life with bigger hard drives, but it still can be very helpful in archiving.

"This update adds ability to hide the StuffIt Destinations dock.
Also includes some assorted minor bug fixes."

I've defended Stuffit in the past. I found it surprising to see negative reviews that had NOTHING to do with the software itself and/or posted misinformation. Probably worse, all the "smilies" from people agreeing with such misinformation. For example, there's SHMK's comment: "I just noticed the price 79.99???? You have got to be kidding." As I mentioned before, the FULL price is $49 and includes many extras. As mentioned before, they also offer discounts frequently. I paid around $18 for my upgrade, which also included licenses for the Windows version.

My version was 13, and version 15 has 2 problems:
1. In some cases expansion can be incredibly slow, as mentioned by MACGURUGUY. Most of the time this has NOT been an issue.
2. I upgraded -within the application- to 15.0.2 while using Stuffit Destinations. That did not upgrade Stuffit Archive Manager. To upgrade this, I had to download Stuffit Deluxe. ONlyOnly affected the upgrading procedure, but not typical software use.

Originally I was going to rate this with 3 stars, given that I could not preview compressed files via Quicklook. After using Stuffit Archive Manager once I can preview compressed files as I did with version 13 (using MacFuse).

Magic Menu crashed, so I had to enable it once again. This is found via Stuffit Archive Manager. I prefer a centralized application with preferences in one place. (I waited 20 minutes and used MagicMenu before posting the review. It had no other crashes.)

So in spite of this, I still have to give it 4 stars. With their promotions, it is certainly attractive even for new users. The software handles pretty much every format I encounter, plus it integrates with other applications such as anti-virus and email programs. In terms of compression, it offers a plethora of options.
They also offer free versions of some of their software which may be good enough for many users.

Note that unlike the 14.x/2010 series, Stuffit will not launch the Expander (or the other utilities), run a virus scanner, and then close anymore. I double-checked this with Smith Micro support and they confirmed their software now stays open until you close it and virus scanning is only performed when using the Stuffit Archive Manager.

I just tried expanding a ZIP file via Magic Menu (Command + U) and after expansion Sophos Anti-Virus was launched. I had set it up also under Magi Menu's preferences. I only had to quit Sophos manually after the scan had finished.

Veeeeeeeeeeeeeery slow. Droplets feature will not function on old G4 with 10.5.8 Leopard. Magic menu is there, but like other person commented -- you have to click it off and on (why?). And I just want to say that it's not slow because I'm using a G4. I'm using Expander 2011 at work with an imac 3.06 Intel, and it's slow going there too. Guess they thought making it look better was worth more than making it work better. Freezes up too.

Very nice improvement to the Stuffit suite. It's less clutter with everything being in the one app, and it seems much faster, even on my older G4 MDD.

At first I thought they removed the Magic Menu, but going to the preferences and toggling it off and on made it load again.

I still prefer Stuffit even though OS X has a zipping function built in.

Just adding a comment since PENGUIRL's test below resulted in a large sitx file and my experience with sitx is very different. My sitx files have always been smaller than the alternatives, and my results are different from PENGUIRL's.

NIN Free Ghost download:
Original ZIP file: 82.6 MB (Same)
Uncompressed: 87.3 MB (Same)
Sitx: 73.8 MB (instead of 82.4 MB)

Percentage of saved spaced per file ranged from 5.9% to 24.6%, excluding the .DS_Store file at 97.6%

Preferences:
Compression (Choose method by file type)
Compression level (16)
Memory usage (30)
Encryption RC4 (512-bit)
Error correction level (off)
Encoding (off)
Optimizers (off)
Blockmode (On)

I created these settings in 2009 and my version is 13. I would think that version 15 has the same or similar options.

As posted in my previous comparison, other apps at their best level of compression have resulted in files larger than my sitx files. Browsing the sitx archive via Quick Look or Stuffit Archive Manager was fast and easy.

BTW, I did not find a nice discount coupon so the upgrade is not worth it to me. Still, the software is MUCH better than some of the comments here would indicate. In summary, it has more features than the competition, handles more file types, and can yield better results.

Using the same settings as ESPIRIDION used, in both Stuffit Archive Manager and Magic Menu, compression with Stuffit Archive Manager results in 71.1 MB file while using Stuffit Deluxe's CM plugin, my original method, results in an 82.3 MB file.

Well, for the first time in my life, I'm very frustrated with a download. I tried this last night, and it stalled at SmithMicro's site halfway through the download and stopped there. I tried again this morning, made it through, and the dmg file refused to mount. I will NOT spend money on a CD for a download I deserve as a longtime customer of Stuffit and SmithMicro products. Maybe I'm just lucky this has never happened to me before, but I now understand the frustration others have felt encountering this problem with other applications.

Then drag and drop a file onto a tile and it's off. Just set it once. Destinations is the newest member of the StuffIt Family for Macintosh, which includes free StuffIt Expander 2011, StuffIt 2011 and StuffIt Deluxe 2011.

StuffIt Deluxe enables you to work with a wide variety of compressed and encoded file formats. StuffIt can expand over 30 formats including RAR, 7zip, split and segmented archives. With StuffIt Deluxe, you can also browse archives, preview images and selectively extract just the files you want. StuffIt can even browse encoded archives and compressed tar files. You can extract individual files from tarballs in one step, no need to decompress it first.

Are you getting "Operation Not Permitted" errors when you try to open a Zip archive? Use StuffIt instead. StuffIt can open those password protected Zip archives. Need to send files securely? StuffIt can create encrypted Zip archives, too.

Do you want to send a Zip archive to a Windows user? Use StuffIt to Zip archives that don't include extraneous Mac data.

With the StuffIt Quick Look plugin, you can preview the contents of an archive right in the Finder. Preview compressed attachments right in Apple Mail without saving and expanding them first. You can even preview archives backed up with TimeMachine. No need to launch anything just to see what's inside.

With the StuffIt plugins for iPhoto and Aperture, you can take advantage of StuffIt's patented JPEG compression: Archive your photos and burn them to CD/DVD or compress and upload them easily right from within iPhoto and Aperture. Compress your JPEGs up to 30% with no loss in image quality.

Upgrade from ANY previous version for $29.99!

Other features:
  • Create disk images in one step with MagicMenu or the StuffIt Contextual Menu.
  • Use Destinations to create multiple Preference settings and save them as Tiles to meet your needs: Make encrypted Zip and upload to FTP server. Make StuffIt X archive and burn to DVD. The customization possibilities are nearly endless.
  • Schedule backups with StuffIt Scheduler. Automatically backup archives to CD/DVD, or upload them to FTP, or your MobileMe iDisk
  • Automate StuffIt with Automator Actions, AppleScript, and command line tools
  • With the StuffIt Plugin for Google's MacFUSE, you can mount archives in the Finder and browse the contents as virtual disks.
  • Create Mini-Installers with SEA Maker. With the Remote Payload feature, you can create small mini-installers that download their parts from an FTP or MobileMe iDisk.
  • Innovative technologies such as our patented data recompression and duplicate detection.
  • StuffIt 2011's engine enhancements improve performance and create smaller archives. StuffIt can now recompress WAV files.
