What does Folding@Home do? Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease.

The Pande group works on theory and simulations of how proteins, RNA, and nanoscale synthetic polymers fold. We have developed the ensemble dynamics method and its application to more...

Seems very sloppily done. Says it runs as screensaver, but doesn't appear in the list in preferences, and no other window was apparent so not standalone screensaver (if screensaver, why not control from screensaver prefs instead from custom prefpane?). Console version doc seemed to say it displays a window, but not, just text in Terminal. One place on his website said "display is not ready yet"; I guess I believe that. Finally, stopping it from prefpane seemed OK but when I later ran console version, I saw error message about improper termination. Console version started at step 514 of 500000 and hung there, maybe going maybe not, but eating CPU. I stopped it, then tried the uninstall instructions, which were wrong (needs a .sh at end of command name). I gave up on it.
Not ready for prime time.

A reply to UmarOMC,
Well I know time moves by very but you must be in a different world. I agree this is not exactly a new release, but it was released this year (2003) shortly before most college and universities let out. For many people unlike yourself this may be a new release. This newer releases and its core are now able to utilize the Altivec portion of the G4 and G5 processor. Exciting Times for the Mac. In respect to viewers who are seeing this for the first time there is no need to leave negative comments. If your looking for a newer FREE upgrade, it better to bring this up with the souse, the Panda Group and not hear. Peace, TBone

Pssst... everything you say is so true, but it is my fault for not being SO specific (as I wasn't aware I was making an addendum to the bible); this version had already been reported on MacUpdate. Have a great day. Pre-emptive apologies for any errors in my tome...

What could be better than combatting the likes of Alzheimer's disease. All that is required is the free cycles of your computer. What could be easier than that?

Download either of the clients, but only operate one at a time. The graphical client (GUI) is really the simplest app and is great on single processor machines, being a GUI, Its cool to watch how the proteins fold. (grow and divide)

The console client (CLI) works in the background of your computer. The nice thing about Macs with dual processors is that you can run one client on each processor, doubling the research potential. There are third party apps that will allow the user to get a visual reference of what you are folding with the CLI version as well.

The Panda Group has great links to the projects, and papers describing the research done thus far. A distributed project, such as this has the computing power greater than any super computer.

The "folding Community" is full of helpful people. Joining a team is not necessary, although it is a great way to get started, and international relationship with fellow folders can be fun. I've been with http://www.teammacosx.org/ for nearly years now. if you have any questions, fill free to contact the group.

Great software and an excellent choice among the available Distributed Computing Projects.

The Pande Group is conducting first class and important research.

This is an opportunity for OS X users to play a part in the advancement of science which may have a very significant value during your lifetime.

Anyone who requires assistance in setting up this application, or who has questions about it can visit one of the OS X team sites such as http://teammacosx.homeunix.com/ where they will find experienced and friendly "folders" anxious to help.
