Or perhaps that POV-Ray has had more developement time to get to a place where it's reasonably mature and functional?
But the best reason to use POV-Ray over Cheetah 3D is probably that it's rude to bash someone elses software just to promote your own.
But back on topic:
POV-Ray is POV-Ray and Cheetah is Cheetah. The former has much more potential, but is also not as intuitive. One day, Cheetah might become a reason to not longer use POV-Ray, but this lies far in the future. And with all the people working on POV-Ray, I even bet this day will never come. And why should it? The more apps, the better, commercial and non-commercial.

However, first time users should be advised that is has very little GUI, being mostly being key code oriented that has to be learned, and the learning curve is quite steep. Do not expect to master the application overnight. (A year or two if you have the inclination for it, after mastering Photoshop for UV mapping of textures.) However, mastery of the language will make all other 3D applications with a GUI seem quite simple and easy to master.
While not being for the casual user, it is the very best quality rendering engine available for personal computers, even after all these years. The ray tracing is superior in every aspect, creating stunning effects unavailable elsewhere. And being freeware, the community of POV-Ray users is among the most supportive in all of computing.
I recommend freeware MacMegaPov as a shell for the application, as it offers a number of advantages over the base application. (I beta tested it.)
Amapi (commercial) is also recommended for mesh conversion from 3DS, OBJ, etc. to POV-Ray format.
