yEnc TZ is a simple freeware program that decodes yEnc encoded files. I wrote it because I couldn't find an existing standalone yEnc decoder for Mac, and I wasn't about to pay $15 for a piece of shareware just so I could look at yEnc encoded binary files. MT-Newswatcher 3.2 for Mac OS X advertises that it can handle yEnc encoded binary files, but it wants to hand them off to another program to do the decoding. You can tell Newswatcher to use "yEnc TZ" to decode yEnc files.Older newsreaders don't know about the yEnc format. With older newsreaders you must save the articles and then, in the Finder, hand the saved articles to yEnc TZ.

What's New

Version 1.11 adds the following:
  • Improved decoding of UUEncoded files: ignores embedded header lines.

Works. Nothing else to say really. If it doesn't work for you then the problem could be at your end.

I have never got this to work, on any file, ever, despite three downloads. And the complete lack of interest or replies to other people who have the same problem make even the download a complete waste of time. Is this something the author wrote in a coffee break and thought he'd have some fun by dupiing us to download it?

Very nice - does what it's supposed to do, and the price is right. Thanks.

I've tried yEncTZ and found it somewhat helpful. For pics from newsgroups, it works very well when I'm using Outlook Express 5.0.2. However, I've had better success simply using Thoth 1.5... it automatically decodes the yEnc file. My beef with the app is this: when I download some e-books for my PalmPilot and use yEnc TZ on the .pdb file (it says clearly in the docs that it will decode these), it will do one file and then nothing following that. I don't know if my memory allocation isn't set high enough or what. But, for a free application, it's not bad!

I downloaded yEncTZ to my iMac, but I could not get yEnc files to open. When I put the yEncTZ icon on my desktop, and move news items over it, all that opened was some text info about the file, but not video clips.

And I am using NewsWatcher-MT.

What am I doing wrong?

I have never gotten it to work even once. It ALWAYS reports errors in the file - ANY file - and outputs either nothing or gibberish.
