What's New
Version 8.0.2:
Major overhaul of base test set. Stories are longer and we added more questions and choices to the tests. Levels 3 to 13 now have 8 questions per story instead of 4.
Existing 490 Drills now allow you to train with clipboard text when you access the drills from the Menu Mode. You were always able to train with your own material using the Expert Mode, but now you have easy access to train with material that you may need to read anyway with the existing drills. When you select a Drill from the Menu Mode, you will now see an option to use text from the clipboard.
Going back to the story while taking quizzes is now an option that you can turn on or off. Some people like being able to go back and forth between the story and quiz since it simulates a real world quiz. Other people like to have that option turned off which forces you to remember what you read the first time you read it. To handle both cases, we now added this as an Administration option.
We modified the formula for the "Triple Speed" courses and drills (available in Deluxe editions) so that they end by pacing you at 1.5 times your base reading speed instead of 1.2 times your base reading speed.
Many other minor enhancements have gone into this release.

PPC / Intel, Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later
I have not had a really good chance to review the new version... but I must say the customer support is excellent... I had an issue on a Saturday, emailed the developer and they actually responded that night.. within a few hours of my email. I was in disbelief... not an automated email - a genuine response on a weekend evening.. Thank-you Stepware..
i have used this software for 6 years both on the pc and the mac. i am currently a user of the pro ver.5.1.4 for mac and writing this review as i dl 5.1.5.
this software has an intelligent interface. the learning curve to understand the software is not steep. and the software does what it promises to do in terms of increasing my reading speed. i don't think i read as fast in real life as i do on the computer though because the words are pumped at me very fast in this app. it compresses time and you have to get into your zone to really appreciate what it does.
my minor beef with the software is that it is not universal-- it is powerpc software running through apple's rossetta. i have brought this up with the publisher and he assures me that an intel version will be ready when snow leopard comes out so there won't be a continuity issue.
i encourage you to test this software as trialware and decide for yourself if it can help you manage your time by reading faster.
you should disregard the review by the n00b who couldn't install the software and griped about it here because it's actually an easy install and the publisher is responsive to emails in a direct and personal way about any sort of problem i have encounter over the years, which mostly consisted of changing my license codes for newer editions.
Apart from the fact that it's ridiculous this app is still only PPC 3.5 years after the release of the first Intel based Mac, will we have to pay for this Intel version once it's released or will it be a free update/upgrade to existing users?
When I launch this program, I get a "box" with the following message (punctuation is quoted exactly):
Insufficient access privileges.
Login as the user that installed "AceReadeer Pro".
Get Info on the AceReader Pro folder.
Change the "Others:" permissions to "Read & Write".
Press "Apply to enclosed items...".[sic]
When I click on "OK" the box closes, and the program quits.
I do not understand the message, nor what to do about it.
Took MacUpdate's advice and contacted the developer for assistance. After an exchange of email, the problem was traced to a permission level in Library/Applications Support. I can now begin my 30-day trial evaluation of this software.
Here is the step-by-step solution provided by AceReader Pro's pro, Jim:
1. Double click on your harddrive icon.
2. Double click on the "Library" folder.
3. Do a "Get Info" on "Applications Support" and open the "Sharing & Permissions:" triangle.
4. You need to have "Read & Write" permissions for "admin". If not, click on the lock, enter your password and change the permissions to "Read & Write".
One has to wonder though what business an application of this sort has writing in the system wide library folder (/Library) as opposed to the user library folder (~/Library). Just a thought.

There are three ways to use the program: (1) Course Mode, (2) Menu Mode, and (3) Expert Mode. The Course Mode walks you through a self-adjusting automated course. The Menu Mode gives you more control by allowing you to pick and choose from a menu of training activities. The Expert Mode gives you full control by allowing you to load your own content (i.e. documents, Web pages ...) and letting you set the display mode and speed. The Expert Mode can be used for training purposes and/or as an Online Reader to help you read more efficiently while you are on your computer. The program uses Tachistoscope technology to pace eye movement, which can help you break bad reading habits such as sub-vocalization and regression. Training activities include: Timed Reading Comprehension Tests, Eye Pacing Drills and fun Eye Exercise Games. Includes 13 levels of reading material (grades 1-12 plus adult-level). Drills automatically adjust training speed relative to your personal reading ability. The program logs and graphs results for accountability.
The software includes extensive administration and customization options. You can set font, colors, display modes, speeds, delays, bookmarks, column width, hotkeys... Deluxe versions allow you to customize the Tests, Drills and Games.
VERSION INFORMATION: Four versions of this product are available: (1) AceReader Pro (single user home edition), (2) AceReader Pro Deluxe (multi-user/family edition), (3) AceReader Pro Deluxe Plus (single station school edition), and (4) AceReader Pro Deluxe Network (network school edition).
