This app is awesome. Just making the most basic shapes is addicting. I haven't found a practical reason why someone would get it yet but it's fun.

Why waste your time with POV-Ray when you can use Cheetah3D and get comparible results in LESS TIME???????

Well lets see.. could it be that POV-Ray is free and Cheetah 3D is not? [it's 59.00]

Or perhaps that POV-Ray has had more developement time to get to a place where it's reasonably mature and functional?

But the best reason to use POV-Ray over Cheetah 3D is probably that it's rude to bash someone elses software just to promote your own.

I kinda know the developer of Cheetah and I am pretty sure he wouldn't post nonsense like this to promote his software.
But back on topic:
POV-Ray is POV-Ray and Cheetah is Cheetah. The former has much more potential, but is also not as intuitive. One day, Cheetah might become a reason to not longer use POV-Ray, but this lies far in the future. And with all the people working on POV-Ray, I even bet this day will never come. And why should it? The more apps, the better, commercial and non-commercial.

I've been a fan of POV-Ray Mac since the mid-90's, being the app where I cut my teeth on 3D (as freeware, it was the only 3D engine that I could afford at the time). Even with all the other 3D apps to which I have access now, I still use POV-Ray.

However, first time users should be advised that is has very little GUI, being mostly being key code oriented that has to be learned, and the learning curve is quite steep. Do not expect to master the application overnight. (A year or two if you have the inclination for it, after mastering Photoshop for UV mapping of textures.) However, mastery of the language will make all other 3D applications with a GUI seem quite simple and easy to master.

While not being for the casual user, it is the very best quality rendering engine available for personal computers, even after all these years. The ray tracing is superior in every aspect, creating stunning effects unavailable elsewhere. And being freeware, the community of POV-Ray users is among the most supportive in all of computing.

I recommend freeware MacMegaPov as a shell for the application, as it offers a number of advantages over the base application. (I beta tested it.)

Amapi (commercial) is also recommended for mesh conversion from 3DS, OBJ, etc. to POV-Ray format.
