I'm wondering why this showed up as a new update yesterday. Real made Build 1725 available in November, 2011.

With so many good movie players now available for Mac users -- such as VLC, Movist, MPlayer and QuickTime -- and other useful installations -- such as Perian and Flip4Mac -- I don't know why any Mac user would still need to download this alien software which does not even conform to Macintosh standards.

If you use it just to download videos -- such as from YouTube for example -- you can easily install a web browser add-on such as Download Helper and do the very same thing. Plus, with Download Helper, you can also select the

I was saying that with Download Helper, you can also select the quality of the video that you want to download, when different versions are available.

Where can I locate this Download Helper? I've looked on this site... That's really the only reason I use RealPlayer too, is for the Downloader aspect (and occasionally the Video Converter).

Disregard, I found it. (Sorry, I hate it when people ask without googling too.) Unfortunately I prefer Safari over Firefox, so I guess I'll just keep using the RealPlayer Downloader mini app until I find something else. It work decent though... when it works!

Springheelmac, you may possibly also want to have a look at these:

This first one is not a web browser plugin; it is a standalone app as far as I can tell. I have never used it, but it has a lot of positive comments on MacUpdate. It costs $15.00.

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/27604/itubex

This one I am not sure if it is still in development or not. The web page indicates that it will not be free once it comes out of beta, but the page also says that it was last updated in 2010, so . . .

Springheelmac, just install ClickToFlash extension. With that you will be able to use HTML5 player instead of flash. If you right click on a video, you'll see the download video menu. If you want to select the quality before downloading you can do this on the left top corner of the video.

I was using it only for Downloader, but then one day Downloader stopped working. Real has only one canned response: check to see if the browser plug-ins are installed. If they are, as in my case, then there is no solution. And this has been the case for years. Ergo, it is valueless to me.

I've had the downloader 'break' on me too.
Two things worked.
(1) Un-installing ALL Real software and reinstalling.
(2) Creating a dock icon for the downloader and launching it manually. It's found in: RealPlayer.app/Contents/Resources/

What you have to do is remove the folder called "RealNetworks" in the Application Support folder in your Library folder.

Move it to the trash and restart. Then empty the trash. Then launch RealPlayer, and it will ask if you want to install the agent, so click yes.

After that it will work again. Just happened to me a few today.

Who wants RealPlayer to open ANYTHING other than Real content? If you're on a Mac, Flash video plays great in Quicktime. Get Flip4Mac, Perian and DivX and Quicktime will play pretty much everything beautifully. As for Flash-hating... Mate, Flash works and does things no other software can do. Fun things AND useful things. So stop being a luddite and suck it up.

10 years ago Real lost its market shares because the free edition was installing a lot of 3rd party adware. Well I am glad too see that senior management at Real still hasn't learn its lessons: this software will install Silverlight, Flash and all kind of useless hijacking services on your Mac. Stay out of it !

Who uses Real anyways ? go die bad CEOs...

I've noticed I've had crashing issues while trying to use Real Player 11.1. I found a solution to the issue.

Go to your "Library/Preferences/"

And look for "com.RealNetworks.RealPlayer.plist" and "com.realnetworks.realplayerdownloader.plist".

Or anything that says "RealNetworks" in there.

Delete them and relaunch Real Player.

BTW, I'm running Leopard 10.5.8.
Not sure if this will work with Snow Leopard users.

Nope. Not working for me on Snow Leopard. Launching while Safari is open and clicking “Later” to reconfigure system works.

Undoubtedly, this is a bug with RP. Hope they get it fixed soon as I love RP and use it all the time!

The crash at launch happened on my Mac Mini G4 running current Leopard too. It is a thread 0 crash which doesn't have anything to do with prefs etc. Sorry I misunderstood the crash reported before.

I guess it would be better if Macupdate pulled off this update until they come up with a point fix like 11.1.01 etc.

This must be something to do with the "refresh internet plugin" step as if a browser is open while you run freshly installed application, it doesn't crash.

I think the CPU (Intel vs. PPC) could be involved too.

I did my best as reporting it to them in official bug report form, posting to their forums and I believe they must have a good developer account enough to gather thousands of crash reports. I don't know if there is anything I can do. The real amazing thing is, it isn't some "one in million" crash, it can be reproduced very easily. How could they ship this major upgrade without testing is beyond me.

Sadly BBC still requires this otherwise superfluous player. I don't get it, why they don't switch to flash or quicktime. Big question: Does this verion (11.1) work with the BBC Radio Widget? v11.0 used to produce audio dropouts.

I just tried it and it seems to work. We'll see if it works longer than 10 minutes later ;)

Possible solution for "Network Socket Errors"

Change the RealPlayer preferences settings for "Transport":

- Activate "Use manually configured RTSP and PNA transport settings"

- Click on the "Configure..." button

- Click the "Use HTTP Only"

Hope that helps!
