Two things worked.
(1) Un-installing ALL Real software and reinstalling.
(2) Creating a dock icon for the downloader and launching it manually. It's found in: RealPlayer.app/Contents/Resources/

Move it to the trash and restart. Then empty the trash. Then launch RealPlayer, and it will ask if you want to install the agent, so click yes.
After that it will work again. Just happened to me a few today.

"Configure your system now?
To complete configuration, RealPlayer needs to quit your open web browsers."
When I press Configure, RealPlayer quits OmniWeb. The first time I launched each build, I had to enter my system password. So something special was happening on this initial launch.
If I relaunch OmniWeb, quit RealPlayer, and relaunch RealPlayer, the configuration dialog appears again.
The one redeeming aspect of RealPlayer is that I can go months without ever needing it.

Go to your "Library/Preferences/"
And look for "com.RealNetworks.RealPlayer.plist" and "com.realnetworks.realplayerdownloader.plist".
Or anything that says "RealNetworks" in there.
Delete them and relaunch Real Player.
BTW, I'm running Leopard 10.5.8.
Not sure if this will work with Snow Leopard users.

Undoubtedly, this is a bug with RP. Hope they get it fixed soon as I love RP and use it all the time!

I guess it would be better if Macupdate pulled off this update until they come up with a point fix like 11.1.01 etc.
This is the crash below:

I think the CPU (Intel vs. PPC) could be involved too.
I did my best as reporting it to them in official bug report form, posting to their forums and I believe they must have a good developer account enough to gather thousands of crash reports. I don't know if there is anything I can do. The real amazing thing is, it isn't some "one in million" crash, it can be reproduced very easily. How could they ship this major upgrade without testing is beyond me.

I just tried it and it seems to work. We'll see if it works longer than 10 minutes later ;)

Change the RealPlayer preferences settings for "Transport":
- Activate "Use manually configured RTSP and PNA transport settings"
- Click on the "Configure..." button
- Click the "Use HTTP Only"
Hope that helps!

Why do we have to suffer socket errors all the time after this has gone past beta?

It says:
RealPlayer cannot play this media file with the installed version of QuickTime. (error -19160)
