Secret Folder is a Mac OS X program that provides an easy and fast way to protect personal documents and avoid them being seen, modified, or erased by other users. It allows users to hide folders and their contents. Files and folders can be added by means of a single click on a choose dialog box or via drag and drop. What's New
Version 7.0:
Adds an option to automatically clear Finder's Recent folders at quit
Various code optimizations and improvements to product stability.
This command hides a folder. chflags hidden /path/to/yourfolder/ It is completely free. For a password hidden folder, run any of the free DMG creators with a password and then use the above command to hide it.
I have actually used and liked secret folders. I think I even bought it but the price now seems way to steep.
This is ridiculous how could the developer charge money for this... all this does is simply execute a basic UNIX system function, it puts a period in front of a file so that the system treats it as a system file and so renders in invisible. But anyone with RUDIMENTARY UNIX knowledge would know how to sidestep this "Security Measure". The fact that the developer charges for this makes me angry... I bet I could write an applescript that does this exact function in less than 20 MINUTES. I pity the fool that "secures" Bank details and credit card numbers with this.. People these days.. "Sigh"
Security through stupidity - anybody who thinks that this will make their files secure, and safe from prying eyes deserves to be ripped off for the $19.95 this sorry excuse for a program costs

P. T. Barnum was right. One born every minute. (Make that second with today's birth rates.)
If you want to keep people out of your stuff without going to the trouble of creating a faux user account (who wants to log out/in just to see document files?), password encrypt the folder with DiskCopy (part of the system installation), PGP, StuffIt, et al. Tons of encryption apps for OS X out there that are very secure.
And if you really need it to be invisible, make it invisible with any number of truly useful utilities like File Buddy that do so much more.
With the Go To Folder command, nothing is invisible. Same with Sherlock, just select invisible/on and a drive and you see all invisible files and folders. Same with dev apps like Resorcerer and plenty of others. Invisible is only protection against the computer illiterate and those who just aren't looking.

That's the reason I use it. No one I know is smart enough to think you can make a file or folder invisible.( especially my anti porn chick)

Rename your folder from foldername to .foldername - that is for what you can pay 15$ or more?
The price is not fair! This price says: hey, are you a really stupid user?

I followed your advice, but now I don't know how to make it visible again. Is it lost? Help!!!

To make it visible again, hit Find or command + F, type the name of your hidden folder, select Invisible Items and launch the search. And behold! All your pr0n will pop-up.

In 10.3, just use Carracho... If you have a server running, just change the file name in carracho, and it'll change it without problems...

If you cannot make a file hidden through the finder please just use the terminal... its very easy to do and your commands will always work also to view hidden files through a terminal its very simple with the command ls -a this isn't hard.
hide a file "mv {filename} .{filename}" don;t add the squiggly lines... or the quotes

For users that need more advanced levels for protecting data, there are other ways as protecting information on removable media (as creating encrypted disk images) or using Mac OS X FileVault.
